What do Mormons believe about “eternal life?”

Heaven is the place where God lives and the future home of those who do God’s will and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. The hope of our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and the purpose of life on this earth is to teach us and prepare us that we, along with our families, might live with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ eternally.

After we are resurrected we will be judged and rewarded for the things we have done in this life (see Revelation 20:12,13).

Jesus Christ taught His Apostles that in His Father’s house are “many mansions” (John 14:2). Our loving Heavenly Father is anxious to reward all of His children according to their obedience to His commandments and their willingness to follow the Savior.

Those who do these things and are worthy to return to the presence of God and Christ become “heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:17) of all that the Father has. They will return to live with Heavenly Father and with their families in His eternal glory.

Those who choose not to follow our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ will receive a reward according to what they have done in this life, but they will not enjoy the glory of living in the presence of God.

Nate answered…

Eternal Life is the greatest of all the gifts of God. It is living eternally in the presence our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. In eternal life we also have to opportunity to live with loved ones who have passed on. Anything good, wholesome, or joyful that we have experienced here on earth is multiplied infinitely in that life to come.

Brenna answered…

We believe that we have come to this Earth as part of the Plan of Salvation! And here on Earth we were instructed to do many things, and we promised to keep them, we promised The Savior and Heavenly Father. One of the things we promised them was to repent of our sins, every sin we commit! Repentance is a word for just "Saying Sorry for Doing Wrong Things", things like, lying, stealing/cheating, or pornography. After we repent, we are forgiven of our sins, and the Lord remembers them no more. (D&C 58:42-43) Nd if we try our best and really repent of our sins, we get the extraordinary blessing of Eternal Life, in the Celestial Kingdom, with our Brother and Father. Now, Eternal Life, is exactly THAT! Life, for eternity. To live forever. See, we do physically die for this Earth, and this Earth life, but we also have a Spirit, inside of us! Inside of our bodies. Or in other words the Holy Ghost, as 'we' more commonly use. So after we die from this Earth, we go the Spirit World. Where we are taught more about the Gospel, or we can teach it to others! After the Resurrection takes place(the time of that is Unknown, to everyone. Even our Prophet.), we are judged, on EVERYTHING we ever did. Weather we acted upon it, said it, THOUGHT it, even our intents, or encouraged another to do it, we're judged on it. And we're held 100% accountable, for them, and based on how we acted is what determines which Kingdom we go to. And we go there for, Eternity!!

James Leroy answered…

Mormons' belief in "eternal life" is one of the most significant doctrinal departures from traditional Christianity, though it encompasses others' beliefs as well, which by and large are true but simply incomplete. We do believe that people are rewarded according to good deeds. We also believe in the grace of Jesus Christ, and that all who believe in Him will be saved. To be "saved" means to be saved or spared FROM the effects of death - physical and spiritual death. Physical death: separation of body and spirit. Spiritual death: separation of us from God. Here's the catch, here's the difference, here's the key: we believe that ALL men are saved physically, and will be immortal through a resurrection. But only those who truly believe in Jesus Christ and demonstrate their faith through obedience will be worthy and comfortable living eternally with God after this life, because they will continue progressing and not be content taking their free gift only. Eternal life is not for freeloaders, it is for those willing to give their all in service to God and want to be more like Him. God WANTS us to live with Him, to know Him, and to become like Him - but it takes work, all of that, work which only a few are going to be WILLING to do! But oh how worth it! Thus in summary, for those willing to obey Jesus Christ with all their hearts, "eternal life" will be their reality: living with God and their spouse/family forever and becoming like Him.

Aaron answered…

Eternal life is life with God and our families forever.

Trent answered…

We believe that we will live forever with God and Jesus Christ and with our families. That means that there is life after death! That is such a rich promise and, to me, fills life with meaning each day. Eternal life is one of the greatest blessings of the gospel. I am so excited to be with my family forever.

Linda answered…

As Mormon’s we believe that “Families Are Forever.” Eternal life means to become like our Heavenly Father and to live in families in happiness and joy forever. I have lost parents and grandparents due to old age. I have lost a sweet sister-in-law and a baby nephew due to devastating disease. I have also witnessed the passing of two of my siblings to unusual forms of cancer. I miss them all so much. But I am so grateful for the blessing of eternal life, knowing that if I live worthy, I will be able to be together with them again someday. We are an eternal family, sealed in God’s temple, for time and all eternity.

