What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

Our body is a precious gift from God. To help keep our bodies and our minds healthy and strong, God gave a law of health to Joseph Smith in 1833. This law is known as the Word of Wisdom (see Doctrine and Covenants 89:1-21).

In addition to emphasizing the benefits of proper eating and physical and spiritual health, God has spoken against the use of:

  • Tobacco.
  • Alcohol.
  • Coffee and tea.
  • Illegal drugs.

God promises great physical and spiritual blessings to those who follow the Word of Wisdom. Today, the scientific community promotes some of the same principles that a loving God gave to Joseph Smith nearly two centuries ago.

Mark answered…

The word of wisdom is the Lord's law of health. We abstain from drugs, tobacco, alcohol, coffee, and tea, and are encouraged to eat wholesome food and grains, and not eat excessive meat. I am asked all of the time by my fellow residents at the hospital why I don't drink coffee, and how I can stay awake all night on call without it. I don't consider it a sacrifice, though, and am as awake and perform as well as any. It is true that the body will be more healthy when following the word of wisdom, the but the main benefit is spiritual. The knowledge that you are in line with the the Lord's teaching is the most important thing.

William answered…

Many people are confused about the Word of Wisdom. It is really very simple. If you truly adhere to the Word of Wisdom you will never need to be addicted to a substance or have to deal with the heartache and suffering that come with the use of illegal drugs, headaches from lack of caffeine, various cancers or emphysema caused by tobacco or chew. Along with a sensible diet the Word of Wisdom is just a commonsense guide to a healthy body and mind. I know of what I speak when I say ignore it at your own peril.

Stacey answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a guideline for healthy living given to us from God. It outlines healthy practices as well as things which should be avoided. For example, eating whole grains and fruits and vegetables in season, and abstaining from the consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs. The Word of Wisdom was given to us as a commandment, with promised blessings - both physical and spiritual - for those who adhere to it.

Paul answered…

The Word of Wisdom is guidance from God through a modern prophet to all of God's children. It is also the way that Mormons keep their bodies healthy. The Word of Wisdom instructs us to avoid harmful foods and chemicals, and also instructs us to eat healthy food, like Whole Grains, and Vegetables, and exercise regularly.

Members of the Church are promised that if they live the Word of Wisdom their bodies will be healthy. I have personally kept the Word of Wisdom and I have found great blessings from so doing.

Joe answered…

A guide to keep our bodies healthy. If our bodies and minds are healthy then we can better perform and fulfill our duties to heavenly father and grow in the gospel

Sheila answered…

It talks about our healthy and what God expect from us, our action about our body that is a gift from Him. Our body is a temple and we must take care of it. So the Lord has advised us about things that we should do to be happier and have a better life.

Mike answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a health code the Lord has set for us. The main things it states is that we should not partake in alcohol, drugs, smoking, coffee, and tea. It is not only just for health reasons but also for spiritual reasons. If we have an addiction to something, it puts that addiction as a higher priority then God. The Lord knows what He is doing and if we obey his commandments we feel the spirit and live the life our Heavenly Father has planned for us.

Pam answered…

The Word of Wisdom was revelation brought to us through Joseph Smith From Chirst. Joseph was concerned ahout the use of tobacco in meetings with the brethren. He went to Heavenly Father in prayer and inquired on it. The revelation he received can be found in Doctrine and Covenants 89. We should avoid coffee, tea, tobacco, alcohol, and that we should eat grains, fruits, and vegatables and also eat meat sparingly.

Jana! answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a health code. We know that in the Bible God told Moses that there were some things He wanted His people to keep out of their bodies, and in our day, God has given us similar advice. And science is slowly proving what God has already warned us about: alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, coffee, tea, and anything else addictive should be kept out of our bodies. He also told us that eating right (fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, etc.) will help us be healthy.

Just as He always does, God promises blessings to those who follow His commandments. I've seen how living the Word of Wisdom has helped me have "a clean body, a clear mind, and a spirit in tune with the Lord" (to quote a song from the Primary Children's Songbook). While it may seem like a long list of "don't"s, the Word of Wisdom is actually a "why-bother-with-these-nasty-things-when-I-have-so-much-more-to-offer-you" list from God.

Kelli answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a code of health for our bodies and minds. It teaches us to avoid things that are harmful to our bodies and helps us understand how we can best take care of the bodies that God has given us. That way, our bodies and minds can be healthy and clean to be able to hear God answering our prayers and do what He would have us do.

Hannah answered…

As well as keeping spiritually healthy, we are instruced on the ways to keep us phyiscally healthy. When we are healthy and not weighed down by physical trials, we can be happier and be more willing to share the gospel with others.
While some physical trials cannot be prevented or fixed, th Word of Wisdom gives us guidlines of the things we can control. A few of these things include refraining from alchol, tabacco, hot drinks (coffee and tea), and illegal drugs. We are also counseled to eat healthy, keeping from too much red meat, sweets, etc, and also to excersize.
While at times these things can seem restricting, these guidlines keep us from addictions and preventable sickness that would end up being more restrictive.
I believe that the Word of Wisdom, along with other guidelines in the gospel, are not restricting, but in the end give us more freedom than we would have otherwise.

Dan answered…

The Word of Wisdom is the Lord's law of health. It began as a revelation given to the prophet Joseph Smith, and was accepted and affirmed by the church as part of its doctrine. Through that revelation the Lord revealed rules and guidelines about how we should manage our health and treat our bodies. For example, the Word of Wisdom states that we are not to partake of substances that would be addictive, or that would be harmful to our bodies and spirits. These substances include but are not limited to alchohol, illicit drugs, tabacco, coffee, and tea. In the same revelation the Lord condones every good, wholesome food for the use and benefit of man. He counsels that moderation should be used in all things concerning our diet and well-being. In short, the Word of Wisdom is an inspired document containing the key principles a person needs to live by to have a long and healthy life.

G. McIntyre answered…

In the 89th Section (i.e. chapter) of a book called the "Doctrine and Covenants" (a book of modern day revelation held to be scripture) the first verse starts out with "A Word of Wisdom, for the benefit ..." It is for this phrase that the teachings of this section are known by.

