Spouses who communicate with each other effectively can have a great influence on family happiness.

If any of the following statements apply to you and your spouse, there may be a need to improve your communication:

  • You look for double meanings in your spouse’s comments.
  • You both complain of being misunderstood.
  • You have difficulty expressing your feelings.
  • You avoid eye contact with your spouse.
  • You have difficulty finding something to talk about with your spouse.
  • Your conversations end in arguments.
These ideas can help you improve communication:
  • Test your ability to communicate by having two one-hour talks per week without interruptions.
  • Avoid accusations or defensive attitudes.
  • Allow each other equal opportunities to express thoughts and feelings.
  • Don’t interrupt when your spouse is speaking.
  • Be understanding and sympathetic.
You may have other ideas to add to this list. The important thing to realie is that communication improves only when people desire to improve it.