Ritchie answered…

We believe that all will be resurrected. Eternal life to Mormons means returning to live in God's presence. Those who receive eternal life have faith in Jesus Christ and live the commandments.

Debbie answered…

This is perhaps one of the most hopeful and promising aspects of our beliefs. I love knowing that through our Savior Jesus Christ and His atonement, we, all mankind will be resurrected and live forever. We believe that resurrection is a gift from Christ to all mankind, regardless of their belief in Him. " For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." ( 1Corinthians 15:22). What a relief to know that we will all live again. It takes some of the bitterness out of death.

We of course believe that our "heavenly rewards" will be based on our earthly actions. We believe that the gift of "eternal life" means that we will dwell forever in the presence of God our Father and His son Jesus Christ. This means that in addition to the gift of resurrection which we will all receive, if we are obedient to the commandments of God we will be with Him forever. The best part is that we have a loving Heavenly Father and a loving elder brother Jesus Christ who both want us to return to be with them. I am grateful for this knowledge and look forward to the day when I will return to be with them again and enjoy this blessing of "eternal life".

Audrey answered…

Eternal life is to live within God's presence. We are able to return back to Him and live with Him again. We also believe that this is God's greatest work and glory, which is "to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man." Moses 139 Also, we believe everyone can receive eternal life as long as we are obedient in keeping God's commandments.

Bevan answered…

Mormons believe that Jesus made it possible for everyone to be resurrected and live forever with a perfect body. Because of His resurrection all who are born on the earth will receive this blessing. Another meaning of eternal life is being able to return to the presence of God the Father. Jesus also made it possible for all people to return to the presence of God and live with their families in a state of perfect joy. In order to be worthy of this blessing of eternal life we must have faith in Jesus Christ, repent of our sins, be baptized by one with authority from God, and receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost. If we live our lives in harmony with the teachings of the Saviour, repenting of our sins and trying to be like Him, we will be able to return and live with our Heavenly Father and share in his joy. Romans 8:16-17 "The Spirit beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if it so be that we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified together.

Paul answered…

Eternal life is the kind of life that God lives. To the extent we act in a Godlike manner, we get closer to living that kind of life. As God's children we are expected, over this life and the next, to perfect ourselves. Some Mormons think that eternal life is a reward we get handed, like handing candy to a child who kept quiet when the neighbors came over, or like giving a gold plated mansion in the clouds to someone walking through the pearly gates. But that's probably an inaccurate view. You can't give someone a character. They have to build it themselves. And if, when we kneel before our Master, He sees His reflection in our countenances, it will be because, by relying on His atonement and striving with all the faith we can muster, we have tried to live as He would have us live. In which case we will have--or perhaps more properly we will be on the way to obtaining--eternal life, by definition. Of course, no one will perfect themselves in this life. It's a long term project.

kris answered…

Eternal Life, what joy this gives my soul. Being widowed at a young age, I am so grateful to know that I can be with my husband again, if I live up to covenants I have made with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Mary-Theresa answered…

We believe strongly that families are ordained of God and therefore, are meant to last throughout the eternities.
If we are true and faithful to all that Christ asks of us and endure through our own trials and challenges to the best of our ability - and use the Atonement of Jesus Christ to it's fullest, we can be together with our family through the highest ordinances that the Temples provide.

Jerry answered…

We believe that eternal life is the kind of life that God enjoys. It almost sounds beyond reach, but I must admit that I can catch glimpses of it from time to time...like when my family and I are all together at Disneyland, loving each others company, laughing together, and recognizing that if YOU have a FAMILY that Love you, YOU have it all!

ali. answered…

Mormons believe that families can be together forever, and that every individual has the opportunity to go to Heaven. In fact, because God is the father of our spirits, he wants us to come home to Him, and He's given us lots of instructions on how that can be done. I am so grateful to know that I can have more than one life with my husband, children, and all the members of my family--because this one lifetime isn't enough. I want to be with them always, and because of the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I know I can.

David answered…

We believe that life is eternal, and that all are children of Heavenly Father. We know that He loves us as His children and wants for our return to His presence, hence the willing sacrifice of HIs Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ - our Savior and Redeemer. By His grace we are given the ordinances of salvation, including baptism and the eternal covenant of marriage, thus binding families together forever in His presence.

