What do Mormons believe about the Bible? Do they regard it as Holy Scripture and the word of God?
Most of our scriptural writings have come through apostles and prophets. Through apostles and prophets, God has given His children sacred writings called scriptures. The scriptures can help you know God, His love for you, and His teachings. To the Christian world the most well-known collection of scriptures is the Holy Bible. In addition to the Bible, Latter-day Saints accept the following books as scripture:
- The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, a record of God’s dealings with the inhabitants of ancient America (2000 BC – 400 AD).
- The Doctrine and Covenants, a collection of revelations and inspired declarations given for the establishment and regulation of the Church of Jesus Christ in the last days (1830 AD – 1978 AD).
- The Pearl of Great Price, a selection of revelations, translations, and writings of Joseph Smith.

Jonathan Richardson answered…
We believe that the Bible is the word of God, given through his Apostles and Prophets in the days of old. Through generations the bible has been translated time and time again, and now it stands with some of the simple truths of Christs teachings being either removed or complicated. That is why there are so many different views on what the scriptures teach, and so many churchs created for those views. We believe that God has restored those simple truths and clarified the complicated view through the Book of Mormon which is a record of the ancient inhabitants of the Americas.

Richard Gaffney answered…
As a convert I was concerned that the bible was replaced by the Book of Mormon. How far from the truth that concern was, as the Bible is the LDS primary teaching tool and the Book of Mormon is simply another testament of Jesus Christ and serves to verify the truths found in the Bible. Cerrtainly the Bible is Holy Scripture and the Word of God, as is the Book of Mormon. I have come to love the Book of Mormon and cross-reference the Bible and Book of Mormon finding the same truths in both volumes of scripture.

Livi answered…
Yes. Mormons definitely regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and believe it comes from God. My life has been blessed infinitely by studying its beautiful teachings.

-
Tyler answered…
Absolutely!!! It says in John 17:3 "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." The only way we can learn more about God and Jesus Christ is by studying all of the scriptures that we are given. Scriptures are the words of prophets and apostles and even Jesus Christ himself. Those words are in the Book of Mormon as well as in the Bible.

Nick answered…
I love the Bible. What an incredible account of God's interactions with His people. I especially love the New Testament because of the many stories we can read about Christ. It helps me so much to see how He acts and to read His teachings from His own life. Furthermore, the epistles are very motivating to me to give my best in following Christ. The Bible is certainly holy scripture, and together with the Book of Mormon, I really feel how it strengthens my personal relationship with my Savior.

Mark answered…
We believe the Bible to be the word of God, as far as it is translated correctly. It is a Book of books written by inspired men in the old world. We believe it is Holy Scripture but we do not believe it contains all of the inspired teachings. The Apostle John concluded his record by noting "And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen"

-
Stuart answered…
Yes we do.We love and cherish the Bible and we need it to know the life of Jesus Christ. We use it hand in hand with the Book of Mormon. They help us understand of our purpose on earth and what God wants for us as his children in this life. The main difference is of where they originated. The Bible is from the Jerusalem and Egypt area and the Book of Mormon is from the Americas. They were both written by prophets who were inspired of God.

-
Jonathan answered…
Yes absolutely! The Bible is verifiable scripture; sacred writings that help us to know God and His love for us. It has taken centuries to communicate through the prophets and apostles to the world, and the Old and New Testament are invaluable insight into the mind and desires of God.
In addition to the Bible, Mormons believe ancient Americans--back in approx. the time the Bible was written--had access to God, and testified boldly of Jesus Christ, too. They were persecuted parallel their Old World Christian counterparts, as many people in the ancient Americas wanted the 'believers in some imaginary being' to just go away or die off. The Book of Mormon details their struggles to obey the prophet's--and later Christ's--teachings, even while their enemies attempted to destroy them for their beliefs, sometimes militarily.
One man in the Book of Mormon stands out in my mind as I write this: a bold Christian military leader named Moroni. Named chief Captain of the righteous in the land, it was his duty to counter a full scale assault/invasion/massacre on the Christ-believers. The invaders outnumbered them, and an internal faction plagued the righteous in their central city, even as they lost city after city on their border. Moroni prayed for guidance to save their liberties and their freedom. He trusted God was with those people...
Thanks for letting me share my thoughts. You can have a copy of the Book of Mormon to join the Bible's testimony of Christ, free from Mormon.org.

