What do Mormons believe about family?

In “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” many Mormon beliefs about families are outlined. One of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ core beliefs is that family relationships can last forever—not just for this life.

Just as some of life’s sweetest joys can come through family associations, the loss of a beloved family member can be a source of our deepest sorrows.

But death does not need to be the end of our relationships with cherished loved ones. The Lord revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith that the “same sociality which exists among us here will exist among us there [in eternity], only it will be coupled with eternal glory” (Doctrine and Covenants 130:2).

Family members who accept the Atonement of Jesus Christ and follow His example can be together forever through sacred ordinances performed in God’s holy temples. Jesus gave to Peter the power to have things sealed on earth and sealed in heaven (Matthew 16:19). This same sealing power was restored to Joseph Smith. Mormon’s believe that they can be “sealed” or bound together through His power enabling them to live together in eternity.

Dave answered…

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and...each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. (The Family: A Proclamation to the World.) No other success can compensate for failure in the home. Most earnestly and urgently, we call upon parents to assume their full responsibility for teaching and living the gospel in the home. (President David O. McKay.) The most important work that you will ever do will be the work you do within the walls of your own home. (President Harold B. Lee.)

When talking to people who happen not to believe as we do, don’t let belief be a conversation stopper. Independent of the thoughts and feelings of a current dialogue partner, continue to be friendly and Christ-like. In the Church of Jesus Christ, we believe that we should keep an open conversation going. On the important topics of family, marriage and sexuality, there are such diverse opinions, and our public “town square” should be open to all. These are big topics. Let’s talk… and listen… and understand.

Darron Dowda answered…

We believe that family is the foundation for happiness. The design of a family has its roots in eternity, in that we each chose to be part of a family prior to coming to this earth. While on this earth, the only true way back to our Heavenly Father is with our family.

Kord answered…

We believe that the family is "the most important social unit in time and in eternity". That means the most important, period. End of story. We are all a part of our Heavenly Father's family, and we are all part of a family as well. No one is exempt, either on earth or in heaven. Life's greatest joys and life's deepest sorrows are all experienced in the family. Family life is the center for all teaching and training of children. It is our duty to consistently build stronger family relationships by spending time with each other, by caring for one another, and by just being there for one another. Perhaps the greatest blessing of the family is the opportunity to be with your family forever. It is for this reason that Mormons don't just focus on our immediate family, but also our extended family, as far in any direction as possible. The blessing of being together is for all. Not just a select few. Our Heavenly Father wishes all of His children to be with Him forever. That includes all of us.

Braden Scothern answered…

The family is ordained of God. It is the central unit for happiness in this life and eternity. The greatest joys can only be found within a family.

As a family progresses in Jesus Christ's gospel and strive to become more like Him each day, they are blessed in amazing ways. The peace, love, happiness, and unity of the family grows continually.

We know that families can be together forever if they accept Jesus Christ and His gospel. As they exercise faith, repentance, are baptized, receive the Holy Ghost, and endure to the end, they can go to the Lords house, the temple of God. Once within its walls they can be sealed together by the same power that Christ gave Peter in Matthew 16:19. Because they will be sealed here on earth, they will be sealed in heaven. That family will receive a fullness of joy together in God's kingdom.

Alyssa answered…

Family's can be together forever through Heavenly Father's plan which is marriage in the Temple and sealed, having kids, and having your kids sealed to you. As long as you do what is right you will live with your family Forever.

A. Henrie answered…

To Mormons, families are not only important, they are essential and sacred. The family is the most fundamental unit in the Mormon church and ALL of Mormon doctrines and programs are about making people better so that they are better members of their families. Being a good father, mother, brother, sister, daughter, son, granddaughter, grandson, etc... is a major responsibility of every human that has or ever will be on this earth.

We do not have families to help us live this life; we are living this life so that we can have families...forever.

As you can tell, family is a pretty big deal for us. That's one reason I love this church - I love my family and I hope to have them forever. I can't think of Heaven being Paradise without them...or at least I can't on their good days ;).

Carina answered…

The short answer? We're for them.

The long answer? Family is the building block of our global society: it transcends class, culture, language, and geography. There is nothing as important as what happens within the walls of your home. Your family should be your first priority. Children deserve to be loved, nurtured, taught, and guided. Parents have a duty to teach their children, raise them with love, and help set a moral compass. I love that Mormons are encouraged to say "No," even to church activities, if we feel it interferes with our family life.