Matt R. answered…

Eternal life doesn't mean just living forever, it means living forever as God's children, receiving the blessings that God enjoys. It means living together with our families forever.

John David answered…

We believe the Eternal Life is the type of life that God lives, and that it consists of family units.

Miguel answered…

We believe that we can live with God and Jesus Chrust forever in happiness and peace. If we want to. Our decisions and actions here in this life effect how we qualify to live with perfect beings. Who wants to live a perfect life with imperfect habits. I don't. Thats why we believe that today is "the time for men to prepare to meet God. Alma 34: 32

Antony answered…

We define 'eternal life' to mean God's life- the type of life that God Himself enjoys. Immortality is freely given by God to all of His creations- 1 Corinthians 15:22 is one of the many scriptures that discuss this. But eternal life must be earned. God sent His Only Begotten Son to Earth to show us what to do in order to become what He wants us to become- namely, as happy as we can be. There isn't anyone happier than God, and it is His desire that we all come back to live with Him, and experience life as He does- eternal life.

Mozart answered…

When Jesus was upon the earth He said "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." Matt 5:48. Our Father in Heaven is perfect and have eternal life. By repenting and keeping the commandments of God we can become a "perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ" Eph.4:13, just like our Father in Heaven and Christ. As members of the Mormon Church we believe that anyone can become exactly like our Father in Heaven because, through His atonement, Jesus Christ made it possible for us to progress towards that eternal goal. I have a testimony that we can become like our Father in Heaven, because Jesus said we can and because through His sacrifice, He prepared the way for us to be like God.

Justin answered…

It is real....

Max Dymock answered…

Living with God the Eternal Father, Jesus Christ, and our families forever. Simple!

Christopher answered…

Eternal life is living with God and Jesus Christ forever in heaven. It is different from immortality which is recieving our bodies back when we are resurrected and that is going to happen to everyone. Eternal life is only for those who obey Gods commandments and that includes baptism and other saving ordinances in the church.

Brent answered…

Eternal life is living in the presence of God forever after this life. Everyone has an opportunity to inherit such a gift. We do so by living Christ's Gospel, which is developing our faith in Him, repenting of our sins, following His example by being baptized by one who holds the proper authority, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost or in other words, being born of the Spirit and continuing throughout our life to keep God's commandments.

Katherine answered…

Eternal life is the life with our Heavenly Father. We can return to Him if we work hard to deserve it. We believe we can live also with our eternal families. It's part of His great plan for us.

Chris answered…

We beleive we will be resurrected and live with God and Jesus Christ forever which is the greatest gift from our father in heaven.

Heidi answered…

I have certainly given this question a lot of thought during the past months since my husband died.
I know that he lives. His body remains for now in the ground, but his spirit lives and continues to progress in knowledge and understanding. When Christ returns for the Second Coming, my husband and all others will be resurrected. My daughter and I look forward to that day with great anticipation.
I know that because Christ died and was resurrected, we all will be given that gift freely and without exception. I also know that God is merciful and that through the Atonement of Christ and our repentance, we are forgiven our sins and can be saved.
Death's sting is largely, although not completely, removed because of this knowledge. I'm so grateful for scriptures and modern revelations that help to clarify the doctrine of eternal life.

Michael answered…

We believe that we will continue to learn, grow, and progress with our families after this life.

Steven answered…

We believe that eternal life is something that is wonderful and a goal that I want to achieve. Living with Our Loving Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ and our families for eternity.
As long as we keep God's commandments, repent (acknowledge that sinned, feel sorrow for what we've done, pray, do everything we can to fix it, and make a promise with God not to do it again), be baptized and keep the promise that comes through baptism (covenant), receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and endure to the end. Endure to the End simply means to the best that we can, and continue doing those things that Heavenly Father and Jesus want us to do.
Honestly it is tough to always to try to do what's right, but Heavenly Father has helped me through struggles even though I'm nowhere near perfect. What matters is that we do the best that we can and Our Savior will make up the rest through grace, of course after all we can do.