If you will, it could be termed a health code. In this section, the Lord, the designer of our bodies, gives us some great tips on how to take care of it. For example, it says "wine or strong drink...is not good" and "tobacco is not for the body". Regarding some of the stuff that is good for us, it says "all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man" and "All grain is ordained for the use of man and of beasts, to be the staff of life" Wheat receives special mention: "All grain is good for the food of man .... Nevertheless, wheat for man, corn for the ox ..."

While this short section of scripture (just 21 verses) lists some dos and don'ts, I think the overall tone is we should take good care of our bodies and be always thankful for the things God gives us.

Perhaps more importantly, out of the 21 verses, the last 4 verses, or almost 20 percent of the text, lists amazing blessings for those who abide by the Word of Wisdom. But I won't mention them here. I'll let you look them up! Try this link: http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/89 (The full text of this section is included here).

I think another way of looking at the Word of Wisdom is it's a means by which we keep our bodies pure and clean so the Holy Ghost can be with us.

Paul answered…

In the 19th century, before scientists had done some of the research we know about today, a revelation was given to a man, named Joseph Smith, that is sometimes seen as the Mormon health code. God related how we would benefit from eating furit, vegetables, and grains (if meat was eaten it was to be a small amount) and he mentioned 4 things that he wanted us not to take into the body - tobacco, alcohol, tea and coffee. This revelation is known as The Word of Wisdom.

Scott Cleghorn answered…

It's a law from God that will help keep our bodies and minds strong. It speaks against the use of tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs, coffee and tea. God promises blessings to those who follow this law.

Megan answered…

It's a commandment we have been given in order to keep our bodies clean and healthy. Our bodies are temples, and the Word of Wisdom details some of the things we should and should not be putting into our bodies. It also promises us great blessings if we follow the instruction it gives us.

Melinda answered…

The Word of Wisdom is guidance to leading healthy lives. Joseph Smith inquired to the Lord about how some members in the early days smoked tobacco during their congregational meetings. The Lord revealed through revelation the Word of Wisdom. Many regulations such as no drugs, alcohol, and even coffee and tea were said to be unhealthy to our body years before scientists discovered the same thing. Our bodies are like temples because they house something extremely precious: our spirits. The Lord loves us dearly and wants our spirits to be protected by a healthy body. You can find the Word of Wisdom in D&C 89.

Brandilyn answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a set of instructions on how to care for our bodies. A body is a gift from God, and as such, it should be treated with as much care and respect as possible. We're encouraged to stay away from harmful or addictive substances, to eat healthy foods, stay physically active, and to get plenty of rest. The Word of Wisdom helps us keep our bodies strong and full of energy to do the work we need them to do.

Jennifer answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a basic health code we live. We believe is our body is a made of God and we should keep it clean and healthy. "To help keep our bodies and our minds healthy and strong, God gave a law of health to Joseph Smith in 1833. " In this law of health, we abstain from Tobacco, Alcohol, Coffee, tea, and Illegal drugs. As we faithfully keep this law of health, we are promised great physical and spiritual blessings. I'm so grateful to have guidance today to help me be healthier.

Skyler answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a law set by Heavenly Father to help us take care of our bodies, which are compared to temples in the scriptures. it sets forth the things that are healthy that our bodies need. It also sets forth the things that we should not take into our bodies, namely five specifice things
Alcohol
Tobacco
Coffee
Tea
Illegal Drugs

Many blessings of health and knowlege are promised to us as we obey this law.

Franz answered…

It's a law of health which will bless those who obey it.
Not only it shows that we should abstain from tea, coffee, alcohol and any substance that is dangerous/addictive, but it has "do" instructions.
It teaches to eat wholemeal, fresh, seasonal produce, and to avoid meat during periods that are not winter/cold/famines. How many lives would be followed if everybody would simply eat natural and seasonal food and eat meat only sparingly....
How many illnesses are caused by eating junk food and not enough live, fresh food?

David answered…

◘ The Word of Wisdom is the law given by revelation to the prophet Joseph Smith regarding what we should and should not use in our bodies. It is a standard that we believe blesses both physically and spiritually.

Sheila answered…

The word of wisdom is like a set of guidelines to help you to make the best decisions for yourself such as eating fruits and vegtables, exercise, getting enough sleep, eating meat in moderation and staying away from substances that could cause addiction that can cause you to feel misearble and trapped in which makes it difficult to be as close as you can to your Heavenly Father. The blessings of peace that come from following this can not be substituted and feels great.

Jack answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a health code that church members live by. It's not anything strange, we don't smoke, Its bad for you. We don't drink, it's bad for you. We don't do drugs, they're bad for you. Why don't we? Just like the old saying, "If it hurts, don't do it" Those things are harmful to our bodies, so we don't do them. It's a no-brainer.

Darla answered…

Heavenly father wants us to take good care of our bodies...so we do not put things into our bodies that could cause addictions, because they are not healthy, and we think about the food we eat, and the drinks we drink so we can keep our bodies healthy and continue to make good choices. Some things, like alcohol and illegal drugs can aid in poor choices, and take away our ability to choose all together...causing us to do things we normally wouldn't do.
Cigarettes are full of toxins that can cause disease, And other health problems. It's also very addicting....which means we no longer have the right to choose, because it consumes us, and controls us by making it so hard to stop....
Coffee and tea also have the ability to be addicting and so they are not healthy.
We are taught that taking care of our bodies is possible thru limiting our red meat intake, eating fresh fruit and veggies that are in season, :)

Jim answered…

It is the Lord's law for sustaining good health and moderation in the things we bring into our bodies, which the Savior referred to as temples. Much like temples the things we bring into our bodies need to help keep them as clean as possible so the Lord's Spirit can reside there. It is possible for us to partake of things that can prevent the Lord's Spirit from being with us. The Word of Wisdom teaches us how to keep our bodies pure.