Our canon of scripture is made up of four books: Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. We use the King James Version of the Bible. They are all considered scripture and equal with each other.
We absolutely love the Bible. I can't imagine not having all the stories and historical record of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The historical record in the Old Testament points us to Jesus Christ and helps us understand His importance and the importance of keeping His commandments. The epistles and other books of the New Testament help fill out our understanding of Jesus and the Church He organized. The LDS Church could not be complete without the Bible. We have to have it.
In our church services - we have what we call Sunday School. It usually lasts about one hour every Sunday. We have a four year rotating course of study for Sunday School. A full year is dedicated to each topic area. The 4 years of study are:
- New Testament
- Old Testament
- Book of Mormon
- Doctrine & Covenants/Pearl Of Great Price/Church History
Let me finally say - there is a special spirit and power with the Book of Mormon. When one reads the Book of Mormon a special blessing and spirit from God will abide with the reader. It is very powerful and has led to the conversion and retention of millions and millions of readers. If you take the time to sincerely read it - you can also feel the power and spirit that accompanies it.

We believe the Bible to be the Word of God as far as it is translated correctly. The Bible teaches about prophets and Jesus Christ. Likewise, the Book of Mormon teaches about prophets in the Americas as well as Jesus Christ's visit to the Americas. Jesus taught in the Bible about the "other sheep." We believe the other fold of sheep to be those in the Americas. We also regard the Pearl of Great Price and the Doctorine and Covenants to be scripture. I know each of these books are scripture and contain the fullness of the gospel.

One of the basic beliefs of the church is that we believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly. We also believe to be the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. The Bible has been translated many times but gospel scholars have shown that the King James version is the closest to the truth and holy scripture in itself. The Book of Mormon and Bible are like Mac and Cheese. They go great together.

The Bible is the word of God. It testifies of God's love for His children, and teaches us how we can return to live in His presence by developing and acting on our faith in Jesus Christ.
We are blessed to have other testimonies of Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, teaches the pure doctrines of Jesus Christ. It constitutes a second witness of the divinity of Jesus Christ.

Joseph Smith stated in the eighth Article of Faith that, "We believe the Bible to be the Word of God as far as it is translated correctly." Here Joseph Smith is using a more broad definition of the word "translate" than we use today. As he discussed in various places, and the Book of Mormon points out, errors and textual manipulation took place during transmission of the biblical text, and not just during translation.
In light of this, it may be said that Latter-day Saints believe the Bible to be the Word of God in its original and pristine form. What it means to be the "Word of God," however, has never been fully explained. Latter-day Saints believe that God can and does inspire prophets and other ecclesiastical authorities in their exposition of the Gospel, but we can never guarantee freedom from human error or influence. Even Moroni, in the Title Page of the Book of Mormon, accounts for the presence of human error. In this Latter-day Saints are distinguished from many other Christian denominations which hold to inerrancy in the biblical autographs or in their present form.
Latter-day Saints believe that the Bible is scripture, but they also believe in additional books of scripture. The Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price are also found in the Latter-day Saint canon. Unlike most Christian and Jewish groups, however, Mormonism distinguishes between scripture and canon. We believe that the words of the prophets and apostles in addressing the body of the church are scripture, but they are not considered part of the canon. In early Judaism and Christianity there was a similar authority granted scriptural texts long before the notion of a canon was developed. Many texts considered authoritative by early Jews and Christians, such as Enoch and the Shepherd of Hermas, were ultimately excluded when an official canon took shape.

Before coming on my mission, I only thought there was one version of the Bible, the King James. Then I got out here and I'm asked this question all the time along with "What version do you use?"
We believe the Bible to be the word of God. It has gone through many many many translations and has unfortunately lost some of what was once precious. It's still such a fantastic book because it has so much in it that we wouldn't have if we just had the Book of Mormon. I love the Bible, especially the later epistles and the gospels.

-
Andrew answered…
We believe that the Holy Bible is sacred scripture and contains the word of God. In fact, the most important events to any Latter-Day Saint, or any human being for that matter, are contained within its pages the Atonement of Jesus the Christ. The sacrifice of Christ for the sins of all mankind is the absolute foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The eyewitness accounts of that crowning event in human history, paired with the inspired and powerful prophecies and histories contained in the Bible, make it a volume of scripture most sacred to Mormons like me.
People often become confused about our stance on the Bible, I think, due to the fact that the Holy Bible is not the only book of scripture God has revealed to us. Other writings, from other prophets and disciples of Christ both ancient and modern, have been restored or revealed to us. As these books are unique to us, they are all that many people associate with our theology. But while we consider the Book of Mormon and other prophetic records inspired scripture, those writings serve to compliment rather than act as a competition to the Bible. As a Mormon, I have a strong testimony of and am grateful for the Bible.