Galen answered…

I like to study what scientists have discovered about our universe and our planet and solar system. It amazes me to see the beauty that is out there just from my mortal perspective. When I first learned about the plan of salvation and that we are not here by accident but we are born on this earth to learn to control our bodies and to live laws of God that enable us to return to him, then I realized that the emptiness of birth and death actually are just entry to and exit from this mortal existence. The trials and adversity which I experience are just tests to see how I will react and how I will deal with others as I overcome problems presented to me. Eternal life to me means that I will go on living after death and that Jesus Christ has provided me a way to be resurrected with my body once again and that I can merit living with my Father in Heaven and the Savior as well as my loved ones again by living the commandments of God.

Kyle answered…

Eternal life is, in its simplest form, to live with God and Jesus and to enjoy everything that They have. Eternal life is God's gift to all of His children who are willing to listen to His commandments and to do their very best to follow those commandments. Because we all fall short of the perfection required to enjoy eternal life, Heavenly Father allowed his Son to be sacrificed for our sakes, and that sacrifice makes the gift of eternal life possible.

Micah answered…

Eteranal life is life with God our Father, and living as he lives.

Nash answered…

Eternal Life is the greatest gift God can give to man. it is to live with Him as an enternal family unit forever in happiness. To live with our Heavenly Father is also to live like Him. Heavenly Father is eternal so eternal life is to live as He does.

Ryan answered…

We believe that this life isn't the end of existence. Our spirits are eternal and thus we can enjoy eternal life. Eternal life consists of having our spirits and our physical bodies being joined together in a perfect body. We can then live forever with our families. I can't think of anything better than living together with my wife and our child.

Eternal life is a gift from our Heavenly Father. All he asks us to do to enjoy this blessing is to keep his commandments. When we do all that he has commanded then we can live together with our families forever.

Alysen answered…

We believe that one day everyone will be resurrected, receive an immortal body, and a kingdom according to the way they lived.

Reid answered…

Mormons believe that "eternal live" is living eternally with God and with our families. We believe that in order to achieve eternal life, we must be living the way God has outlined in the scriptures and to his prophets, and that we must participate in all of the necessary ordinances (like baptism).

Cece answered…

We believe that "Eternal" is one of the names of God. So, "eternal life" means a life with God :) Is there anything more awesome??! :) Because of Jesus Christ's Atonement, not only can we live forever, but if we try our hardest and do everything He asks of us, we can have Eternal Life with our Father and with Jesus Christ! What a wonderful gift the Atonement is, to allow me this chance to live with God and to "be like him." (1 John 3:2) Awesome!! :)

Christian answered…

We believe families are meant to last forever and we live our lives this way. We cherish our wife/husband and children and respect them because we know that, if we are faithful in this life, we'll have the blesing to be with them forever.

Lee answered…

That life began before conception in the womb. See Jeremiah 1st chapter. Also that life continues after our earth existence.

Jeff answered…

I love my family. I want to spend eternity with them. Through the teachings of Jesus Christ as taught by his prophets in these days as well as in the past, I know that I can live with them after death. Death is not a scary thing for me because I know that God has a plan for me and through that plan I get to see all those I love after I die. This is what I believe about eternal life.

Carol answered…

Mormons believe that eternal life is living with families forever without end after we die.

Dan answered…

We believe that all who obey the commandments of God throughout all their life will recieve Eternal Life. This is how to understand what Eternal Life is. Imagine all who love you and all you love. Think of all those that have touched your life and have influenced it for the better. Think about all the good things that have happened in your life. Not only that, take out all of the pains that you have experienced in this life, even down to the little cuts and scrapes. Do you think this would make you happy?

Now, take away all the wars, contentions, and anger that is in the world. Take away the political leaders who decieve, then put in God, who loves us. God will "...wipe away all tears from our eyes..." Eternal life shall have "no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain." Things that give us pain will no longer be with us. If you want a world filled with peace, joy and love continually, then Eternal life is your goal. This goal seems like its impossible, but this gift is made possible through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. If we live our life according to the commandments of Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is established within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, then we will obtain this goal called Eternal life. In this life, we'll see all our loved ones. All who have passed away, and even our ancestors. Lastly, the Father who we haven't been able to physically live with in this life, which is God, our Eternal Father.

Micah Slade answered…

I believe that 'everything' God has created on this earth is 'eternal' and will last forever. God is perfect and what he creates will never be 'over'. Yes, we may live here and die one day but, this isn't the end. We will continue to live as a spirit and later reunite with our perfect body when through the power of Christ we are resurrected. I feel this goes for all of Gods creations. All things are alive in Christ and will last forever the important thing is that we do what we can to not only live forever but that we live forever with our families, with our Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ.