Kris answered…

It is the church's law of health, given by revelation to the prophet Joseph Smith (founder of the Church). It includes both proscriptive (no alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea, and harmful drugs) and prescriptive (grains, vegetables and fruits, meat sparingly) rules. Promised blessings for obedience to the Word of Wisdom include health, wisdom, and knowledge.

Livi answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a spiritual law given by the Lord to the members of the restored church. It is a health code that tests one's faith in the Lord and provides many health benefits, but more importantly spiritual blessings.

Mark answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a commandment from God for His people to refrain from taking into our bodies substances that are harmful to us. This specifically means alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, coffee and tea. We are also counseled to eat meat sparingly, and refrain from anything that can become habit forming.

Sendys answered…

The Word of Wisdom is basically latter-day revelation given to Joseph Smith that helps us take care of our bodies by avoiding such things that would harm us. These things are the following coffee, tea, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. It makes sense to me to avoid putting these things in my body and the Word of Wisdom assures me of that.

David answered…

The Word of Wisdom is God's law of health. The name comes from a phrase used in a revelation to Joseph Smith (Doctrine and Covenants, section 89), in which the law is given. In addition to emphasizing the benefits of proper eating and physical and spiritual health, God has spoken against the use of tobacco, alcohol, coffee and tea, and Illegal drugs. God promises great physical and spiritual blessings to those who follow the Word of Wisdom.

If we carefully study the Bible, it should not be surprising that God is concerned with what we take into our bodies. He warned Adam of the fruit, saying, "For in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." The Israelites were given a strict law of health in the Law of Moses.

I personally live the Word of Wisdom because I want to obey God's commandments, whatever they may be. I can see the (huge) physical benefits of following it, but more importantly, my body and spirit can be kept pure that I may be prepared and worthy to receive guidance each and every moment from the Holy Ghost.

George answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a guideline of how we can respect our bodies by being mindful of the healthy food and drink we take into our bodies.

Dayna answered…

The Word of Wisdom is revelation that was given to the Prophet Joseph Smith about what we should and should not take into our bodies to maintain our health. Because our bodies are precious gifts from God, He has given us instruction on how to take care of them. As we eat healthy foods such as vegetables, fruits, grains, and a little meat we will get the nutrients we need to be healthy. We have been warned to avoid tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea, and illegal drugs. They harm our body and our spirit.

Jed answered…

The word of wisdom is a law of health that was given to us by God, through the Prophet Joseph Smith. Just as in old testament times, we have a health code for our day and age. The word of wisdom includes the importance of maintaining a healthy diet. It also teaches that we should refrain from certain substances such as: tobacco, alcohol, drugs, coffee, tea, and anything else that could potentially harm our bodies. The greatest blessing that comes from living the "word of wisdom" is being more in tune with God's spirit and being able to receive personal revelation from Him on a daily basis.

Naomi. answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a set of principles for healthy living that the Lord gave us through His prophet, Joseph Smith. It includes both do's and don'ts: do eat grains, fruits, vegetables, herbs, do eat meat sparingly; don't drink alcohol, use tobacco or harmful drugs, or drink coffee and caffeinated tea. The purpose of this commandment is to keep our bodies free from addiction and to allow us to most fully feel and be guided by the Holy Ghost.

Stephanie answered…

The Word of Wisdom is simply a health code. It tells people what to put into their body that is good such as grains, fruits and veggies. It also speaks of how to eat a little meat between meals. The second thing it speaks of is about the things not to put into ones body. Not to smoke or drink...as both do damage to ones body. It also speaks about not drinking hot liquids--or rather tea and coffee.

Logan Fergus answered…

I have really come to love the Word of Wisdom. I've really come to understand why we don't partake of certain harmful substances. Yes, it may not make sense to alot of people, alot of the time we might not understand completely one of God's commandments, but this one makes so much sense. I've really come to enjoy, and love the blessings I recieve from living the Word of Wisdom. I believe that all things, no matter what need it provides, should be used, and taken in moderation, or rationing, or whatever you want to call it. To much of one thing isn't good for us, for our bodies, or spirit. I know that by living this commandment, I have felt the spirit stronger in my daily life, by leading me, and gaining a better understanding of our Heavenly Father.

Aaron answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a guide to living both a healthier and more spiritually in-tune life. By both abstaining from harmful and addictive substances, and eating more healthily we can more fully enjoy the blessings that life has to offer. I hope to be active and able to keep up with my grandchildren some day.

While some may suggest that in moderation coffee, tea and alcohol are not harmful to the body, I believe that God has revealed that this is not true. God created the human body. I imagine He knows a thing or two about its upkeep. He doesn't give us commandments like this to limit us, but like a loving parent teaching a child He gives us commandments as a framework. If we work within that safe framework, we will lead the happiest possible life.

I don't mind abstaining from coffee, tea, alcohol or other harmful or addictive substances. The blessings I receive in return are health, and an increased sensitivity to the things of the Spirit.

Mike answered…

The word of wisdom is our standard of how to take care of our bodies by the things we put into them. It was given by revelation to Joseph Smith in 1833. We do not smoke or chew tobacco or use any illegal drugs. Mormons also do not drink alcoholic beverages, coffee, or tea (such as green or black tea; herbal teas are ok). Caffeine is not the only reason abstain from drinking coffee, because the word of wisdom does not mention caffeine. Some mormons, by their interpretation of the word of wisdom, choose not to drink caffeine, while others do. People often ask me what's wrong with coffee and tea and why I'm not supposed to drink them. I do not know all the reasons for God's commandments and I am unable to answer this question. However, in 1833, when this law was given, no one new about the harms of smoking and tobacco, yet it was in the word of wisdom. It was not until more than a hundred years later when we learned that tobacco can cause cancer as well as cause many other ailments. I therefore believe that I should follow the word of wisdom no matter if I know the reason or not. The word of wisdom is not just a list of "dont's" though; there are many "do's" also where we learn to eat certain things in moderation to keep our bodies healthy.