Yes. In fact, the Old and New Testaments appear first in our cannon, then The Book of Mormon. The Holy Bible and The Book of Mormon complement each other.

-
Bill answered…
We believe the Bible is Holy Scripture. For centuries, the truth revealed in the Bible led countless numbers of men and women to have faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world. Many of these early believers gave their lives as a witness that the words and teachings of the prophets and apostles was true.
We believe that the Old Testament set forth a pattern of God's love for his children. The pattern throughout the Old Testament shows that after God's people fall away from truth, God loved his children so much that he would call a new prophet to lead fallen people back to principles of truth and righteousness. Such prophets included Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Isaiah.
Ultimately, following the pattern of calling prophets to return truth, the New Testament recorded God sending his Son, Jesus Christ to save mankind, and to teach the truth of how we can return to God after this life--by overcoming sin and death. Overcoming sin through repentance and Christ's atonement and grace, and overcoming death through Christ's resurrection.
The New Testament also gives us a pattern of how the church was designed to continue after Christ's resurrection, including replacement of apostles to lead Christ's church. We know from the context of history, however, that severe persecution led to a shattering of church leadership, and doctrinal confusion that would ultimately lead to a reformation movement a millenia later.
We revere the Bible as scripture and God's word.

Mark answered…
Mormons believe the Bible to be the word of God. Furthermore, it is always listed first in our "Standard Works", or lists of books that the church regards as scripture. We do believe that there is more scripture in addition to the Bible, in particular the Book of Mormon, which serves to confirm and clarify the Bible.

Yes! We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. The two books support each other and teach the same doctrine!

Yep! We sure do. We believe in the Bible just as much as we do the Book of Mormon. It's always made me sad that many of our fellow Christians say that Mormons do not believe the Bible. We love the Bible. We study it and refer to it frequently.

-
Emily answered…
Yes.
Mormons believe the Bible, just like other churches.
The only difference is that we understand the Bible was determined to include certain books and writings by organizations BEFORE it was in the hands of the people. I mean to say that before the Bible was in the language of the common people - before the printing press, before everyone had a copy all over the world, only certain leaders had access to it. And so some changes were made, and some things were taken out, and people had votes about which books to include.
Also, we believe that just like Moses or Isaiah or any of the other prophets in the Old Testament, that God still uses prophets today. So we call words by those prophets as "scripture" also.

Mormons hold the sacredness of the Book of Mormon as a second witness to the word of God outlined in the King James Version of the Bible. The 8th Article of Faith reads: "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God".

-
Larry answered…
We love the Bible and constantly refer to it, study it and seek to apply its teachings in our lives. One thing most theologians and Biblical scholars have agreed upon for many years is that the Bible has not been handed down nor translated in its pure form as well as that portions of it have been altered or removed. For this reason we assert that “we believe the Bible, as far as it has been translated correctly.” We also believe the Book of Mormon, which is a unique and further witness of the divine origin and fundamental truthfulness of the Bible.

While I lived in the Bible Belt of the United States, I had a lot of good friends question me about my belief in the Holy Bible. Let me be very clear I LOVE the Old and New Testaments of Jesus Christ, and I actually have a hard time understanding how some people will toss aside the Old Testament as invalid or obsolete. My understanding of God has grown incredibly since I took the time to first read the Bible cover to cover. There are great examples, like the diligence of King David, who, every time before he went to battle, prayed and asked the Lord if he should go forward with his plans. Today, with making choices about college majors, finding a wife, buying a house, obtaining a job, and keeping myself from sin- in all of my battles, I should follow David's example and ask in faith for guidance. God has had a very personal relationship with Biblical figures, and after studying their stories, I can trust that Heavenly Father is eager and anxious to have a personal relationship with me.

The Bible was the first set of scriptures introduced to the world. However, it is not the last! Since the times written of in the Bible, there have been other stories that have been recorded by prophets, and presented to us as additional scriptures to learn of and get to know Heavenly Father, and his son Jesus Christ. Yes, the Bible is scripture, and the word of God, but so are The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price!