Josh answered…

Mormon belief about eternal life is simple. It is to live with our Heavenly Father and our family forever. Never to be seperated.

Phil answered…

Eternal life is living with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ with our families for all eternity. Eternal life is not free to anyone who simply believes that God and Jesus Christ are real. Obedience to God's commandments is required to have eternal life. That is why this time on earth is so vitally important. It is a proving ground to see if we will follow God or not. If we do, we will receive eternal life.

Cherity Simper answered…

Growing up as a mormon I love the fact that we as brothers, sisters and family, we can all be together forever. We are sealed together and even when we are sealed to our eternal compaions we know we are sealed for time and eternity. Knowing that is amazing because it means that if a loved one dies, we will see them again in heaven and know that we all love one another. I know that I am sealed to my family and will be to my future compaion. Also knowing that brings such a comfort to me and that one day I will see all my family in heaven and we all will be with our father in Heaven.

Bryon answered…

Eternal life on one hand, seems to refer to a life without end, kind of a fountain of youth thing. However, we believe there is a lot more to eternal life than that. Eternal describes the kind of life we will have after this mortal one. Eternal means, a life in the presence of our Maker. And the reason that such a life is worth striving for is because God is wonderful and His goal is for us to return unto Him so that we may progress and be happy.

Stephen answered…

We believe that eternal life is to personally know Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father and to live a type of life in eternity that with bring us the type of joy that They continually enjoy. Further, eternal life can also mean living with family and friends (if they too have embraced the Gospel) forever.

Hans answered…

Eternal life is the ultimate boon, the greatest gift that God can give to His children. It can be described in a simple couplet:
"As man is, God once was.
As God is, man may be."
Basically, God gives to his most faithful servants the same glory that He now possesses.

Eternal life is not a gift that God restricts to a set number of His elite, nor is it granted at a set level of performance. God grants eternal life to all of those that have been as righteous as they possibly can with regards to the set of circumstances that they were given in life - even if they had never heard the gospel while they were alive. Others who do not choose this path will still be granted immortality and recieve a measure of glory according to what they have done in this life, but they will not be granted this ultimate boon.

Eternal life is living in Gods presence for eternity with our families. We experience the same kind of joy that our Father in heaven does.

Jim answered…

Reusrection and life after death are a free gift as a result of the atonement of Jesus Christ. By His grace we are saved from the Fall. By demonstrating that we are willing to live according to His commandments we can gain more that just an unending post mortal existance. We and continue to learn, grow spiritually, be with our families, and that is eternal life.

Evelyn answered…

I know that we have been put on this earth to be tested and grow spiritually and as individuals. I believe that our greatest purpose is to prepare ourselves to return to our eternal home.

David answered…

We believe that all human beings were created in the image of our Heavenly Father and we lived with him before we were born into an our mortal bodies on earth. We believe that this life on earth is one small but crucial experience to our eternal life beyond. We are growing, we are learning, we are experiencing the decision making process that allows us to be more life our Father in Heaven and return to his presence one day to continue our eternal journey. We believe that this life and the death that separates us from our physical bodies is not the end but only a passing to a next life. We believe that the power of god, to seal on earth and in heaven, is needed to connect us and seal us together as family units forever. We believe that we can live with our spouse and our families forever and not just until death and I strive to live worthy of that opportunity. We believe the Jesus Christ, came to earth in the meridian of time to fulfill his call from the father to atone for those things that could separate us from our Heavenly Father and provide us the example and establish the correct principles that we can live by to succeed in our return to our Father in Heaven.

Kyler answered…

We believe that after we die, that we live in a world where we only have our spirits, without our bodies. After we have been judged by God, and if we have done good in this world, we can have "eternal life", which is the opportunity to live in the presence of God for forever.

Eric Greene answered…

Mormons, like other faiths, believe that there is a life after death. In this afterlife, Mormons believe that everyone will exist in either a state of happiness or a state or misery, depending on their choices in this life. The term "eternal life" means being able to live with God forever, which is reserved for those who have made correct choices in this life.