Kelsey Burton answered…

We believe that Heavenly Father made "the family" for a reason. That families can be together forever. That while we are here on earth, each member has a specific role that will help the family as a whole to be eternal. That through family, we can understand an eternal love.

Aaron answered…

We believe that the family is the central unit of society. We also believe that marriage between a man and woman is ordained of God. Most importantly, we believe that our families can be together forever through Jesus Christ and the full gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the most wonderful and joyful teaching I know of! I know that through the gospel of Jesus Christ I can be with my wife and children and with our extended family forever. When my wife and I were married, we were sealed in the temple. What that means is that through the power of God, called the priesthood, we were married for all eternity. Even after this life, we will be together forever. I know that this is true because I have faith in Jesus Christ and I have felt the Holy Ghost testify to me that it's true. This belief gives meaning to everything I do. It helps me to understand that my family relationships will last forever and makes me a better husband and father.

Kristin answered…

The family is the most important social unit on earth. It is also the basic and most important unit in heaven. God's purpose for the family is to provide a place where children can be raised by parents in an environment of love and acceptance, where they can be best guided to adulthood. I love this part of the The Family A Proclamation to the World. The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.”

Tyler B. answered…

The family is ordained of God and a central to His plan of happiness. He wants us to love our family and do our part to build a happy home. Families who are sealed in the temple cannot be separated by death, but have the opportunity to be together forever.

Dee answered…

The church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has shown me how to be a good mother, wife, and grandmother by teaching me forever principles. Because I know that I can be with my family members forever I treat them differently and with more respect and love. We help each other and bouy each other up in times of trials. I know we are all Heavenly Father's children and can live with him again in Heaven.

Stefanie answered…

Mormons believe that families are eternal. The family unit does not end when the your life here on earth ends. If the family has been sealed together in the next life they will still be a family. My husband and I were sealed when we were married and each of our children have been sealed to us. In the next life my boys will still be mine.

Christopher answered…

We believe that when sealed by the proper authority families can be together forever and that the family is a central point in our religious practices.

Felicia answered…

Family is absolutely essential in this life and will be there in the life to come as well. Through promises made with our Heavenly Father, we can be with our families forever. I love having this knowledge. No matter what happens, my family will be there for me. This knowledge helps me to know what I’m looking for in a potential husband—not someone who is perfect, but who loves God more than anything and loves me enough to want to work through our imperfections together and be with me for eternity. It’s like a fairy tale only better because it’s true right down to the happily ever after.

Randy answered…

The family is central to our Heavenly Father and therefore it is central to us as members. The best of what I am is in my family. I am here because my mom and dad married and had a family. They were children of their parents. I did not arrive here alone, I am the product of my family. I will not leave alone, I will be welcomed by family that has passed on before me.

JD answered…

Families can be together forever. Through living the principles and receiving the ordinances of the Gospel and enduring to the end, husbands and wives, with their children can one day return into the presence of God to go no more out, as the scriptures tell us. Our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love us without end. It is their work and their glory to help us all make it back to their presence together, as families. We are all spirit children of the same Heavenly parents, and because of that we are all brothers and sisters. We are here to help one another.

Jackie answered…

Mormons believe that families can be together forever. How sad to think that we wouldn't be with our loved ones after we die.

Zander answered…

We believe to be exalted to our highest degree of glory, we need to be part of a sealed eternal family.

Joseph Coffeen answered…

Family is very important to us. We believe that family's can be together in Heaven. We believe that once married in the temple that the couple is now sealed for eternity not death do us part. We also believe that our children are sealed to the parents as well so family's can be together in Heaven as well. It is a great thing to know that me and my wife are going to be together forever and it helps us with our relationship.

Amber answered…

Family is really right at the center of our religion. We want to build strong families and feel like there is nothing more important than that. As a mom I want to raise strong and good children who will learn to love Jesus Christ and serve him, also to serve and love others and to know for themselves that this gospel is true.

Marriage is something we take very seriously. I promised my husband and God that my husband and I would do what it takes to be together forever and while we are certainly not perfect, this means treating each other with respect and recognizing that our marriage needs to come before just about everything else in this world.

And the best part-we believe families can be together forever. And of course I want to be with my husband and kids from now till forever. That's one of the best parts of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Pam answered…

We believe family was instituted by God and is eternal.

Colbert answered…

We believe that families can be together forever.