When I fist read the Book of Mormon, I knew it was the word of God. I know that today with all my heart. I love the Bible and the teachings of the Savior. The Book of Mormon in no way replaces the Bible. The Bible contains the words of the Savior and the teaching of His Apostles in New Testament times. The Book of Mormon is a record of another group of God's children. I don't know why so much of the world believes there was only one group of people in the world the God cared enough to speak to them. God loves all of His children. And He loves us today!

I love the bible and in our church we do study it and believe it to be the word of God. The Bible contains stories of prophets and Christ from the old world and helps us to see the many works of God as well as to learn of him. Unfortunately much of the important doctrine that may have once been in the Bible has been lost of confused over time leading to a lot of divisions in interpretation of this sacred book. I am thankful for the Book of Mormon that works as another testament of Jesus Christ and helps to clarify what may have been lost from the Bible over time. I am also thankful for the word of God through prophets today that helps to clarify and interpret the Bible and the Holy Ghost that allows me to know for myself what things are true.

-
Andrew answered…
We believe the Holy Bible is Holy Scripture and the word of God. Which begs the question, what on earth is scripture? Where does it come from? Scripture is the inspired writings of God's prophets. For example, Moses was called by God to be a prophet. When he was moved upon by the Holy Spirit (also known as the Holy Ghost) the words he wrote were from God, i.e. the word of God, i.e. scripture. Men such as David, Isaiah, and Jeremiah were also prophets. One of the many roles our Savior and Redeemer Jesus Christ had which on the earth was to be a prophet. All of these men wrote down scripture, until there was quite a lot of it. Several hundred years after Christ's earthly ministry, a bunch of Christians got together to decide which of all the many books of scripture floating around they should put into their "cannon of scripture." This collection, which was named "Bible," which is Greek for "the books," became the common cannon for Christian scripture. All the other works of scripture that weren't included in the Bible? They were thrown out and forgotten. We as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (i.e. Mormon) recognize that not ALL of God's Holy Word is contained in the Holy Bible, which is why we have additional scripture from God, including the Book of Mormon, which we use hand in hand with the Holy Bible.

Yes, Mormons do regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and they do believe the Bible to be the word of God, as far as it is translated correctly. For doctrine and teaching purposes the Mormons use the King James Version of the Bible as we believe it is the closest one to being translated correctly throughout the ages.

-
Steve Sherman answered…
As the other Christians I know, I believe the Bible to be the Word of God. It is incredibly important, in that it not only teaches of the covenants God makes with those who follow Him, but it also provides a witness of Jesus Christ-that he was born of a virgin, grew into manhood, performed a ministry healing both the spirit and the body of those around Him, that He took upon Himself the pains and sins of all mankind, that He hung on the cross for us, and most importantly, that He triumphed in all these things and returned to earth a resurrected being.
The Bible provides eyewitnesses to these events. Although the Bible doesn't contain every Word ever spoken by the Savior, it contains enough of His teachings, and the words and admonition of the prophets to learn truth from error. Good news indeed!
Although the English used in the Bible can sometimes be hard to understand, and sometimes it is hard to understand what the original speakers of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek were trying to convey, it is the Word of God to us. In this day and age of skeptics, where even some Christians do not truly believe in the literal interpretations provided in the Bible, the Book of Mormon adds a powerful second witness to support, not replace, the Bible. The additional witness of the Book of Mormon can help clarify some of the hard to understand wordings and passages in the Bible. God Speaks, and prophets write- this is scripture irrespective of the city, state, continent, or age it happens in.

We absolutely believe the Bible to be the Word of God, as long as it is translated correctly. The scriptures are vital for us to progress in this life. Through the words given to us from ancient prophets we are able to understand God's love for his children on this earth. We believe that regular study of the scriptures, The Book Of Mormon, Bible and other scripture is essential for our personal progression. Through the scriptures we are able to gain knowledge concerning God's commandments as well as how we are to communicate with him personally through prayer. The Bible reveals many of God's attributes and true nature, primarily that he is our Father in Heaven and through His son, Jesus Christ, we are able to return to live with him again. We regularly teach from the Bible at our church meetings and other activities that are church related. Church leaders encourage all members of the church to study both the Bible and The Book of Mormon to increase their knowledge of God's plan of salvation.

It is a blessing from above to have this book in our possession. We use the King James Version of the Bible.