David answered…

We are all spirit sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father. We all lived with Him before we came to earth. As part of a plan, we were sent here to learn and to grow and through the Atonement of our Savior, Jesus Christ, our life does not end with death. We will all live after this life. If we follow the commandments and work to correct any mistakes we make along the way, we can be together forever as a family and live with our loving Heavenly Father again.

eternal life is living in immortality dwelling with our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Annabel answered…

Heaven is where God lives and where we will live when we do God's will and follow Jesus Christ teachings. Heavenly Fathers and Jesus Christ hopes that we can live faithfully and be prepare so that we might live with them for eternity. We believe that after we die, we will be judged and rewarded for the things we've done here on earth. But in order to be rewarded all the blessings Heavenly Father wants to give to us, we do things that He wants us to do; go to and understanding the Church, read and follow the teaching in the Book of Mormon, and listen and follow the teaching of our prophet. We believe that we have 3 Kingdom: Celestial, Telestial and Terestial Kingdom. The Telestial and Terestial Kingdom are good but we as the Church are trying aim at the Celestial Kingdom because that's where we can live with our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.

B. George answered…

We know that our Heavenly Father and his Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ desirest for all of of us (His Sons and Daughters ,Brothers and Sisters (of our Savior)) to return and live with them.

Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ stated, "This is my work and glory, to bring to pass the immortaity and eternal life of man". Our Savior, even Jesus Christ, under the Guidance and Direction of His Father, Our Heavenly Father, through his Resurrection, has already provided to us Immortality. Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, manifested in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, with the Grace of our Heavenly Father and through the Advocacy and Mediation of our Savior, even Jesus Christ, we have the opportunity to return and live with both of Them for eternity (thus eternal life/eternal happiness).

Steven  answered…

We believe that their most definitely is a life after death and that our actions today matter and will ultimately determine what our life will be like after death. We believe that we were with our Heavenly Father before we came and if we live according to His word, we can return and live with Him again and be there with our families as well.

Biji answered…

We believe in "life after death". I am so grateful to know that this life is not the end. I have experienced the loss of family members and close friends to death, and it is such a comfort to me to know that they are in a better place and that if I live worthily, I shall see them again when I leave this life. We believe that families are forever, and that through the sealing power of the priesthood, in a temple of God, we can be with our families throughout all eternity.

Lydia answered…

We believe that everyone will live again after death because Jesus Christ made it possible - we call this immortality. We also believe that we can live forever with God and with our families - we call this eternal life. In order to have eternal life, we must make certain promises, or covenants, with God and do our very best to keep them throughout our lives. We believe that it is through the grace of our Savior Jesus Christ that we can hope for eternal life. Thus, we cannot earn eternal life, but we can qualify to be cleansed and purified through the saving power of Jesus Christ if we do our very best to keep all of God's commandments.

Diana answered…

Eternal life is a life without beginning or end, therefore it is labeled "eternal" or forever. For me this not only means I lived before I came to this earth, but it means that I will live again after my life on this earth is over. This doctrine is one of comfort and peace to me. It allows me to work on becoming a better person each day, as my understanding of progression is one of an eternal nature. I realize that forever is a very long time, and that is how long it will take for me to reach my potential as a child of Heavenly parents.

Chaske answered…

We believe that all men have the opportunity to gain eternal life and exaltation by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and we believe that our Heavenly Father's desire is to grant eternal life unto all of His children, but to be given this gift, we must trust Him and exercise faith in His loving direction and commandments.

Heber answered…

Interestingly "eternal life" means more than to live for ever. We believe that every person has an immortal soul and will "live for ever". Eternal life is more than this. In the New Testament Jesus prayed that his followers would have eternal life. Then he added "and this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."

So to us eternal life means to live forever with God and Jesus Christ, knowing them as intimate friends. This is what we strive for: to become friends with God so that we will be prepared to spend all eternity with Him.

Ryan answered…

As mormons, we believe that all mankind can obtain eternal life by living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The savior said "Repent, all ye ends of the earth and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day."

Candee answered…

We believe one of God's names is Eternal. Eternal life means God's life or life with God. To obtain Eternal life is to live with God forever.

Jared answered…

Mormons believe that God is eternal. As His children, we are also eternal. We believe that we lived with Him before this life, as spirits, and learned all the basic lessons needed to prepare us for this life, on earth, with a physical body.

While here on earth, we need to develop certain qualities--faith, love, integrity, etc--in a situation where Heavenly Father isn't looking over our shoulder all the time. He wants us to grow up, to prove to ourselves as well as Him, that we are good, reliable, capable people, even if we're free to do anything.