Jeannie answered…

Erin. answered…

To us, family is EVERYTHING--both individually and as a church. Our church teaches that, "the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children." This means that as God's children we are meant to be in families, and that as families, past and present, we can return to live with God again.

Lofty claims I know are true. Family life is the BEST way to learn the most vital and important lessons. Though the challenges are real and the benefits are always realized immediately, the long run has always proven that righteous, good families can not fail.

Angela answered…

I believe that the family is central to a solid society. Many of the problems that plague the world today are due to the breakdown of the basic family unit, starting with marriage between one man and one woman and children, if it be God's will.

Brady answered…

The family is the center unit of life on earth as well as life in Heaven. The whole point of our existance is to "grow up", so to speak, so we can be like our Father in Heaven as part of a part of a great, Eternal family in Heaven.

Julie Harward answered…

Mormons believe that families are eternal, that in the next life we can be together forever. This life is not all there is for us and our families. We can go on loving and being loved, being together in strong family bonds forever. I know this is true.

Becky answered…

Travis Nuttall answered…

We believe that families can be together forever by being married in one of our holy temples. This eternal perspective gives greater meaning and importance to the family unit.

Ken answered…

The eternal natures of families is an amazing part of the Gospel. I love my family dearly and want to do everything that I can to be with them forever.

Kirsten answered…

Families are the center of our religion in this life and the here after.

Ralae answered…

We believe that the family is central to our Heavenly Father's plan of happiness. We believe that God intends for families to be together forever. Sacred ordinances performed in the temple allow our families to be bound together throughout eternity. We believe that a man and a woman joined together in the temple, will be able to be with each other and their children beyond death, if they remain true to their covenants performed in the temple.

Derek answered…

Family is the most important thing to Mormons. We believe that family consists of Marriage (between men and women only) and their children. We believe that families can be together forever, even after we depart from this life. That is one of the most beautiful aspects of our Heavenly Father's plan- that we can be together with the ones we love forever if we do our best to keep the laws which he has outlined for us.

Barbara answered…

We believe that Families can be together for Eternity. Because my family is the most important thing in the world to me I never want to loose their companionship.I know that there may be some who feel differently & I respect their choice. I want to live my life in such a way that I may have an Eternal Family. There is nothing in my life that has brought more Joy to me then my family. It is not necessary to be a Mormon to have an eternal family.I go to the Temple regularly to participate in an ordinance sealing a couple who have died together for time and eternity . On earth we take our vows "till death do we part" .In the Temple we are sealed together for All Time & Eternity. In the Temple we perform ordinances for those who have died to seal them together for time & eternity. It is not something that is binding on them, they may choose to accept it or not. We do this work to assure that every individual who lived righteously on earth will have the opportunity to choose for themselves if they want to accept this eternal ordinance & be with their family for Eternity.

Emily answered…

We believe that families can be forever...that families are eternal. If we live righteously, that we will be blessed with that promise. I can think of nothing that brings me more joy than being with my family forever.

Andrea answered…

For me my family is the most important thing to me. I love my family and i want to be with them forver and having the gospel in my life is a comfort because i know that this is possible. My main goal in life is to remain worthy to have a temple marriage and to be sealed together with my family forever

Stephen answered…

We believe that families are organized by God and that He is literally our Father in Heaven. We believe that no other success will compensate for failure in the home. We believe that Mothers and Fathers have a sacred and wonderful duty to teach their children right and wrong. This is best done by setting an example and by living the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Parenting is the most challenging, wonderful experience one earth. I have a wonderful wife, six children and 25 grandchildren. We all do our best to follow Jesus Christ.

Jeff answered…

Mormons believe that families are central to our Heavenly Father's plan for all of His children. Families are the most basic organization on the earth, and the only one I know of that has the ability to continue on after this life. Everything in the church is for the purpose of strengthening our individual belief in Jesus Christ and helping families to grow closer together in love and faith. The Savior has made it possible for familes to be together forever!

Amy answered…

We believe that families are essential in our Heavenly Father's plan. Our Father in Heaven gave us families to teach us, to comfort us, and to help provide a path for us to become the best that we can so that we can return to live with Him again as part of His eternal family. We believe that families can be sealed together in bonds that transcend this life -- not just "till death do we part", but that the relationships and love we share are eternal and Godly, extending beyond this short mortal existence. We believe that we are all children of God, that we lived with Him before we came to this earth, and that our families here on earth are part of His plan for us to have happiness now and forever.

