What rules do members of the Church follow?
At baptism, Church members promise to keep God’s commandments and follow the Savior’s example as closely as they can.
As their basic perspective on living a Christian life, Church members try to remember that Jesus said: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matthew 22:37–40).
In living these two “great commandments,” the “spirit of the law” is as important, sometimes more important, than the “letter of the law.” This is a basic attitude in Christ’s teachings. Obedience is the reflection of an inward desire to follow one’s conscience and live a better life.