For those of us who do learn to choose right and avoid evil, God has wonderful blessings for us in the afterlife. Just like the pre-earth life prepared us to come to this advanced school on Earth, our learning here is designed to prepare us for still more advanced lessons later. On the other hand, those who don't listen, don't care, or don't follow His instructions, will not be prepared for the more advanced lessons that are waiting. These people will suffer disappointment, regret, and sorrow because of their failure, and they will lose out on opportunities for further growth and development in the afterlife.

Guy answered…

That if we keep gods commandments we can live as a family in the here after life and there have children with perfect bodies.

Marci answered…

That we will be with our loved ones after we die and we will be able to be together for ever through out eternity if we live righteously.

Cameron answered…

to live with god and jesus christ forever, not alone, but with our family it wouldnt be eternal life unless we were with our families.

Karla answered…

I believe that we are each spiritual beings who lived in the presence of God the Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ before our birth. We came to earth to gain a physical body, continue to learn and grow, and develop faith. At death our spirit and body are temporarily separated. Our spirit continues to live and develop and after the resurrection our body and spirit will be eternally reunited. My faith is that I will live eternally in the presence of God and Jesus Christ along with my family. I believe that death is simply the beginning of eternal life.

Bryce Larsen answered…

Mormons believe that life isn't over after we die. We believe that this life is a test to prove our faithfulness to God. We believe that if we follow God's commandments, we can live with him for eternity. We also believe that through our faithfulness and the faithfulness of our families, we can be together forever.

Frank answered…

We believe that the family is the most important part of God's plan of happiness. We are born into families and we have the opportunity to receive the saving ordinances such as baptism by immersion for the remission of sinsthe same form of baptism Christ received, and temple ordinances such as temple marriage which seals or binds family members together forever, not just until death, if we live worthily. We lost a son shortly after his birth and it was very difficult. Knowing that we will all be together again someday because we have been sealed as a family in a holy temple by one having the priesthood authority of God is very comforting to me. The thought of being separated at death from my family would be very sad. That is why we want to share the gospel with everyone so that they too can be with their families forever. The saving ordinances are also available to those who have died that never had the chance to learn about these ordinances and this work is performed by the living for the dead in the temples.

Dottie answered…

Every person who ever lived or will live on this earth will be resurrected from the grave. That will equal a life after this earth. However, Eternal life is living in the presence of our Heavenly Father and His son, Jesus Christ. There are many degrees of heaven each with a glory equal to the sun, the moon or the stars. Each of us will go the the kingdom we deserve, based on our choices, behaviors, and the sincerity of our repentence. To learn more on this subject, please read some articles on the topic by typing eternal life in the search box on the website "LDS.org".

Robby answered…

We believe that everyone will live forever, even after death. Eternal Life is different than immortality. Immortality is simply the concept of living forever, the difference between immortality and eternal life is a question of where. Those who have eternal life will dwell with God, those who did not live in a way to receive this blessing while on the earth will have immortality.

Nathanael answered…

We believe that eternal life is a gift from God, our Heavenly Father, the he promises us if we are faithful to him, and love one another. He also promises that we will have eternal life with the ones we love, so long as they are faithful themselves as well.

Matt answered…

We believe that eternal life is living with God for all eternity. It is God's greatest gift to all mankind.

Leland Case answered…

In the Book of Mormon, the prophet Nephi explains if we have faith in Christ, Repent of our sins, are baptized, follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost, and Endure to the End we will recieve Eternal Life. We believe that recieving Eternal life is to live with God, Jesus Christ, and our families forever. Everlasting life, however, is just living forever, out of God's presence. We must follow these steps to be cleansed of our sins to recieve Eternal Life. We beleive in 3 Kingdoms of Glory as taught by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15. The Celestial is where God and Jesus Christ dwell. The Terrestial is for all those who lived honorable lives but didn't repent. The Telestial is for those who didn't accept Christ is their lives. We can be happy for Eternity, and that is made possible by doing all we can in this life to accept Christ and become like him, to live with God forever!

Tana answered…

Mormons believe that each individual existed in spirit form before he/she was born on Earth. After the body dies the spirit lives on and will eventually be reunited with a physical form, like our current bodies, except the "new" body will be perfected and not die again.