Kathleen answered…

Family is central in our Heavenly Father's plan for us. We are blessed with a family here on earth, and I know if we live righteously we can live with them for all eternity. That is why it is so important to me and my family to build strong and happy relationships with each other. We are always striving to treat each other with more kindness and love and respect each day. It will bring us joy and peace now, and in the world to come.

Elaine. answered…

Mormons believe that families can be together forever. "The family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children" is one sentence in The Family: A Proclamation to the World. The main purpose of our mortal existence is to create families, and then learn to live in harmony with each other by building upon the teachings of Jesus Christ. Our familial relationships, which, ultimately, extend to all mankind, give us opportunities to become like our Father in Heaven. This is hard, and so we depend on our Savior, and the gift of repentance, to help us as we make changes in our lives and try to overcome our weaknesses.

Blair answered…

Families can be together forever! It's not, "till death do you part". We are in this for the long run and that is why we work so hard to be the best family we can be.

Aaron answered…

The family is the most important social unit in the Church. The family is a place where we can learn and grow from each other as long as we all do our part in helpin each other. The biggest thing that we believe about the family is that death is not the end of our time with our families. We can be together with our family forever. Just as Peter the Apostle was given the power to have things sealed in Earth and sealed in Heaven (Matthew 16:19), we can receive that same sealing with the priesthood of God in the Holy Temples. This is because that same sealing power was restored through Joseph Smith for the benifit of our families.

Carrie answered…

We believe that if we live worthily, we can be families forever. We believe that when the husband and wife are "sealed" together in sacred ordinances in the temple, that after we die we, along with our children will be together forever. We believe that family is the most important unit of society and that we need to work hard to have a successful family life.  Family life can sometimes be very difficult. Having common beliefs, goals and values and combined faith helps us face the most difficult challenges together. Family life is also very rewarding if it is made the highest priority both between the husband and wife and the parents and children. Parents need to make time to be with their children and each other. Children need to honor and respect their parents and be willing to participate in wholesome family activities.

Logan answered…

We know that families can be together forever, even after this life, if they are sealed together by the authority given by Christ which is exercised in His temples. The family is the basic social unit of society and the Church. It is where a child's life begins and it should never end. It is where a child is first taught how to live in this world and should be taught to live after Jesus Christ and His Gospel.

We love our families and anybody who loves another would never want to lose them. This is why the promise of "forever families" is so very important to us and to God - because He doesn't want to lose us either.

Walt answered…

We believe that families are eternal. The most important work that we do is within the walls of our homes.

David answered…

To me families are the most important thing in this life, because I believe I can be with my family after I die. I notice I spend most of my time with my family and I try to make sure I am trying to build up my relationship with my family. There is nothing that makes me happier than the thought that I can be with my family forever. I believe that when a family member dies I am only seperated from them for a brief time. I believe they are still alive and they will still be a part of my family after this life. That brings a sweet peace to my soul.

Matt answered…

Mormons believe that the family unit is the most basic building block of society.

Mormons believe that "the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children" (The Family: A Proclamation to the World).

Mormons believe that families come in many varieties: short, tall, big, or small. Some may be of a specific race or color; others may be as colorful as a 64 color crayon box. Some may have both a mother and a father; others may be valiantly led by a single Mr. Mom or Ms. Dad. Some may have no children; others may have children as numerous as the stars in the heaven or the grains of sand on the seashore. Whatever the circumstances may be, Mormons believe that faith, hope, charity, love, and family values are essential for the family to exist in today's world.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: MORMONS BELIEVE THAT THE FAMILY IS ETERNAL AND CAN LAST FOREVER THROUGH OUR LORD, SAVIOR, AND REDEEMER JESUS CHRIST WHEN SEALED TOGETHER FOR TIME AND ALL ETERNITY IN THE HOLY TEMPLE.

Jacob answered…

God has given us families to help us in our quest to learn and gain experience in this life, which for me first and foremost means learning how to love, and enjoying love from others. Because families are so sacred, God has provided a way for His children to maintain family relationships beyond the grave, even into eternity, or time without end. That way is the gospel of Jesus Christ, which enables families to build stronger relationships and spiritual strength.

James ^-^ answered…

The simple answer to this question is this Families can be together for ever. Our family ties are not seperated by death. this simble sums up family ∞ , never ending bonds that last for eternity.