Jessica Leigh Bernard answered…

The Word of Wisdom is to not drink any hot drinks like coffee or tea, to not smoke cigarettes, to not drink alcohol and to not do illegal drugs

Benjamin Thomas answered…

Two of the most important reasons that we are here on earth are to gain a physical body and to learn how to control it. Our Father in Heaven loves us. He knows what we need, and he gives us guidance. The Word of Wisdom was given as a token of our Father's love and as a protection against things that would harm us.
Command and encouragement are given to eat healthily and use wisely the resources that we are given. It's pretty basic: eat fruits and veggies, eat meat in moderation, etc. We are also told to stay away from certain things: Alcohol, Tobacco, Illegal Drugs, and Coffee and Tea. (Yes, we can drink soda!) A common misconception, even among members of the church, is that anything with caffeine is discouraged, mainly because it is present in both coffee and tea. That isn't true. We don't know all the reasons why we are asked to avoid certain things. We do know, and we are learning, that just like a parent with a small child, God knows what's "Yummy", "Icky", and "Medicine".
A common question for many is "Why is it that the Word of Wisdom doesn't talk about overeating, or eating disorders, or exercise, etc..." It is because the Word of Wisdom was never meant to be a comprehensive health code. It is token of our Father's love and a warning against "evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men." (Doctrine & Covenants 89:4 lds.org/scriptures).
Living the Word of Wisdom will bless you greatly. See Doctrine & Covenants 89:18-21

This is a Plan that helps us to stay healthy and strong. It advises not to use tobacco or drink coffee or tea and to stay away from alcohol and drugs. It also suggests eating healthy foods.

Jamie answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a code of conduct church members are asked to live. It includes no alcohol, coffee, tea or smoking, we are encouraged to get enough sleep and eat healthy proportions. Blessings come from living the Word of Wisdom.

Kayleigh answered…

To me, the Word of Wisdom is just that -- a word of wisdom. It is literally a very wise code of conduct that we as Latter-Day Saints live by. We are taught that our bodies are not our own; they are a precious gift from God that is given to us to house our spirits while we are on earth. We need to respect them and treat them the best way we can. The most popular ones people know about are the abstinence from tobacco, alcohol, coffee and tea. I have chosen to live my life in accordance to these laws and I have seen my life blessed. I had friends throughout middle school and high school that chose to start drinking. I look at them today, years later, and they are tied down by the addictions they have created for themselves.
Furthermore, I don't want to toot my own horn or anything, but I've been blessed with a good body. My very best friend is a body builder and aspiring personal trainer, and her and I have been working out together for a long time. To me, the Word of Wisdom is taking care of the wonderful body I have been given, by exercising and eating healthily. I am not only physically blessed by this, but it is easier for me to be close to the Spirit when my body is healthy and well.
I have an extremely strong testimony of the Word of Wisdom. It blesses my life every day and the lives of those around me. I stay free from the heavy chains of addiction and have the freedom of a healthy body, which is the greatest blessing I can ask for.

Nick answered…

The Word of Wisdom focuses on keeping our bodies and minds clean and virtuous. It instructs us to stay away from coffee, alcohol, tea, tobacco, and other illegal or dangerous substances. We know that as we abstain from partaking in these things, we will be blessed.

Stu answered…

The Word of Wisdom which we talk about is pretty basic. It is about avoiding substances which are addictive or which have the potential to become addictive like tea, coffee, alcohol, tobacco, and illegal or illicit drugs. We are also encouraged to enjoy all food stuffs such as meat, grains, fruit and vegetables in moderation and to look after our bodies. We aren't told to avoid fast food, but a natural progression extending from living the Word of Wisdom would be to enjoy it occasionally as a treat. In return for following these principles we are promised by our Heavenly Father that we shall have great health benefits.

I find it compelling that these principles to healthy living were given to Joseph Smith in 1833, long before the health risks of smoking/tobacco use and alcohol were known to science and the health professions. this is another building block of my testimony of the truthfulness of the Church and the gospel Doctrines we are taught.

Irene answered…

The Word of Wisdom has to do with health. It is revelation from God that teaches us how to be healthy. God tells, through the Word of Wisdom, that we should not drink coffee, alcohol, or smoke. He promises that if we stay away from unhealthy things and eat healthy, our bodies and minds will be strong.

Tim answered…

The Word of Wisdom is God's Law of health here on the earth. It is a series of commandments that teach us how to take care of our bodies. In return for following this commandment God promises that not only will we be blessed with physical health but also that our minds will be clear and open to the promptings of the Holy Ghost.

Reyna answered…

the word of wisdom is something that needs to be followed because our heavenly father wants us to be healthy. Our body is a temple and there is no reason for us to damge it with harmful iteams such as coffee, tea or put any piercing on them. We were made this way for a reason and we should love ourselfs the way heavenly father loves us.

Kayla answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a revelation from God that tells us how best to take care of our bodies. Most people know it because it tells us that we are not to smoke or drink alcohol or coffee. But not only that, it tells us what are the best things for us to eat. For example, grains, fruits and vegetables are strongly encouraged and meat is encouraged to be taken in moderation. It comes with a promise that if you follow it, you will have the strength you need to do everything your life requires of you and that you will be healthy!

Stephen answered…

A body is a vessel for the spirit. In order for the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, we must be clean and worthy. My body is a temple, and I make sure it stays very well maintained. Healthy living continuously invites God to lead and guide me in paths of righteousness all the days of my life.

Jared answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a healthy lifestyle guide. It informs us how to have healthy physical bodies and how the state of our physical body affects our spirtuality. It also explains why there are substances on the earth that aren't good for us to consume. Everything has a purpose, and things don't exist just for the purpose of tempting man.

Nicholas answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a very hard concept for 99% of the world to accept or even comprehend. It is a guide to keeping our bodies and minds healthy. It counsels us on what to take into our bodies and what not to take in. Some of the main substances God has not to allow into our bodies are alcohol, drugs, tea, coffee, and tobacco. This is because of the damage it causes to our bodies. When we are under the influence of these substances, we are not in control. This is one of the most helpful guides we have. It frees us from addiction and gives us more time to focus on the true joys of life. There are too many good times that are wasted having good times. What good times are you looking to have? Eternal or temporal?