In our 8th Article of Faith it states that "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God." What that means to us is that The Holy Bible is Holy Scripture. We read from the King James Version because we feel that it is the most correct in translation to the original scriptures written in their time. The Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ that was written by many ancient prophets by the spirit of prophecy and revelation. Their words, written on gold plates, were quoted and abridged by a prophet-historian named Mormon. It is not our Bible nor does it replace the Bible, but The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel.

Dave answered…
Good questions. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. (Pearl of Great Price, Eighth Article of Faith.)
A better question is, “Is the Bible the only Holy Scripture that God has revealed to humankind?” The answer is no. God has an open canon of scripture. Though many Christians believe that Christ will reveal no additional truths beyond the end of the Bible, it is Jesus Christ and not man who decides when God is done giving us new knowledge. God has given us additional Holy Scripture, from Abraham, Moses and Matthew in the Pearl of Great Price, from his prophets in the ancient Americas in the Book of Mormon, and from prophets in our day in the Doctrine and Covenants and in General Conference. These words of scripture are precious to us as members of the Church of Jesus Christ.
Christ continues to lead his church today through a living prophet, President Thomas S. Monson. That's why we call it the Church of Jesus Christ. I know this is true through the same powers of personal revelation available to President Monson. Everyone on earth may read these Holy Scriptures and know these truths for themselves, directly from God.
"And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." (Book of Mormon, Moroni 10:5.)

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are some of my favorite books and I can't wait to study them for the rest of my life.

The Holy Bible is the word of God. An Article of Faith written by the Prophet Joseph Smith puts it in the best way "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly..." The Bible has been translated many times, and by many different people. Throughout these various translations, some parts of the Holy Bible have been lost or changed. Everything that hasn't been changed, though, is the word of God, and through modern-day revelation, we know some of the parts that were changed and lost.

Joseph Smith wrote "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly..." Article of Faith #8. The Bible is a Sacred volume of scripture. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I believe it testifies of the divinity of Jesus Christ, that he is my Saviour and Redeemer. It truly is the word of God.

"We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly..."
Of course we regard the Bible as Holy Scripture. In it we learn about the ancient patriarchs, like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the promises God made to them. We learn about the creation of the world and the role of prophets. We learn about commandments and the things God expects from His children. But most importantly, we learn about the life of Jesus Christ as He lived on the Earth. All of these things are important to our theology and our faith.
It is no secret that the Bible has translation flaws. Just look at the many translations that exist today in an effort to provide clarity and understanding for many seeking to know God's word and do His will. The Bible is a narrative passed down over generations, through many hands. It is an imperfect record. We believe that as these sacred texts were passed down, teachings were lost. Through translation efforts of many dedicated scholars and clergy, things were changed - some inadvertently, some to conform to the particular clergy or scholar's personal beliefs. This does not discount the entire book, however. There is still much truth to be found in its pages, and a person can definitely come closer to God by reading from it and applying its teachings.
We as Mormons find great clarity and comfort in additional revelations that have come to modern prophets. We believe that the heavens are not closed, and that God still speaks to His children. As a result, we are not confused by the many contradicting messages the Bible seems to have. We invite anyone interested to read from modern scripture to gain clarity and insight into the Bible. The Book of Mormon, an ancient record translated by the Prophet Joseph Smith, proves the Bible to be TRUE, erases confusion, and allows us to understand God's commandments much more easily.

Many people mistakenly think that Mormons believe the Book of Mormon INSTEAD of the Bible. Some who know little about the church even call the Book of Mormon "The Mormon Bible" with the erroneous belief that it replaces the Old and New Testaments.
Joseph Smith taught very clearly that "we believe the Bible to be the word of God." We believe in both the Old and the New Testaments. We believe that the Bible teaches the gospel of Jesus Christ and is inspired scripture. We treasure the Gospels particularly because of their accounts of the personal ministry of Jesus Christ.
Yes, we also have the Book of Mormon and believe it to be inspired scripture just as the Bible is. But in no way do we discount or devalue the worth of the Bible in bringing us closer to our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon confirms the teachings of the Bible; it does not contradict them. We study the two books of scripture TOGETHER to better and more fully understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

-
Jonathan answered…
Most Certainly! The Old and New Testament are the word of God as recorded by the ancient prophets in their hemisphere of the world. They chronicle the history of Mankind and the ministry of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon is the continuation of this Holy account through the Prophets living on the continent that is now North, Central, and South America. The prophets in the Book of Mormon bore witness of Jesus Christ just as the Ancient Hebrew prophets did in the Eastern lands, only in the West, thus making the Book of Mormon ANOTHER testament of Jesus Christ, not a replacement scripture as commonly misconstrued.