Death has no sting,
The grave has no hold.
Jesus reserection will bring
All of us back as fortold
We will live forever
With our families together,
Death shall be as never,
we will live now ever
In the Palace of Christ
Oh! isn't that just nice!

Analynn answered…

We know that our greatest joy can be from our family. I am grateful every day for my family and what my parents have taught me by word and example. I know that the relationships I have with them now can continue into eternity through ordinances done in the temple. For me this knowledge makes my relationship with my family more meaningful here on earth.

Daniel answered…

Families can be eternal. Children have a right to born both to a father and a mother although we recognize that sometimes this ideal doesn't happen and that families need to adapt. Abuse of spouse or offspring is a very serious sin in the Church and may lead to excommunication.

Eric answered…

Families can be together forever. It is a simple phrase, but I know it is true. Getting married in the temple and having confirmed that what is sealed on earth is sealed in heaven has strengthened my testimony in eternal families. I know that whatever happens in this life, that if we live righteously, we will see and be with our loved ones forever.

Lacy answered…

We believe that the family is central to EVERYTHING! It is the most important part of life on this earth. And can help us be stronger, better people.

Lynn answered…

We believe families will exist throughout Eternity, not just here on Earth. Because of that belief we do everything we can to ensure that our families are strengthened each day. We gather together often, we pray together daily, we support one another in activities and interests and we are each others best friends. Sure we are normal, we disagree at times, but because we have developed such a strong bond of love and trust those times pass in an instant and we're back together enjoying each other, talking about our favorite things, having long discussions about cheese, our favorite dinner topic, and laughing together so hard we cry. Families Will Be Forever!

Logan answered…

We believe that the Family is the most important social unit for our eternal progression. A family is a unit where you can find peace, comfort and trust when established upon our Savior Jesus Christ. I know that a family is something that can help you in many ways to progress and succeed in life. We believe that families can live together forever through the restored Sealing power of the Priesthood conditioned upon our faith. I know that if we are willing to work together we can function as a family would function and be able to find much peace and solace in the world today.

Linda answered…

People look and stare at our big brood and probably wonder why we have so many kids. Though the number of kids in a family does not proves ones faith, for my husband and I it was an easy decision. Because we understand the Plan of Salvation and the central role that the family unit plays in God's plan, we were happy to bring six strong spirits into this world. A prophet once said, "No other sucess can compesate for failure in the home." When the family suceeds, so does the community, the nation and the world.

Quinton "Quin" Motteshard answered…

Famlies are one of the greatest blessings our Heavenly Father has given us! Our Heavenly Father does not want us to go through life alone. He gave us famlies to raise us and teach us the Gospel, and learn how we can return to live with our Father in Heaven again. He doesn't expect us to do it alone. There is no greater joy than bringing a new life into this world, rasing him/her with our love as well as the love of Heavenly Father gives us, and sharing our knowledge with our children. I am grateful for my family and the blessings I have recieved from them. I cannot wait for the day where I am married and able to have a family of my own and share my knowledge with my children.

Ben answered…

We believe that families can be together forever.

Domingo answered…

We all came from one big family prior to our existence here on earth with God the Father. The family relationship we have here can be forever not only for time but for all eternities.

Stephanie answered…

Mormons believe family to be the center of the church, with Jesus Christ leading. We believe that families can live together beyond this life and for eternity. We believe that we are put into families so that we can learn what is most important for us to learn as individuals and together. We believe that the father is the leader in the home with the mother at the father's side, equal and leading as one. We believe that families can bless lives tremendously and can bring great happiness.

Dick answered…

Mormons believe that families can be sealed together in the temple so that they can be together after this life.

Jean. 이지은 입니다. answered…

We believe family can be together forever! When I was young, I thought this meant my parents and my brothers. However, as I grew older and started my own family, I was amazed to realize that it's not just my parents and me. We can be sealed together as a big family with my grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, my husband, my children - all of my ancestors & future generations. As in Matthew 18:18 reads, "Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven," family relationship can be bound on earth and it's bound in heaven.

Matthew Lyon answered…

It's the most important unit of organization in society.

Viliami answered…

We believe that family can be together for time and eternity, which mean that life not end after we die from this life. We believe that the temple is the house of the Lord and we do a sacred ordinances over in the temple. So one of the ordinance that we do overthere that we can go overthere and seal with our family for time and eternity, which mean that family can be forever. So one things that I realised that the gospel of Jesus Christ of latter day saints help family to be united. Also as we try to learn the gospel in our family that it wil brings happiness and joy to our life and that's one of the purpose that Heavenly Father created family. So family is very important to me.