Lainee answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a health code and greatest blessing for us to live given to us by our Heavenly Father. He loves us so much that he wants us to keep the bodies that he gave us pure and healthy so that we can return to live with him someday. There are so many blessings that come from living the Word of Wisdom that as you follow his example he will bless you with those blessings that he has in store for you.

One of the blessings that he has given us is the opportunity to run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint. That is why I live the Word of Wisdom so that I have the energy, health, and strength that I need to continue on in my journey and especially to keep my body pure and clean!

Maryanne answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a revelation received of God to all of us, to protect us against evil conspiring. and teaches us God's diet plan. the most amazing aspect of this is that it was revealed to us in the mid 1800's
.....................................................................................
in the most simplest of explanations........................................................
Tobacco is bad for us - but is an herb like other herbs has its uses (external use for bruises) - we now know of the conspiring that had happened there.
drinking hard alcohol is bad for us to drink but good for sterilization (washing the body)
All Wholesome herbs are good to use with prudence and skill
eat your veggies and fruits with thankfulness in their season
eat meat sparingly and wild meat in times of famine.....................................................................................................................................

the most controversial though is the prohibited use of Hot drinks and the encouraged use of barley drinks
............................................
Hot drinks
it was revealed to us further that Hot drinks meant coffee and tea specifically. we can see how these two drinks are bad for our bodies. coffee is dehydrating and highly addictive. Black tea is fermented. is very bad for us highly addictive and hold none of the beneficial nutrients that a Camellia herbal infusion would hold for medicinal purposes.
.....................................................
what then about caffeine. Caffeine is an herb, like tobacco it has its uses, but like alcohol & coffee it is addictive. I personally feel that caffeine is ok when used has a medicine. drink a soda to stay awake, or to relieve a headache, but avoid the daily routine. anytime any addiction is in control we are not, and that is against the word of wisdom, and the Gospel of Christ.
................................................
Barley drinks
a lot of people think this means beer is ok. it is not. Barley water is a mild drink, full of nutrition. as are many other grain and herb water drinks. and it can be made to be very yummy. my kids love it. don't believe me it is a common drink... listen to the Mary Poppins song the children sing about who they want for a new nanny. - it is made by boiling barley pearls for about a half hour and straining adding honey and lemon and chilling until luke warm and serve. good cold too, but I like it half warm.

.........................................................................
The end of the Word of Wisdom is a promise from God that if we do these things we will be blessed with health and with wisdom.
............................................................................................................................
as I have studied herbalism and natural medicine I have found that God's diet plan protects us from the preprocessed foods, the Bpa in our canned goods, the various mystery ingredients called natural and artificial flavorings etc. it is also the best diet plan for optimum health. leaves out all he extreme diet plans atkins and grapefruit diets etc. and as I strive to live the word of wisdom, I have found that great treasures of wisdom have been opened up to me, especially revealing how wonderful God is and how much he loves us to have given us this great bit of help for us, so long ago, way before it became such a big issue. but I am glad he did and that it is here to help guide us.

Stephen answered…

To me the word of wisdom keeps us from attaching ourselves to something. Like an addiction. If you are addicted to something you are controlled by that thing. I want to be free from anything controlling me and I want to make my own decisions. That is why I live the word of wisdom

The word of wisdom is basically guidelines to help you keep your body healthy. It includes things like: eat meat sparingly and try to eat lots of fruits and veggies and grains. Really it tells you what any health or diet expert would if you wanted to get healthy.

Cameron answered…

The Word of Wisdon is a commandment that God has given us through Revelation. It is to abstain from 5 things. Tobacco, Alcohol, Illegal drugs, Coffee, and Tea. These are all things that are not good for us to take into our bodies (D&C 89) Great blessings are promised when we follow the commandments. By keeping the Word of wisdom, we can keep our bodies clean and healthy, and our spirits edified.

Jeff answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a principle that each Mormon lives. It is a principle that helps us physically and spiritually. We refrain from smoking, drinking, and doing drugs. We eat healthy foods and refrain from eating to much junk food. No bad things in the body. Our body is a gift from Heavenly Father and should be treated as such.

Dan answered…

The Lord has given us a law of health called the Word of Wisdom to keep our minds and bodies healthy. We do not smoke or use illegal drugs, nor do we drink alcohol, coffee, or tea. I love to play sports, and I have personally seen the blessings in my life from following these principles. For example, I know that I have had more energy and focus than I would have had otherwise, and I have also been able to recover from serious injuries.

Steele Kizerian answered…

It is law of health...a health code. It is that we should be healthy, exercise, eat fruits and vegetables and grains etc. It warns us and provides wisdom in not drinking alcohol, doing drugs, smoking, coffee, and tea because of the harm it does to our body and our soul.

Craig answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a health law. It is a Revelation given to the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1833. Joseph Smith's wife Emma had some questions about the behavior of some of the brethren and she asked Joseph to pray about it. Joseph Smith received an answer and it is the Word of Wisdom. I personally have a testimony of the Word of Wisdom. As I have lived the Word of Wisdom, the Lord has blessed me with great health and I have been able to play in all my basketball games in high school and college. The Word of Wisdom instructs us to stay away from Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco, Coffee, and Tea. It also instructs us to eat healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, grains, and meats. So pretty much the food pyramid we have today.

Alicia! answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a commandment that leads to better physical, mental, and spiritual health. We are told to completely avoid use of tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea, or any other unwholesome products. Meat should be used in moderation and vegetables/fruits (in season) are for our use. As we treat our bodies better, the mind and spirit are stronger.

Lauren answered…

The Word of Wisdom teaches us how to take the best care of our bodies. It teaches us to eat healthy fruits and vegetables, meat sparingly and keeping our bodies clean and free from harmful things. This includes restriction on alcohol, tobacco, hot drinks, including cofee and tea and illegal drugs and to not abuse prescription drugs. In return Heavenly Father has promised us health and strength and following this wisdom that was revealed to Joseph Smith in 1833, will keep us clean and happy.