We fully believe that the Bible is the word of God and is Holy Scripture that we can read and apply in our life to help us know how to best follow God. The Bible is an amazing tool that God has given us that brings the spirit into our lives, gives us comfort when we are in times of trial, and helps us know what is right. I know the Bible is the word of God, not because of any archealogical evidence or "proof" that the world can provide. I know that it is the word of God because of the spirit that I feel as I read it's precious words and the testimony it bears of Jesus Christ as our savior and redeemer.

The Bible is the Word of God. I love reading from the Bible and living the teachings that are in it. Inspired men of God originally wrote it. Sadly there have been men who have changed it so that it is not in it's perfect original form. The Bible is an inspired work of God. It tells of the ministry of Jesus Christ among the Jews and organizing His church upon the earth. Both the Old and New Testaments testify of the life and minisrty of Jesus Christ. I am so grateful for the Bible.

Terry answered…
Yes, we love the Bible and it is included in our official canon of scripture. We believe the Bible to be the Word of God as far as it is translated correctly. What that means to me is that we shouldn't take things out of context to prove a point or create a doctrine. We use the King James Version for our official Bible, and even though it is not perfect in its translation from the Greek and Hebrew, we can still read it and be spiritually edified and taught pure doctrine. It does not, however contain all of God's revelations to mankind.
It is important to remember that the scriptures are a byproduct of revelation, and that God has never officially stopped revealing His mind and will to His people. We must accept all of His revelation as true and relevant, thus we must search all HIS scriptures and not just the Bible alone. The Bible along with the Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants and Pearl of Great Price constitute what God has chosen to be our official canon. They complement each other and all testify that Jesus is the Christ, the Savior of World.
As wonderful as Scripture is, I like to say that even if we had none, we would still have the same church! God would continue to speak to the church and reveal His will. This church was established, and guided by revelation. This has always been God's pattern and will continue to be.

The Holy Bible is precious to me because it contains the word of God. I wish that we had more of the word of God. The Bible is full of truth. I thank God for it, and I am grateful for all those who have labored and given their lives that we might have this precious book.

We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God -- 8th Article of Faith.
There are many mysterious passages in the Bible, for which traditional Christianity has no explanation, which are illuminated by the Book of Mormon and by the teachings of the prophet Joseph Smith. This fact was brought home to me by a book that my sister sent when I first joined the Church. "Spurgeon's Devotional Bible" was the King James Bible re-arranged according to a reading schedule, such as you might find in the back of a Protestant hymnal and interspersed with the commentaries of a famous 19th century Baptist minister named Charles Spurgeon. It had an index where you could look up passages by chapter and verse. Many of the passages in the Bible that are significant to Mormons had commentaries that completely glossed over meanings that were now obvious to me as a Mormon. Other passages were left out entirely! Spurgeon's introduction said that many passages in the Bible were unnecessary to read, and were therefore left out of his book.
A few examples:
James 2:14-20 talks about the importance of works to show that you truly have faith and concludes that: "faith without works is dead". Spurgeon's commentary says "We are justified by faith alone but not a faith which is alone and without works". To which my reaction was, "Duh!"
1 Peter 3:18-20 talks about how Jesus preached "to the spirits in prison.” We believe that the Gospel is preached to those who did not have a real opportunity to accept it in this life and that ordinances such as baptism for the dead may be performed on their behalf in the Temple. Spurgeon's commentary said, “This passage nobody understands, though some think they do.”
1 Corinthians 15:29 mentions the practice of baptism for the dead. St Paul was saying that if there was no resurrection, as some were claiming, then why baptize for the dead, if they rise not? Spurgeon's commentary talks about how as one believer dies, another convert fills his place, totally glossing over what St Paul said.
Ezekiel 37:16-20 talks about writing upon the stick of Judah and the stick of Joseph and then bringing the two sticks together. Spurgeon left out this passage entirely. We believe that the stick of Judah is the Bible while the stick of Joseph is the Book of Mormon. In the Book of Mormon, Nephi’s father Lehi explains that they were descendents of Joseph.
Isaiah 29:11-14 talks about a book that is sealed that will be delivered to the learned who cannot read it because it is sealed, which will then be delivered to the unlearned. We believe that this is talking about the Book of Mormon, delivered to the unlearned prophet Joseph Smith. Spurgeon left out the entire chapter.
Genesis 49:8-12 is Jacob's blessing to his son Judah, which Spurgeon says is obviously a prophecy about the coming of Jesus Christ through the line of Judah. Genesis 49:22-26 is Jacob's blessing of his son Joseph. It is equally long and talks about how Joseph's descendants are like branches running over a wall and prevailing to the utmost bounds of the everalasting hills. The Book of Mormon describes people who were descendants of Joseph, who fled Jerusalem shortly before it was destroyed by Babylon in 600 BC, and sailed across the ocean to what we believe is now Central America. Spurgeon's commentary on Joseph's blessing is that Jacob was gushing over in enthusiasm for his favorite son.
In John 10:16, Jesus talks about having other sheep which are not of this fold who must hear his voice. Spurgeon says that he is referring to the Gentiles but in the Book of Mormon, Jesus descends out of heaven to visit the descendants of Joseph after his resurrection and ascension at Jerusalem.
Now, in saying this, I do not mean to imply that Spurgeon was deliberately covering these things up in the Bible. I am sure he was merely interpreting it as best he understood it. Like the religious leaders in Jesus' time, he too thought he had things all figured out.