John David answered…

That family is the building block of society. We also believe that God intended His Plan of Happiness to be carried out through the family. We believe that our families will continue throughout eternity, by obedience to the Gospel and through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Mindi answered…

We believe that we are all children of God...that our Spirits are literally the offspring of God and that He is our Father in Heaven. He sent us to earth within families. Families are central to God's plan for all of His children. In families we are nurtured and taught and prepared for our divine destinies as children of God. We believe that our family roles are our most important roles and responsibilities and that the within the family can come great joy and fulfillment. God wants us to be successful in our families and will help us to be.
I think that the greatest teaching about the family within our church, is that families can be together forever. God has made it possible for us to be married not just "until death do us part," but forever. We believe that our children can be linked to us forever as well. In the Bible it talks about Jesus giving Peter the power to have things sealed on earth and sealed in heaven. We believe that this power has been restored and is available in temples to seal our families on earth AND in heaven.

Shanna answered…

Mormons believe that families are forever. This means that there is no "death till you part". My husband and I were sealed for time and all eternity. I have promised my heavenly father that I will do all I can to stay worthy of this blessing. Geneology is also an important part of the Mormon church and because of that it is important to keep the bonds of family strong. In the church we call each other "Brothers and Sisters" because we believe that together we are a family. Heavenly Father is indeed our (Heavenly) Father and we are His sons and daughters. We are asked to treat others with respect and love just like we should within our families at home.

Trevor. answered…

We believe that families are the fundamental organization of society and in the family we learn life's most valuable lessons. Loving family members can be great examples for us to follow, or they can provide us with experiences that will allow us to make our own family better. We believe that God formed the first family and intends the family to be the place for us to learn about life and his Plan for each of us.

McKenzie Bridgewater answered…

There's a fantastic reason God put us in a family structure. They can be a support system when everything else fails. Even though they can often be imperfect at times your family can be a place of belonging and strength.
We also believe that families can be together forever. Meaning, that we can be with our loved ones in the life to come. Your mom will still be your mom and your dad is your dad. You can be with your sisters and brothers forever. You can reunite with lost family members and always have the joy of their company! What a wonderful blessing! I can't imagine heaven being heaven without my family there with me.

Mormons believe that family is essential to Heavenly Fathers plan. I absolutely believe this to be true. I have seen the difference a strong family makes in a persons life. I know that being a valued member in my family has made a difference in my life. When I lived at home I remember friends coming over to my house and actually commenting on how cool it was to see how close of a family we were. They saw that we loved one another and that my parents actually loved each other. I hope to someday have a loving family of my own and hopefully if my husband and I work together our children will feel the same love that I have felt.

Mormons also believe that families can be together forever. That is one thing I love about the Mormon church, that fact that I know I will be with my husband (and eventually children) forever. This is an especially important principle to believe when death takes its toll on families. When someone you love dies knowing that you will get to see that person again can bring so much comfort in a time of so much darkness and sadness.

Mara answered…

We know that by accepting the Atonement of Jesus Christ and following His example, we can, through sacred ordinances performed in The Temple of God, be together forever, even after we die.

Jeannette. answered…

As a single woman, I'm occasionally asked by people how I can belong to a church that puts so much emphasis on the family. My first response to that is that the church teaches me I am a child of God and helps me to have a strong and loving relationship with Him. Loving God with all our heart, might, mind and strength is the first great commandment, according to the Bible, and loving our neighor is the second. My second response is that the church teaches family relationships are eternal. I am connected to my parents, and grandparents, and beyond, and to my siblings, and my cousins, and outward. I'm not married, and I don't have children, but I have a large and loving family. My third response is that the members of the church are like family. I have lived in several countries and many states. In each place, I have found deep friendships with members of my church family. And finally, the church exemplifies, through its missionary work, its perpetual education fund, and its humanitarian service program, that we are all family, all children of the same God. I admire the church's teachings on the importance of having strong families. I do what I can to strengthen the family as an institution, as well as to help the members of my extended family and my broader community. And I put my primary emphasis on loving and serving my Heavenly Father.

Dylan answered…

Mormons believe that family is the most central social unit. Families can be together forever through the atonement of Jesus Christ. Because families are so important, the church stresses family home evenings and vital family time.