Mike answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a way of life that we as members live. It is God's health code for his children to keep our bodies and our minds healthy and strong. It was a revelation that was given to Joseph Smith. This revelation is basically the food pyramid that we have nowadays. What you should eat fruits, veggies, meat, grains etc. And what you shouldn't partake of tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea and illegal durgs. It is amazing how this was given to Joseph Smith in 1833. Simply amazing.

Adrian answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a commandment relating to the health of our bodies. To me, the most important aspect of the Word of Wisdom is that we should abstain from tobacco, alcohol, coffee & tea, and illegal drugs. I followed this commandment during my teenage years and found it to be a huge blessing. I wasn't even tempted to use those substances because I had been taught the Word of Wisdom my whole life. I believe that avoiding these substances isn't only good for your physical health, but also emotional health. These all addictive substances. It is important to have a clear mind and be free of addictions in order to have healthy emotional and spiritual feelings.

Robyn answered…

The Word of Wisdom is the Lord's law of health for us. God has given us this protection to benefit us. By avoiding coffee, tea, tobacco, alcohol and drugs we receive many blessings from God. When we avoid these substances, we are promised blessings of health.

Shalyce answered…

The Word of Wisdom is our belief in abstaining from tobacco, alcohol, coffee/tea, and illegal drugs. It was given as a law of health to Joseph Smith in 1833, which was long before science had proven any of the substances were addictive or detrimental to our health.

A common misconception of our church is that we are "controlled" or "restricted" based on the Word of Wisdom. Our church believes in free agency, the ability for us to make choices for ourselves. Being under the influence or addiction of said substances is not only bad for our health, but restrain us from having free agency.

Jessi answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a set of rules about what is healthy to consume. We are not to consume alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, etc... The Word of Wisdom was not given to control us, but rather to protect us from things that might control us and make us lose our ability to make good decisions through addiction or altered states of consciousness.

Jared answered…

Shortly after the LDS Church was organized in 1830, there were some disagreements over the Church's position on popular health practices. As a result, Joseph Smith prayed to ask God what position He wanted the Church to take on health practices. We now call God's answer "the Word of Wisdom."

Basically, the word of wisdom tells us that God gave us our bodies as a gift. He wants us to take good care of them, to be smart about what we eat, to eat a balanced diet, and to avoid popular trends because they have a tendency to harm rather than help us. Later LDS prophets prayed for clarification, and today the official policy warns against tobacco, alcoholic drinks, coffee, tea, and harmful drugs. It also encourages us to eat whole grains and limit meat.

Those who follow the Word of Wisdom are promised improved health, brain function, and spirituality. Even non-religious groups today have learned scientifically how accurate the Word of Wisdom is (well over 150 years later).

The original revelation is found in Doctrine and Covenants, Section 89, which you may view at lds.org

Hilary answered…

The Word of Wisdom is "the Lord's Law of Heath." There are a few things you need to know about us to understand it. One, we believe in continuing revelation that a prophet today can receive revelation for the Church and the world. Two, that we believe that our bodies are a part of our eternal identity they are a gift from God and sacred. The first prophet of the Restored church, Joseph Smith, received revelation that we should treat our bodies with respect, and gave us some specific guidelines. Eat healthfully, sleep well not too little or too much, and abstain from substances that can be addictive or harmful, such as alcohol and coffee.

Rosita answered…

It is the advise to avoid those substances that harm our bodies. We have been blessed in knowing this for many years through our religion through Joseph Smith who received this revelation as a Law of Health in 1833. We call it the Word of Wisdom.
We do know that alcohol is a bad habit forming substance and we avoid partaking of it.
We know and you know that illegal drugs are not good for the body, mind and spirit and our pockets, so we avoid them and live happier.
Tobacco is a substance that we knew not to partake of it since 1833 and for a few years now our health department nationwide warns us of the bad ill effects of smoking.
I know the Word of Wisdom came from God to help me live healthier and happier in this earth.
You can read about it in our Doctrine and Covenants book section 89 verses 1-21.
I have never partaken of alcoholic drinks or smoking or illegal drugs, I avoid black tea that contains caffeine and I keep myself with better health through the obedience to that law.
I love for you to pray about it and find the answer to your questions from God our Father.

Levi answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a commandment from God, much like the ten commandments, given to us through the Prophet, Joseph Smith. The Word of Wisdom states that we should not partake of any harmful substance such as; alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea, and/or illegal drugs. By living the Word of Wisdom, you can have; more energy, a better mood, and a better and happier life in general. I can promise you that if you follow that Word of Wisdom, you, who ever you might be, will be able to feel of Gods love by the warm and comforting feeling in your heart.

Elizabeth answered…

The word of wisdom is just a law of health given to Joseph Smith in 1833 by God. We are told about the things that we should and shoulden't take into our bodies. The things we sould not take into our bodies are Tobacco, Coffee, Tea, Illegal drugs and Alcohol. Things we should take into our body are good things. For example breads and vegetables and fruits then the meats we can eat and other grains. So our body is a temple, a house of God a place where the Holy Spirit or the Holy Ghost which is the same thing where we want to keep our bodies clean and healthy so we are better able to feel the Spirit and to better follow the proptings of God. And when we do keep the Word of Wisdom we are blessed with better health so that we can stay fit and so that we can keep our minds healthy so we can learn better and recive knowladge that we need.

Valerie answered…

We believe that our bodies are temples and they are special gifts that our Heavenly Father has given us. The Word of Wisdom is a code of health that spells out the substances that should not be taken into our bodies. It also tells us what foods we should eat. It promises that we will be given special blessings if we keep this law of health.
I feel that I have been spiritually and temporally blesses by living this law. I am so grateful for this earth and the foods it produces. I love eating a juicy tomato fresh from the garden. There's just something about growing your own food that makes you appreciate all that our Heavenly Father has given us. I know that we will be blessed if we eat a healthy diet and take good care of our bodies.

Adam answered…

Word of Wisdom is a law of health, that all of us live by. It helps our bodies stay clean and overral its makes us healthier and happier people. We stay away from harmfull substances, such as: coffee, tea, tobacco of any kind, alcohol, and illegal drugs. All of these help us will benefit by living this commandment. We will have better health and be able to live happier lives.