Mormons love and respect the Bible. I personally love to read and re-read the stories of Jesus in the gospels. The Bible will make anyone that consistently studies it wise and principled in a world where there are many confusing voices.
We accept the Bible for what it is; a select collection of recorded prophecies and laws given over thousands of years by men and women that were inspired and directed by The Lord. We do not, however, consider it to be the only source that God has provided for guidance in our time. It is Holy Scripture, given for the benefit of man in his journey through mortality. But we do believe that the Bible itself establishes a pattern of continuing revelation.

Jacob answered…
The Bible is holy scripture as is any doctrine that comes from the prophets of God. We believe that the Bible is not the only word of God because there have been prophets that have not been recorded in the Bible. The Book of Mormon is a record of the prophets from ancient America and also contains the word of God and another testiment of Jesus Christ our savior and redeemer.

Of course the Holy Bible is scripture, and it contains much of the word of God, but God's words can hardly be contained in a singular book, nor a vast collection of them. God speaks today as much as He ever has spoken, and the words He speaks to each of us personally, and to His living prophets, are just as important as the writings of His prophets of old.

I love the Bible! I love the stories of the Prophets and the teachings found therein. There is so much to learn from the Old and New Testaments, of Christ and His teachings. This scripture is a gift from God. I realize that over time, some of the Bible has been lost. Through latter day prophets, we are able to gain a better understanding of the parts that have been lost. God speaks to us through His prophets and who better to interpret scripture than God Himself?

The Bible is a wonderful set of scriptures and we can learn much by studying it. Some of the translations have made certian scriptures confusing and contradictory. But, the bulk of the Bible is useful and good. Lessons taught and the faith demonstrated by those of the Old and New Testaments set a great example for each of us. The teachings of our Savior, in the New Testament are invaluable. To read, ponder and pray about the Bible provides many insights and understandings

We believe the Bible to be the word of God. A common misunderstanding is that we do not read the Bible or that we have another Bible, the Book of Mormon. This could not be farther from the truth. We do have additional scripture, namely the Book of Mormon, but we are also taught and encouraged to read and study the Bible as it has some of the most powerful teachings from the prophets of God. I personally love to read the Bible especially the stories. I share these stories with my own children. They are also taught in our primary classes to all the children. Stories such as that of Noah and the flood or of Jesus healing the blind or of Peter walking on water to meet Jesus. With that I want to share that I know that the scriptures, particularly the Bible are the word of God.

The Bible witnesses to the whole world that God loves us and has been involved in our welfare for centuries. It contains records and prophecies from Gods witnesses from the time of Adam to the Apostles and is invaluable to us. Indeed, without the Bible we would literally be in the dark regarding our Savior Jesus Christ and the meaning of His ministry and sacrifice. To Mormons, the Bible is Holy and seen as the word of God. It is of utmost importance in our scriptural canon.
Unlike some, Mormons do not view the Bible as complete or in some way final. It is God's word not all of God's word which; of course, cannot be reduced or somehow limited to one book. God has given His word to peoples all over the world throughout human history. Of course we don't have records of all that God has said to his children but in the Bible we have a part. The Bible, together with other Holy records both ancient and modern are given to us as a guide for us in our lives here on earth. Ultimately, all of these lead us back to God our Father.