Kyle answered…

We belive that the family is central to God's plan for His children - both in this life and in the next. In this life, the family is where God wants us to learn about Him and His Son. It is also where He wants us to put into practice the teachings of Jesus - we do that by treating our family members with love and respect. The family is where, in this life, we can experience true happiness. Since the family is where our most happy moments come, God has a plan for our families to continue into the next life. If a husband and wife are married in a temple of God, there they make promises that they will honor God and each other. If they do this in this life, one of the promised blessings is that their marriage will continue into the next life. Since families have the possibility of being eternal in duration, Mormons believe everything should be done to foster loving and healthy family relationships.

Nate answered…

The family is central to our Heavenly Father’s plan. Because of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for each and every one of us, the family does not need to be parted at the end of this life, but can remain together forever.

C.J. answered…

My family means everything to me! They raised me to be the person I am today. We believe that family is just as important to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ as it is to us. Since God is our Father in Heaven, we are all his children. Meaning we are one big family! And like any loving parent, He desires eternal happiness for all of us. Because of that, the teachings of Jesus Christ are designed to help earthly families become eternal.

Emily answered…

We believe that families are ordained of God. Every single person who has ever lived on the earth is a member of a family. Through sacred ordinances available in temples we can be sealed together forever. I want to be with my family much longer than just until death. By being sealed together in the temple, I know that my family is an eternal unit. We can be with each other in this life and into the eternities. Heaven would not be heaven for me without my family.

We believe that God wants us to be married and have children, forming families of our own. Within the family, we have sacred responsibilities. The father is mainly responsible to provide for and preside over the family. The mother is primarily responsible for the nuture of her children.

We also believe that everyone on earth is a member of God's family. We are spirit sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father. Knowing that I have a Father in Heaven and a father on earth gives me such comfort and joy.

Andrew answered…

The family is the most important social unit in time and eternity. Our families are a place for us to grow in the Gospel and to learn what our Heavenly Father would have us learn. Families are the whole reason the church exists, as the church helps support the family and helps them to be together forever.

Ryan Hasara answered…

Families are a gift from god to bring us more joy and happiness in our lives. We believe that we can live with our families after death for eternity.

Tarin answered…

In my life my family brings me some of the greatest joys. I absolutely love my family and and I am so glad to know that i can be with them forever. Families are ordained of God and is the source of some of the sweetest joys in this life. Successful families happen when they are founded on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When they accept the Atonement of Jesus Christ and follow His commandments and His example. To be able to know that the power and authority to be able to seal families together for eternity is an amazing feeling. We want this happiness to be experienced by everyone. Mormon's believe that they can be sealed or bound together forever through His power enabling them to live together in eternity. I know this to be true!!

Gantsolmon answered…

We believe that families ordained of God. Families can be togather forever. Restored gospel blesses families.

Kathryn I answered…

I believe that families can be together forever. I also believe that because Heavenly Father knows all things, he knows what's best for us even if we don't, and he will make sure that everything works out with our families for the best. The family and the home can be great places of strength within the church. You can learn and grow while feeling comfortable with the people you love, you can teach each other, share with each other, and grow closer together. For this reason we try to have Family Home Evening once a week, to set aside a time where we promise to set aside what we're doing to take the time to strengthen our family relationships, and to let each other know that we know that God loves us, and wants us to love each other. God put us in the families we're in, and even though sometimes we might wonder about that, God knows what he's doing and things will turn out for our good.

Jen answered…

We believe that families can be forever families and not just until death. I am so grateful for the knowledge of this principle. My husband and I lost our second daughter shortly after her birth. We didn't have much time with her here in this life but do know, because of the promises we made to each other in the temple when we were married, that she is our daughter now and forever. Knowing this, gives us immeasurable hope and strength to carry on in faith. We look forward to the day when we will be reunited with her.

Jennifer Scott answered…

We believe families are forever. For me this is important because I have lost my mother. Knowing I can see her again and that we'll be together forever is a big help for me.

Joshua answered…

We believe that the family is the most important unit in time and eternity. We believe that the family is central to God's purposes for the eternal happiness of His children.

The family is the ideal place for teaching children to love God and their fellowmen. It is the source of life's greatest joys as well as some of the greatest sorrows.

Everything we do in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints ultimately is directed towards establishing happiness in the home and to enabling families to come unto Christ.

