Shayne: Mormon.

Hi, I'm Shayne

I love, love, love to TRAVEL! I like to organize things. I'm the Mother of 7. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am not just a soccer mom...I am a soccer/ musical theater/ baseball /band / academic team/ cross country / drum lessons/ volleyball/ etc. MOM!! I enjoy helping my 7 children realize their dreams and spending time teaching them to become productive, law-abiding, and God-fearing individuals.

I have a Master's Degree in Psychology. As a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom) I use the knowledge I have gained through my education to help run my home and enhance my parenting abilities.

In addition to being a homemaker, I enjoy: exercising (mostly jogging), blogging, organizing, traveling, reading, and scrapbooking.

I have endured several trials and tribulations in my life, and am grateful for them as they have taught me many lessons and made me a stronger person who is capable of a greater degree of empathy for others.

I have an AMAZINGLY wonderful husband who supports and encourages me in all that I do in a kind, patient, and forgiving way.

Life is GOOD! :-)

Why I am a Mormon

I was born to an unwed teenager. I was very blessed in that she made the very unselfish decision to give me up for adoption and offer me a better life than she could offer me at that time.

At three days old I was taken into the loving home of my parents. They are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I was privileged to learn the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ from the very beginning of my life...from them and from regular church attendance.

The Gospel has always been pure, simple, uncomplicated and wonderful to me. My testimony of the truthfulness of the Gospel has grown steadily over time. I have had many witnesses of it's truthfulness...the kind that bypass my 5 senses and speak directly to my soul. These witnesses have been powerful and undeniable.

Through my study of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I have been able to develop a personal relationship with my Heavenly Father and my Savior, Jesus Christ. I know that when I kneel in prayer and speak to my Heavenly Father (in the name of Jesus Christ) that He is there...He is listening to me. He knows me individually and by name. He cares for me, wants the best for me...and will see me through anything.

As I mentioned, I have seen my share of trials in this life. I was asked once by someone who had also suffered trials, "Doesn't that shake your faith...going through all of those trials?" My response was this: "My faith was only strengthened." In my darkest day I was sustained, lifted and enabled to endure by a power so much greater than myself or anything that man can offer.

One of my favorite parts of the Gospel - as established by Jesus Christ when He was on Earth and restored to the Earth in it's fulness through Joseph Smith - is that it answers all of my questions as to: Who am I? Why am I here? Where will I go after I die?

I walk around with peace in my heart knowing the answers to these important questions. I tend to have an eternal perspective on life's events...I try to consider all things in how to they fit into the eternal scheme of things...not just the here and now and the immediate. The knowledge I have gained through learning the Principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ helps me to better deal with struggles I have or barriers I come upon. Realizing that I am of infinite worth and that I have an Eternal Father in Heaven that wants me to succeed here AND in the eternities...gives me the strength I need to continue on in the struggles of life.

I know that my Savior lives and loves me. I know that he lived on this earth many many years ago and established His Gospel to help us all return to live with Him again. I know that He paid for my sins and that if I will sincerely repent and live His commandments that, through His Grace, I can be saved and live in His presence again.

Personal Stories

How has attending Church services helped you?

I feel like my spirit is fed when I attend my Church Services. It's like going to a very nice buffet (not Golden Corral...but one of those $40 a plate ones in Vegas ;-)...only my spirit or soul, instead of my physical body, can indulge in all that is available for edification. It is very satisfying and strengthens me week to week...it keeps me focused on what is important and what is good and right. It is so easy to get sidetracked by the evil influences of the world.

I recently had to miss a Sunday Service because it was cancelled due to a snow storm. I missed that spiritual buildup that I get each week and couldn't wait to get back and get a "fill-up." It truly is a blessing to be there. I also receive strength by frequently meeting with others who are also trying to live their lives based on Christ's example...we strengthen each other.

Why/How do you share the gospel with your friends?

I feel that I have been given a PRICELESS GIFT. That gift is something that I can share freely with others...I can give it away and still retain it all for myself at the same time. I feel completely selfish and unworthy of having it if I am not trying to share it with others. That is the reason that I LOVE to tell others about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

What are you doing to help strengthen your family and make it successful?

My family is of eternal importance to me. I can't live thinking that physical death would separate us forever or somehow stop us from being a family. I am so grateful for the teachings of the Church. The Gospel of Jesus Christ (as taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) shows us that Families can be together FOREVER! We believe that we don't cease to exist after we die...but we continue to live and we continue to know and love one another and be a part of our families. That provides great comfort and peace for me.

My husband and I are raising a large family. Since we believe that each of our children is also a Child of God that we have been given the privilege and duty of teaching here on Earth, we take our roles very seriously. The programs of the church are a GREAT strength to us and a tool that we use to make us better parents as we strive to help our children grow and develop.

Here are a few things, as taught by the Church, that we are using as we raise our children to help them make good choices in their life that will strengthen them and, at the same time, our entire family:

1. Reading the Scriptures (both the Bible and the Book of Mormon) with them at home. During school we are all up at 6am to read together before everyone leaves for school and work. (Ok...we are not perfect...we miss sometimes...but we really try!). This gives us a great basis to start the day.

