What is the Law of Chastity?

Official Answer

The power to create children is very sacred. Our Father in Heaven has commanded that the sacred power and privilege of sexual relations be exercised only between a man and woman who are legally married. This is the law of chastity. It means that we must not have sexual relations before we are married, and after we are married we should have sexual relations only with our husband or wife.

Keeping the law of chastity brings safety, happiness, peace, and self-respect. It also deepens married love and protects families. Breaking this law is serious. But those who have broken it can gain forgiveness and peace through repentance and obedience.

God wants the best for you and for all of His children. Following God’s plan of reserving intimacy for marriage will help you and your family be happy.

  • We believe that the act of sexual intimacy is a beautiful spiritual experience that is to be shared between husband and wife. Too often it is shunned as evil or over exploited thus destroying the beauty of it. There is a happy medium. That medium is within marriage. It is used to express the deepest form of connection and love. When it is treated in a way that makes it lose it's beauty or if it's treated as if its only bad, we lose a special gift from God and we lose a great spiritual binding experience that can be had when used between married couples. • The Law of Chastity is the collection of rules that the Lord has placed on the sacred relationship between man and wife. These rules were given from God since the very beginning, when God commanded Adam to "cleave unto Eve and none else." The Law of Chastity declares that no one should have any form of sexual relationship outside the bonds of marriage between a man and a woman. This is includes the avoidance of pornography, masturbation, and homosexual relationships. Be following the commandments that the Lord has give us, we have the promise of strong, eternal families. I know that keeping this commandment brings the Spirit into our lives and protects us from the evils of Satan in this world. Show more

  • The law of chastity to me has at its core the respect of both our own bodies and those of others, as well as holding in high esteem the powers for creation of life that God has placed in our bodies. This is an area where Satan tries hard to destroy us, and we need to be on guard against his temptations. Show more

  • As I mentioned before, I had struggled with an addiction to pornography. I understand that certain feelings are very powerful. However, these feelings need to be reserved until after marriage, and then should only be between husband and wife. Our Heavenly Father designed our bodies so we would have these strong feelings--however, they are meant to strengthen the bond between couples, not to give us pleasure on whim. Although repentance is possible and worth it, the road of heartache caused by committing the sin is long and painful. Please wait. Show more

  • The Law of Chastity is a commandment to keep yourself sexually clean. For those who are not married, that means to abstain completely from any sexual activity. For those who are married, sexual relations are expressed only to your spouse to whom you are legally married. Engaging in sexual activity with whomever you want, when you want, whether you are married or not, sounds like having freedom. But the consequences of exercising that "sexual freedom" outside of marriage are devastating to individuals and to families. Consider the years of heartbreak that result from teen or other unplanned pregnancy, or an extra-marital affair. These are not paths to a joyful life. And they are all easily avoidable by practicing the Law of Chastity. Show more

  • The law of chastity is something that will do nothing but good for you. The law of chastity helps ensure safety and happiness. Simple enough. I know that as i have lived the law of chastity in my own life i have experienced nothing but true happiness. Show more

  • The Law of Chastity requires that we not have any sexual relationships before marriage and that we be completely faithful in thought, word, and action to our spouse after marriage. We believe that our physical bodies are sacred gifts from God and that, within marriage between a man and a woman, sexuality is a sacred part of our Heavenly Father's plan. It allows men and women to draw closer to each other in a respectful and fulfilling way and to bring children into their home. Church leaders have stated "the means by which mortal life is created [is] divinely appointed." Because sexuality is such a sacred, personal part of our Heavenly Father's plan, we should treat the topic with respect. Church members should avoid conversations that are crude or vulgar, should dress modestly, and avoid pornography. • Keeping the Law of Chastity is to reserve intamacy only within the bonds of marriage between a man and a woman. Only in the bonds of marriage will that sacred priviledge bless us. We know blessings come from being obedient to the commandments God has given us. God tells us that our "body is the temple of the Holy Ghost" and we are "bought with a price" and that our bodies are not our own, but "are God's". (1 cor 6:18-20). God is pretty straightforward with how serious a crime it is to break this Law of Chastity. "It is better to marry than to burn." (1 cor 7:8-9). Alma tells us "these things ... are most abominable above all sin save it be the shedding of innocent blood or denying the Holy Ghost". (Alma 39: 3,5). God is very serious about these things. Thankfully all that we have done wrong can be forgiven us. Do you remember the story about the woman that was accused to be caught in the act of breaking this law and taken to Jesus? do you remember what he said? "woman, where are those thine accusers?...neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more." (John 8:1-11). If this woman committed such a crime, she was forgiven of the monsterous sin; the 3rd most terrible. He will do this for all of us, for he is "no respecter of persons." (Acts 10:34). But he forgives us on condition of repentance. Remember Jesus said, "Go, and sin no more." From forgiveness we recieve peace in this life and in the life to come. The joy in our lives magnify as a result of living this law. Show more