Karen. answered…

We believe that the family is the most sacred and important unit in society. It is literally the building block of society. We believe that fathers and mothers have a sacred obligation to rear their children in righteousness. We believe that our families can be united eternally in holy temples, extending our relationships beyond the grave.

Kerry answered…

Mormons believe families will live together forever after this earth life if we learn and obey the teachings of Jesus Christ while we are on this earth.

Spencer answered…

Mormons believe that the family is the fundamental building block of society - that family relations are eternal and can and should continue after death. Marriage is not only a social contract, but is a covenant between men, women, and Heavenly Father. Children are a blessing and it is our opportunity to learn lessons of love, sacrifice, and responsibility. Family is at the center of our religion and our lives.

Harold answered…

Through the Gospel of JesusChrist I have learned that families can be together forever and that our Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to have joy. That families are essential in His plan of happiness and only with them through the atonement of Christ can we return to His presence. I am greatful to have been baptized in this church, to have learned this great doctrine and understand that by following the commandments and being faithful I can be with my family and my Heavenlly Father for Eternity.

Nate answered…

Mormons believe that the family should be the fundamental unit of society. We also believe that family is where ultimate happiness and joy is obtained. Part of the reason for this is that we believe families can be united for eternity through sacred ordinances performed our temples.

Gini answered…

Families are forever. The relationships and bonds we create on this earth were not meant to be for time only. The family unit is eternal in nature.
When a loved one passes on from this life, he/she does not cease to exist. His/her spirit moves on and has the ability to grow and develop upon what was begun here on earth. All is not lost. We WILL see our loved ones again!

Mark answered…

The family is not just simply the basic unit of the church, or even the basic unit of society. The family is central to our Heavenly Father's plan for His children here on this earth, so supporting and strengthening the family is one of the main focuses of our church. As we come to earth, He places us in families so that we can strengthen and encourage each other, and ultimately help each other be able to return to Him. His goal is not only for our family to be together here on this earth, but to be joined together as a family eternally. While all families are not the same, each is important in Heavenly Father's plan. In his efforts to disrupt Heavenly Father's plan, Satan is doing all he can in the world today to destroy families. Satan knows that the most effective way to disrupt the Lord's work is to diminish the effectiveness of the family and the sanctity of the home.

Because of our beliefs in the eternal nature of families, that true happiness in this life will come through our families, and that the family is central to our Heavenly Father's plan for us here on this earth, a primary focus of our church is strengthening and supporting the family.

Audrey answered…

We believe that families are eternal, meaning that we will be together forever in this life and afterwards as well. Families are extremely important to us as members of the church. We strive to be good mothers, fathers, grandparents, sisters, brother, etc.

Taylor answered…

Families are the most important unit that God has blessed us with. All the programs of the church are aimed to strengthen the family and help them draw closer to our savior

Bev answered…

We believe that the family is ordained of God and that parents have a very sacred and solemn responsibility to care for their children. We also believe that happiness within the family is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of Jesus Christ. We believe that fathers are to provide, preside, and protect the family while mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children, but in these responsibilities we believe that fathers and mothers are to help one another as equal partners.

We believe that families can be together forever through sacred ordinances performed in the temple.

Knowing that I can be with my family forever and not just for this life is such a blessing and gives me great comfort, joy, and peace.

Mike answered…

Through God's authority, family relationships will last through eternity. Marrying my wife is the greatest decision I have ever made. Because we were married in the temple, if we live faithfully, we will always be together.

Kristie answered…

I believe that the family is the most sacred and precious unit that ever was, and ever will be. Family is the whole purpose of this life, and the life of which is to come. Knowing we have family is knowing that we belong somewhere, to something, and THAT some-thing is so much bigger than we ever could have imagined. Honestly, I look back on my life at all of the friendships that I have made, and all of the people I have met and come in contact with. But throughout thick and thin, my family has always been there for me. They are there when I am wearing my ugliest pair of sweat pants and haven't showered in a day, as well as hold my hand when I'm going through a difficult time in my life. Family is the one thing that doesn't care how trendy, smart, pretty, significant, or important you are to the world; to them, you are always important because family is a team. The cutest family moved into our ward recently, and I remember their oldest son talking about how their famly had a team name, as well as a team captain! "Together, we make Team ---, and we can do anything together!" (this little boy announced one Sunday). I feel so incredibly blessed to know that I am sealed for all eternity to my family, and that we can be together even after this life has come to an end. I love my family more than anything money could buy, more than anything in the universe, and can't wait to spend forever with them!
