Talk about your situation
Talk about your situation

Divorce or the death of a parent frequently leaves children with feelings of anger, guilt, and bewilderment. Talking with someone who loves them can help them heal the hurt.

Here are some tips for talking to your children about what is happening in their lives:

  • Talk to your children, not at them.
  • Look into your child’s eyes as you listen.
  • Give hugs, smiles, and frequent expressions of appreciation.
  • Say “I love you” often.
  • Reassure your children repeatedly that they were not the cause of the separation.
  • Don’t say anything about your former spouse that would make your child feel he or she is not a good person. Your children need to know that they are the offspring of two good people.
Remember, you may need a listening ear yourself. Don’t hesitate to find someone who can help you heal too.