Jennilyn answered…

This revelation came to Joseph Smith after he prayed and asked the Lord about the messy tobacco smoke and spit his wife had to clean up after the meetings. Gross! It means no coffee, no tea, no smokes for me. No alcohol. No wine. No beer. Drugs are not mentioned, but those are things we know are bad for all of us, except prescription medication and appropriate OTC use. Arsenic isn't mentioned, but being wise, you wouldn't ingest it, or all the other bad things available today. The great part about the Word of Wisdom are the YES things yes to grains, and fruits, and vegetables, and meat is okay- used sparingly- and fish and poultry. We are promised great blessings of knowledge and health if we obey this law. To live it fully, I know I need to eat less sugar and exercise more, so there is some guilt/motivation here for me to be better and keep trying and make fudge less often...I think it is a law of health that teaches us how we can be more receptive to the Holy Ghost, and not addicted to vices that distract us from being free. There are some big "NO's" but the personal interpretation part is pretty individual. Soda or no soda? That is your call. If you invite me over for "coffee" I'll drink hot chocolate with you!

Katina answered…

The word of Wisdom is a commandment regarding physical health. What it details is that we shouldn't use, eat or drink things that could be harmful of our bodies things like tobacco, drugs, alcohol, coffee and tea.

Eythan answered…

Joseph Smith received revelation from God with instructions on how to maintain healthy bodies and spirits. Included are commandments on certain foods, drinks, and activities that we either should or should not partake of/participate in.

Chris answered…

I am grateful for the Word of Wisdom as a commandment in our days. It protects and save us from so much trouble.

I know people that say that we have no freedom, once we don't smoke, drink alcohol or other things included. But I also know that are those that make us dependent.

I am free, because I do not need smoke or alcohol to be happy and feel included in a group, specially if I keep myself in holy places, where the Holy Ghost can be my companion.

Thomas answered…

By technical definition the Word of Wisdom is a law of health revealed by the Lord for the physical and spiritual benefit of His children. On February 27, 1833, the Lord revealed which foods are good for us to eat and which substances are not good for the human body. He also promised health, protection, knowledge, and wisdom to those who obey the Word of Wisdom.
On a practical level anything that will contribute to physical health should be done. This includes the foods we eat, the liquids we drink, exercise, proper rest, and abstaining from anything that can be physically addicting. This is a very individual law. Although there is a list of "do's" and "don'ts" this is not comprehensive. Each person should examine their own situation to determine the proper course of health. For example, if someone is allergic to a food or substance then they obviously need to abstain from it. If someone is diagnosed with diabetes, then this will further dictate what type of diet and exercise is appropriate for them. The goal is to stay in control of your body such that you have the energy and vitality to serve.
There is also a spiritual side to the law as well. When we are in control of our bodies, we can more easily feel the spirit of the Lord. If someone is more concerned about the addictive cravings of their body or their senses are dull due to substance abuse, then recognizing promptings from the Lord becomes increasingly difficult.
I have experienced the promised blessings. I have been blessed with excellent health and have been protected from harm on many occasions. I have also received plenty of Knowledge and wisdom that I otherwise may not have gained.

Samara answered…

The Word of Wisdom is the Lord’s law of health “given for a principal with a promise. . .” (D&C 89:3) inspired and given through modern revelation.

Though the particulars of this counsel for our time are given and continue to be clarified through modern revelation, the principal and blessings that the Lord has directed and outlined for what should or should not be taken into the body is documented in the Bible from Adam and through prophets of each time period since.

Genesis 2:16-17 reads, “And the Lord God commanded them, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

It is called the Word of Wisdom because that is how the Lord refers to it in modern revelation. Among many blessing He delineates, the Lord promises us, “And all saints who do remember to keep and do these sayings, . . shall find great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures,” (D&C 89:18-19) As in Adam’s day, adherence to the Lord’s law of health promises strength to the body and clarity of mind.

As there are many theories that seem to change so frequently as to what is best for the health and comfort of the body, I have been so grateful to compare modern discoveries with the wisdom of the Lord. Our family has received many blessings and has felt a greater ability to hear the Lord’s guidance in our life as we have better strived to keep this commandment.

Will answered…

Our body is a precious gift from God. To help keep our bodies and our minds healthy and strong, God gave a law of health to Joseph Smith in 1833. This law is known as the Word of Wisdom Doctrine and Covenants 89:1-21.
In addition to emphasizing the benefits of proper eating and physical and spiritual health, God has spoken against the use of:
Tobacco.
Alcohol.
Coffee and tea.
Illegal drugs.
God promises great physical and spiritual blessings to those who follow the Word of Wisdom. Today, the scientific community promotes some of the same principles that a loving God gave to Joseph Smith

Mieke answered…

The Word of Wisdom is, at its most basic, a health code. It is meant to be a guideline for how to use the resources that the earth has given us for food and medicine, working in harmony with our bodies, the people around us, and our planet as a result, harmful and addictive substances alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs are forbidden. Substances that alter our natural body-clocks like coffee, tea, and other things used to wake us up or put us to sleep are not encouraged either. Addiction is a difficult thing to overcome, but with the Lord's help it can be done.

Heather answered…

The Word of Wisdom is God's way of preparing us for the harmful things in the world. He provided a plan for us to use the good things of the world and to avoid the harmful things early on. He does not want us to be addicted and controlled by any substances. His plan helps us to be in control of our own bodies. The Word of Wisdom is a plan of moderation and self control. The blessings that come from living this wisdom are amazing.

Erin answered…

I really love the Word of Wisdom. Most people have heard that Mormons don't drink alcohol. We do not drink coffee or tea either. The Word of Wisdom also prohibits the use of drugs, including tobacco. It also tells us that bread and grains are the staff of life, that animals are for the use of man, and to eat fruit and vegetables that are in season. The Lord also promises health, protection, knowledge and wisdom to those who obey this law. I know that the Word of Wisdom is a commandment and a blessing from our loving Heavenly Fathers. Our bodies are a great gift from him & through the Word of Wisdom he has told us how to care for them. Notice that the revelation was given over 100 years before scientist discovered the harmful effects of tobacco! Moreover, can the Spirit of God dwell with a person who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol. I don't see how it can because the Lord "does not dwell in unholy temples" Helaman 424. The temporal promise for obeying the Word of Wisdom is They “shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones … they shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.” D&C 8918, 20. The spiritual promise “All saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, … shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures.” D&C 8918, 19

The Word of Wisdom outlines guidelines for health. It talks about eating healthy foods and avoiding harmful substances. To me, the Word of Wisdom is a guideline that gives me direction in making good choices about my health.