The thoughts, actions and feelings of our spirits before coming to earth has an affect on our earthly existence and responsibilities and our thoughts, actions and feelings here on earth impacts our state after this life.

Morgan answered…

We believe that eternal life is living as God does now. To be eternal is not only to live forever, but to live forever in a glorified state. We can accomplish this by living God's will and heeding the counsel found in the scriptures as well as by listening and following a living prophet.

Jacob McAbee answered…

We can live with God and our families forever if we keep God's commandments

Joseph answered…

We believe that God's greatest gift to His children is to have them return and live with Him forever. Eternal life refers to having our bodies resurrected after we die to a perfect state that will never again deteriorate the way it does during our life on earth. To make this possible, He sent Jesus. Jesus has power over death: Because he is the Son of God, he has power to be resurrected, which is to have his Spirit and body reunited again, never to be separated. His resurrection led the way for all of us to also be resurrected, and live again.

Living with God after this life is a gift granted to us if we are cleansed of sin. We are forgiven of sins as we repent and strive to live a Christ-like life.

Rebecca Mecham answered…

We believe that because of the Savior's sacrifice, we will all be resurrected and then judged according to what we have done while in this life. We believe that Heavenly Father wants all of His children to return to live with Him but rewards us according to our obedience to His commandments. Those who lived worthy of His presence will live with Him and their families while those who do not will receive a reward according to what they did in this life.

Jordan! answered…

Each and every one of us has the opportunity to live forever. We will all live forever in our resurrected and perfected bodies, no matter what we did in this life. Resurrection is a gift given to everyone, and it's only through Jesus Christ that this is possible. Christ died and on the third day, he arose again in a perfect, immortal body. He overcame death for all of us. Because of Him, we all have hope of living forever with God again.

Though resurrection is a "free" gift given to everyone, eternal life is not free. It is dependent on us and how we use our time here on earth. Eternal life means living forever in God's presence. There is a path provided to help us get there. There's a road map. We have prophets and scriptures to tell us what we need to do to stay on that path. We have to exercise faith, repent of our sins, be baptized, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and then we have to endure faithfully until we make it to that final destination. That may sound easy, but most of the time, it's not. The road is difficult! There's bumps along the way. We make mistakes and veer off that path. There's always a way back, though, and that's through Jesus Christ.

Some people believe they can take whatever path they want and still make it to the same destination. There's only one path to make it to live with God forever. Other paths may look nicer or easier. They may not look as rocky or as narrow, but those paths won't lead us where we want to go in the end.

Stephanie answered…

We believe that death is not the end for a person here on earth. We believe that after we die, we continue to live on and in heaven. Although, our physical body ends it's time here on earth, our spiritual body continues on and in to the next step of our life. Thus, being eternal life.

Karen answered…

There are 3 degrees of glory that almost everyone will end up in. Very few will end up in 'hell' forever.

Boyd answered…

We believe we a literal children of our heavenly father and that after this life we can return to his presence.

It is important to follow the Savior here on earth. His perfect life has shown us what is necessary for us to progress.

The purpose of life on earth is to teach us and prepare us that we, along with our famillies, can be eternal and together.

Rich answered…

Eternal life the great greatest gift of all. It is what I seek to obtain. I find that the journey to obtain eternal life brings lasting joy and purpose to my life.

Joalene answered…

We believe that eternal life is God's work and His Glory. He wants this for all of his children. He sent his son Jesus Christ to come to earth to teach us how what path is the way home. He also came to ressurect and atone for our sins which makes repentance and resurrection possible for all of God's children. We believe that eternal life is living in the highest degree of heaven with our families in the same relationships we enjoyed on earth, but with our Heavenly Father and our Heavenly Mother, with our ancestors and with our posterity. We believe that as we progress on this earth we will have that opportunity in the next to learn more and to become like our Heavenly Father and gain all that he hath.

Thales answered…

Ethernal life generaly could be described for people as live forever, but in the plan of salvation of God, it has anotehr meaning... that is be in God`s presence.

Jason answered…

Mormons believe that through the atonement of Jesus Christ, we can live for eternity with our families in the presence of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Through the atonement, we can become like God, as He has promised in the Bible. One can receive this gift from God by having faith in Jesus Christ our Savior, repenting of our sins, being baptized by one holding priesthood authority from God, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, following the commandments of the Lord, and enduring to the end.
