Why are Mormons asked to donate 10% of their income to their Church?
Gordon B. Hinckley, prior President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said: “Our major source of revenue is the ancient law of the tithe. Our people are expected to pay 10 percent of their income to move forward the work of the Church. The remarkable and wonderful thing is that they do it. Tithing is not so much a matter of dollars as it is a matter of faith. It becomes a privilege and an opportunity, not a burden. Our people believe in the word of God as set forth in the book of Malachi, that the Lord will open the windows of heaven and pour down blessings that there will not be room enough to receive them (Malachi 3:8-10). Moving and touching is the testimony of Latter-day Saints throughout the world concerning this the Lord’s law for the financing of His work.”
Latter Day Saints(Mormons) donate 10% of their income to the church because the Lord has commanded us too! In Proverbs 3:9 it says, "Honour the Lord with substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase." This is talking about tithing, tithing literally means one-tenth, which is 10%. So when the Lord commands us to donate one-tenth of our increase(income) that is what we do. If you look at Malachi 3:8-10 you will see that the Lord is asking for us to give him our tithes (10%) and in return he will open the windows of Heaven and pour out blessings, so many that we won't be able to contain them. Wouldn't you want to receive innumerable blessings for just giving Him 10% of your pay check? It seems like a pretty fair trade to me.

God gave us all that we have. While we're here on earth he is in turn asking us to give 10% to further his work, and to help others in their path back to Him. I've never seen tithing as a burden, or a problem. We know that by paying our tithing we are in turn receiving blessings, and I never feel like I don't have enough when I pay my tithing.

This is nothing new, nor is it exclusive to the Judeo-Christian tradition. Many faiths practice alms or a tithe, including Islam and Sikhism.
A voluntary religious contribution of 10% is a tithe or tithing. This type of offering is mentioned many times in the both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. In the book of Genesis, chapter 28 verse 22, the ancient patriarch Jacob covenanted with the Lord, "and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee."
Everything we have, our lives, the earth and everything in it, have been given freely to us by a loving Father in Heaven. He asks only a small portion in return to help build his kingdom on the earth.
When my husband and I were first married, we decided to make paying a 10% tithe a top financial priority, and it has been a great blessing to us through the years. In Malachi, chapter 3 verse 10 it states, "Bring yea ll the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you thei windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." This has certainly been the case with us.
I realize that 10% of one's income can seem like a large sacrifice. However, when the law of the tithe is kept, it serves as a portal through which great blessings (both tangible and intangible) can flow. The Lord always finds a way to bless those who do what He asks them to do.

Tithing is a biblical principle. It is an act of faith. I have never been "asked to donate 10% of [my] income" to the church... I have only been taught that tithing is a commandment. The church doesn't ask if I pay gross or net on my income, or how I pay on my investments. No one except the bishop, his two counselors, and the financial clerk knows if I pay tithing or not. It is a very liberating feeling to be able to give the bishop my nondescript tithing envelop and not have the pressure of having all eyes on me when the collection plate comes around. Tithing is one of the principles required for admission to the temple because it is a very tangible measure of our faith. The Lord doesn't expect more of us than we are ready for. He does not want us to be responsible for covenants we are not ready to make or keep.

We are asked to donate 10% of our income to the Church. This is called Tithing, or one tenth. The tithing I give to the Church, but really to the Lord, is a blessing, rather than a sacrifice or expectation. The earth and everything in it is the Lord's. He does not need my money. But He has given me the opportunity to pay tithing so that I may recieve blessings from Him through being obedient to this commandment. Also, the money given to the Church is used to do all manner of good. I know that I recieve more blessings because the money I give is helping the poor, needy. It is also furthering the work of the Lord by helping to maintain our church buildings, temples, and all manner of things.
It is hard to pay tithing sometimes, especially in the current economic conditions. But my family and I exercise our faith in the Lord. We have never gone hungry, gone with out shelter, clothing, or really anything we needed. I know it is because we have always paid our tithing to the Lord.

The Lord has given us everything that we have in this world. All that he asks of us in return is that we have the faith to give Him ten percent back. If we follow the law of the tithe, we have been promised further blessings.