2. Our high school students then attend "Early Morning Seminary" before they go to school. They are able to start each school day with a boost of "spiritual-ness." I feel like this is an immunization shot to help them stay strong and try to stay close to God instead of being drawn into the various and scary influences they face each day at that crazy place we call "High School." I attended Seminary as a teenager and learned a lot of what I know now about the Gospel during those 4 years. It is a great program and my three girls that currently attend Seminary seem to really appreciate it.

3. Pray Together. We pray together as a family each morning and each night (again...not perfect...but we get it done most of the time). We want our children to be sure they know that there is a Higher Power to whom they can turn with WHATEVER issue they may face in life. They are NEVER alone. They know that they can pray where ever they are and whenever they want. We also encourage them to have a personal prayer at least in the morning and at night and more frequently as needed. I believe that this strengthens them tremendously...it certainly does strengthen me. I need a LOT of help. :-)

4. Attend Sunday Church Meetings Regularly. I believe that this simple weekly event is a HUGE factor in keeping our family strong.

5. Family Home Evening. This is an inspired program that is a great strength to our family. We are encouraged (by Church leaders) to keep Monday nights sacred...it is FAMILY NIGHT. We try not to have any other activities...it is reserved for us to be together as a family. Sometimes we will have a lesson about a Gospel Principle. Sometimes we will play games or go to the park together. Sometimes we run off to Dairy Queen and indulge in lewd amounts of ice cream and chocolate! Sometimes we will have a family meeting and talk about things that need to be discussed or need to be fixed about the way we are interacting with each other. But whatever we do, we do it together. This keeps our family close.

We are not a perfect family and I don't want to make it sound like we think that we are. We have the same struggles all families have...we have fights and selfishness that emerge. We get on each other's nerves or do things that are inconsiderate. But we feel that we have the tools to make these things better. We feel that the programs of the church, based on the Principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, are what give us hope as we battle each of the negative influences that can try and creep into a home. We are ever vigilant in our battle to be "In the World but not OF the World." We feel that we can ultimately win the battle against "The Evil One," who would try to tear us apart and sabotage us with his evil ideas...in his effort to thwart the plan of God. This hope keeps us going...knowing that we have One that is MUCH more powerful than the Devil. Our Savior is there to aid us in this battle of good and evil...and He will succeed. We just have to keep our armor on (all of these things that we do to strengthen us) and be strong "soldiers" for good. :-)

How I live my faith

I live my faith by attending church weekly (or more often for activities), reading the scriptures daily, and maintaining my relationship with my Father in Heaven through frequent prayer. I strive to be an example of a "believer." In order to do that I make efforts to improve myself each day and try to become more like my Savior, Jesus Christ. My hope/goal would be that through my actions it would be obvious to others that I am a Christian and am trying to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints you have many opportunities to serve others. I love this about the Church! As we serve one another we get to know each other really well...we become a "ward family." You definitely learn to love those that you serve.

No one in the church is paid for their service. We have what is called a "lay ministry." Even the Bishops of congregations serve without pay...they typically will have full time occupations in addition to the time they spend serving at church. We feel that we are richly blessed in our lives when we serve this way and I have definitely seen that in my life.

In my many years in the church, I have had the opportunity to serve in many capacities. I have: taught children, taught youth, taught adults, created weekly bulletins for Sunday Service, created quarterly newsletters, organized and put on many large activities, given talks to large congregations, served in multiple leadership positions (e.g. Counselor in a Presidency, Cub Scout Den Leader - Pine Wood Derbys, woot woot!), taught leadership to youth and adults, done missionary work, organized a week-long summer camp for 120 girls, and the list goes on.

My current responsibility is working with the girls ages 12 to 18. I am the President in our local congregation of this group - it's called being the "Young Women's President". I work with 6 other fantastic women in the presidency and our main goal is to help the girls realize that they are daughters of God...that they are of infinite worth and that He is there to help them no matter what comes in their lives. We do this by teaching the girls at Sunday Meetings and also providing weekly activities (called "Mutual"). We also help provide the girls with opportunities to provide service to the community. I currently have 3 of my own daughters in the program (soon to be 4) and I have seen the way the program helps them feel confident in themselves and in their relationship with their Heavenly Father. It is a huge help to my husband and I as we strive to raise all of our children to walk in the ways the Lord would want and to make wise decisions in life that will ultimately make them happy and not miserable. There is a similar program in the church for the young men ages 12-18 in which they are heavily involved in the Scouting program.

In addition to this I always serve as a "Visiting Teacher." This means that another female at church and I are assigned to watch over a few other ladies in our local congregation. We visit them frequently or check in with them to make sure they are ok. If they are in need of help in any way, we provide that help or find someone at church that can help them. I too am assigned Visiting Teachers who do the same for me. It's a beautiful program and I have made life-long friends this way.

I love how well organized the Church is! The programs are the exact same no matter where you go in the world. I have lived in several states and attended many different wards...and no matter where I go they are teaching the exact same principles (they even teach the same lesson across the world on a given Sunday)...and I know, no matter where I go, I will immediately find a new ward family and the exact same structure (programs, leaders, lessons) that I left in my last local congregation (ward). It's comforting to have that consistency in the Church.
