About Me

I grew up in Salt Lake and Graduated in Broadcast Journalism from BYU. I have been married for three years, but I don't have any kids yet. We just bought our first house and we are loving our neighborhood. I love to travel and have been to over 30 countries. I am trying to get better at photography and I love to play sports. My favorites are hiking, skiing, volleyball and tennis.

Why I am a Mormon

Growing up, my family was Mormon and we went to church regularly. For the most part I believed in the church, but during my teens there were times when I questioned if it was really true.

At first I took a logical view of the gospel. I thought that religion as a whole was good for society and it made people happy to believe there was something bigger and better out there guiding us. Then I thought if there was a true church it had to be the Mormon Church for two main reasons.

The first being the Book of Mormon. I couldn't explain how such a book with so many great teachings could have come about except from God. The Book of Mormon has geography, Chiasmus an Ancient form of poetry, and many details that Joseph Smith or anyone at the time period in America would not have known. Then I could not deny the way I felt when I read it. The Holy Ghost has confirmed to me time and time again that The Book of Mormon is true and is a record of the dealings of the ancient inhabitants of the Americas with God. It teaches so many truths and explains many things that I had questioned in the Bible.

The second main reason that I am a Mormon is that I believe we have the true authority from God, the same authority from the Ancient days of Moses and other prophets. It is the only church that has a prophet at its head to direct and receive revelation for its members. This prophet can receive revelation from God and I have a testimony of that because when I have followed the counsel of our prophet I have been helped in my life. Our prophet warned us to get out of debt before the recession and helps us to know how to deal with problems in my marriage or family.

I know this church is true and I am so blessed to be a member of it.

Personal Stories

What has helped develop greater harmony in your home?

It's interesting because sometimes when I am having a problem, or I feel stressed out about something, or if something comes up between my husband and me I often try to think about that specific problem. I hash it out in my mind and try to think of solutions and I think can be somewhat beneficial, but the best results come from turning to the scriptures or talks by leaders.

One of the leaders of our church, Boyd K. Packer said in a talk called, “Washed Clean,” in the Ensign Magazine in April 1997, "I have long believed that the study of the doctrines of the gospel will improve behavior quicker than talking about behavior will improve behavior."

I really believe this to be true. If we have the spirit with us our behavior will be corrected almost automatically. By studying the words of Christ we become more Christ-like in our behavior.

How has the Holy Ghost helped you?

The Holy Ghost has helped me in many ways, from promptings to keep me from danger to helping me decide what to do. I remember a distinct time where the Holy Ghost helped me. I was working at a job with late hours and I was heading home at about 12:30pm and I realized that I was out of gas. I was in a fairly bad area of the city, but I needed gas before I got on the freeway so I pulled into a gas station. I stepped out of the car and went to reach for the gas pump when I got a strong impression to get back in the car. I thought it was weird, but followed the impression and got back in the car. I locked the doors and right after a very scary looking guy walked around the back of my car. I then pretended to be on the phone and he walked away. I know the Holy Ghost is real and he guides us and directs us in our lives.

How I live my faith

As a member of the Mormon faith I do a lot of things daily to strengthen my relationship with my Heavenly Father and strive to be more Christ-like. I try to pray and read scriptures every day and look for opportunities to help others around me. I go to church for three hours every Sunday. This includes sacrament where we have members of the congregation speak and we take the sacrament, then we have an hour of scripture study, then another hour where the men and women separate and are taught lessons specific to improving our lives and families. I am an adviser for the girls in my church ages 16-18. I teach them a lesson every Sunday and we do an activity once a week to help them improve themselves. This could be service, exercise, or developing a talent. I love working with the youth, its amazing their level of understanding and the examples they are to me.

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

We believe that the family unit is very important and that marriage and families are eternal and do not end with death. We believe men and women each have divine characteristics that together make the best parenting team. We believe that homosexuality is not genetic but is environmental. We see it as something that happens, but something that can be overcome. We all have challenges or inclinations to do certain things. Some people are more prone to drink alcohol and others are tempted to have an affair. We see homosexuality as a temptation that can be resisted and not acted upon.

The church has a strong belief that marriage is between a man and a woman and that sexual relations should only happen in marriage. Some homosexuals may feel it is too much to ask to have them remain chaste, but any member of the church that is not married is commanded not to have sexual relations as well. There are people in the church who have been single their whole lives and die single, never having broken that commandment. We expect this of homosexuals as well.

I do not look down on homosexuals and I don't see them as bad people. We all have things we are dealing with and things we need to overcome.

I have a testimony of the "The Family: A Proclamation to the World." It is scripture because it is the word of God coming to us through an inspired Prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley, prior President of the Church, and living Apostles. It clearly states, “We believe that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God." As long as a person abstains from homosexual relations and cultivates wholesome thoughts, they worthy before God. The Church does not and will not ever condone "gay bashing." I see same-sex attraction as a special challenge to overcome in this life, and not a curse. God loves all of his children unconditionally, but that does not mean that He condones sexual relations outside the bounds of a legal marriage between a man and a woman. I bear my witness that the Atonement made by Jesus Christ is not only has the power to save us from physical death and redeem us from sin, but it also the power to transform our lives. As we yield ourselves to Christ and seek to do his will, we will find the grace and healing to deal with whatever challenges or circumstances life deals to us.

What is the priesthood?

I like to approach questions by looking at the words of things

"priest" has reference to either the concept of one who leads, one who is elder, or one who is holy I like to remember that the words 'holy' and 'whole' are linked by a common ancestry. When something is 'holy' it's essentially saying that it's complete, that it's healthy..

And "-hood" makes reference to the state of being, and not just any state of being but a state of being that's worthy or correct for it's placement. That is, that it's done properly.

So one could say the priesthood is leadership or a point of reference that's completely suited to the position in which it's been placed.

Another way to look at it is to say it's God's perfect order. That is, it's God's perfect arrangement.

In our Church we often give a definition of priesthood as being "the authority to act in God's name" and that's exactly what it means to be a part of God's perfect order. If God commands something to be done by you, and you do it, then you are acting under, and with that portion of God's authority that he's permitted you to exercise within his perfect order.

Just as with any instance where someone tries to act in the name of someone else there are bound to be those who try and do so falsely. That's why God has things ordered in such a way that one can know for certain if someone has His God's authority, or not.
