Attack the problem, not the person
Attack the problem, not the person

When a child makes a mistake, parents should address the mistake without condemning the child. You can talk with family members about inappropriate behaviour without making them feel that they are bad people.

Here are some suggestions for talking about mistakes:

  • Focus on the behaviour, not the person. Think about the words you use. Do they condemn the person or the behaviour?
  • Control your tone of voice. An angry voice can make a small problem bigger. A gentle tone promotes peace and builds trust.