Ryan answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a guide to having a healthy body and spirit. Joseph Smith received direction from God about a law of health for the members of the church. We believe that our bodies are gifts from our Heavenly Father, and that taking care of our bodies is another way we can show our love and gratitude to Him. Through the prophet Joseph Smith, we learn that we should avoid alchohol, tobacco, coffee and tea, drugs, and other harmful substances that could hurt our body. The Word of Wisdom also counsels us to eat grains, vegetables and fruits, and meats in good portions. We believe that our bodies are very special because they are the house for our spirits. If we keep our bodies clean and healthy, our outlook on life will be happier because we are keeping God's commandments.

Deryn answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a health law that Mormons live by. The law is found in the Doctrine and Covenants Section 89. Most Mormons will tell you that this law is abstaining from alcohol, tobacco, tea and coffee. It goes far deeper than that. It also says that we should eat meat sparingly, eats vegetables and fruits in the seasons they are intended for. This can also be extended to going to bed early and arising early, excersising and doing anything to keep your body and mind in shape. We are promised if we abide by this law, we will have health in our navels and marrow in our bones, run and not be weary and walk and not faint.

Dennis answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a commandment revealed by God to Joseph Smith to help God's Children eat healthy and live happy lives.

Jared answered…

Its Gods guidence given to man to help us be physically and mentally elite, living by the standards in the word of wisdom life is longer stronger and filled with greater enjoyment, it focuses on the physical, think of it this way - if you built a really nice looking car, you would expect the interior to reflect in the exterior, vise versa.

So when we increase our physical capacity, the quality of our spirits which dwells within us rockets in a positive direction.

Andrew answered…

The Word of Wisdom began as a revelation given to the prophet Joseph Smith (See Doctrine and Covenants, Section 89). This revelation contained a revolutionary (for the time) health code directed to all the members of the church-- and to all the world. It gives specific instruction pertaining to diet and use of substances such as tobacco, alcohol, etc. Modern prophets have said that, specifically, members of the church need to abstain entirely from coffee, tea, tobacco in all forms, alcoholic drinks, and illegal drugs-- prescription and over-the-counter drugs are not to be abused, either. The Lord promises that those who live the Word of Wisdom will be blessed with health, energy, and sensitivity to the promptings of the Holy Ghost. In addition, adherence to the Word of Wisdom is a requirement for entrance into Mormon temples.

Scientific studies in recent decades have verified the health benefits of living by the Word of Wisdom-- many hours of research and tax dollars have established what was already known to the prophet of the Lord nearly 200 years ago.

Tucker answered…

the word of wisdom is simply a law of health givin to us from god through the prophet joseph smith. the word of wisdom tells us what we should and should not partake into our bodies. we are taught that alcohal, tabacco, illeagel drugs, coffee and tea, should not be consumed but that wholesome herbs and wheats and all fruits are healthy.

Callie answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a simple principle Latter-day Saints believe in- We believe in taking care of our bodies! Healthy bodies and clean minds can lead to well-being, strength to succeed and self discipline in forming positive habits. Many of the principles of the Word of Wisdom taught in Doctrine and Covenants Section 88, have been found by the medical profession to be accurate as well. When we eat natural foods, in their seasons, and avoid those things that are harmful to our bodies, we can know that we have done our best to care for the bodies which have been provided for us.

Jane answered…

It is our code of health that teaches us to refrain from substances that are harmful to our bodies and spirit. It also teaches us to eat properly, exercise regularly and get enough rest. Our bodies are our temples and need to be taken care of. By following the Word of Wisdom, we are promised that we will "run and not be weary and walk and not faint." I know that because I follow the Word of Wisdom, my body was better able to cope with the side affects of chemotherapy.

Jennifer answered…

The Word of Wisdom was revealed to Joseph Smith in the 1800's. It consists mainly of counsel from the Lord to refrain from addictive substances such as alcohol, drugs, tobacco, coffee, and tea. It also counsels us to eat grains, vegetables, meat, and other healthy foods. It counsels us to get sufficient rest at night so that we may have strength during the day. It is basically the Lord's guidebook for healthy living. Now, after more than 100 years have passed, this revelation, the Word of Wisdom, is proving through scientifc means to be a truly healthy lifestyle.

Austin answered…

The Word of Wisdom is a simple concept... as Mormons we abstain from consuming alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea and illegal drugs. Fortunately for me this was easy to adjust to when I began investigating the church since I was never really a drinker or a smoker.

The Word of Wisdom was revealed to Joseph Smith in 1833... almost two centuries later science has proven just how harmful these substances can be to our bodies. God promises blessings of health and wellness if we make the simple choice to avoid those things that we know can do us harm.

I know of the truth of this principle as I see the effects of drugs and alcohol in my job every night. I see many lives ruined, and often times cut short, because of these substances and the choices people make to consume them.

Victor answered…

The Word of Wisdom is Prophesy the our Prophet Joseph Smith revealed in 1833 that Mormons should not drink coffee, tea or use tobacco products. For me its personal. When I was inactive, I smoked two packs a day, drank so much that I disliked hearing the word alcoholic, and live off coffee the rest of the day. On Mother's Day 2000, the missionaries came by and ask if the the could take my cigarettes, rum and coffee. With the Lords help. and ONLY with the Lords help, I forsaked all.

Allison answered…

The word of wisdom is a health code. Before the dangers of things such as tobacco and alcohol were known the Lord told his prophet, through revelation that these things are not for our bodies. You can find the word of wisdom in the Doctrine Covenants (a scripture of modern day revelation) section 89.
