Turn off the TV and the computer

The television and the computer can drain the family of valuable time together. A recent study showed that parents spend about three hours each day watching TV with their children, but less than thirty minutes with them in other activities. This does not include time that children sit in front of the TV alone while parents are doing something else.

Although some programming can be entertaining and educational, prolonged hours spent watching TV rob families of more productive time together.

Here are some ideas to consider:

  • Establish family rules regarding TV viewing and computer use. Agree on reasonable time limits.
  • Carefully select TV programs that you feel would benefit your family.
  • Provide enjoyable family activities to replace excessive TV viewing and computer use.
