About Me

I'm a Computer Engineer who strangely enough works almost exclusively with software! I was recently married in the temple to my beautiful wife, and I love my life with her. We look forward to the day that our family will grow and we can become parents. I love camping and hiking and other outdoor activities. I also like music, especially singing and choral music. I'm interested in history and I try to be involved in local, state, and national politics in my spare time.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the Church and have been a member all of my life. When I was young I simply accepted the teachings of the church because that was what my parent's believed and because that is what I was taught every week in church. As I grew older, and started to face challenges and trials in life, I had to start developing my own faith in Jesus Christ. My personal testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints grew gradually. I learned that when I read the scriptures regularly and pondered on their teachings I was happier. When I accompanied my studying with prayer I could feel God's influence directing me and guiding me through my trials. I'm a Mormon now because I know that the teachings of this church are true. I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior and that through His atonement I can not only be cleansed from my sins and flaws but that I can improve my relationship with my wife, my family, my friends and my work associates. I know that God has called prophets again in our day and that as we follow their council we will be blessed.

Personal Stories

How has the Book of Mormon brought you closer to God?

Because I was born into the church, I have been exposed to the Book of Mormon since I was very young. Even though I've been reading the Book of Mormon since I was young, I remember the book taking on a special significance during my first year of college. One of my teachers told me that if I would commit to reading the Book of Mormon daily and seriously studying it, that I would begin to feel the power of God in my life. I decided to take that challenge and during that entire semester I read and studied the Book of Mormon every day for half-an-hour. I tried to write down things that I learned as I was reading in a journal and to pray while I studied. It was amazing to see how fast I began to feel closer to God. I found myself acting with more kindness toward my family and friends, I started to be able to focus better on my schooling. I also found that as I read the stories in the Book of Mormon that I learned how God would want me to act in everyday situations. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. The amazing thing about the Book of Mormon is that anyone that seriously reads it with a desire to know if it is from God and then simply asks God in prayer about its truthfulness will also know that it is the word of God.

How I live my faith

I'm a Mormon in my daily life as well as in my activity in official church activities. My wife and I try to study the scriptures every morning before I go to work and try to have family prayer twice a day. We're not perfect but we know that we're blessed for our efforts. We also try to have a lesson and a short activity every Monday evening for "Family Home Evening." We like discussing scripture stories together and discussing the teachings of modern prophets. In the official church organization I help visit a few families every month. I go with another brother and we share a message and try to be of service to the families that we're assigned to. I've also been able to serve a mission for the church and spent two years in the Philippines speaking Tagalog and teaching the people about Jesus Christ's atonement and the plan of salvation.

Does The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints endorse political parties?

The Mormon Church does not endorse political parties or candidates for public office. It does, however, encourage its members to be active participants in government and in political issues. We believe in honoring the laws of the land and we believe that we should be able to practice our religion without breaking those laws. We also believe that all other people, from whatever religious persuasion, should also have the right to worship however they desire. Occasionally the church will speak about issues that seem political but these issues always align with truths that have been revealed to modern prophets.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has no political affiliation, and remains neutral on political activity. As declared by the Church, its purpose is to invite others to come unto Christ, not to elect politicians, and this applies to all the nations were the Church is established. In the same way, the Church does not endorse nor promote political parties, and its members are not directed to vote for specific candidates. Elected officials who are also members of the Church, does not represent the Church's position.

However, the Church does encourages us, members of the Church, to play a responsible role as citizens of the nations, to be informed, and to exercise our right to vote. Also, we are expected to respect others who think different and to participate in dialogue and exchange of ideas to reach consensus.

In the Church, we learn since we are young to be responsible and to seek to serve our communities and families. The Church's programs aims to strength our capacity and willingness to serve others. In this same context, we support leaders and programs which purposes are to make a better world. I personally support leaders who inspire those principles, and pray that whoever is elected would make wise decisions for the welfare of our nations and those of others. To obey, honor, and sustain the law of our country is an important responsibility of every member of our church.

Why did your church previously practice plural marriage (polygamy)?

Many of the prophets of the old testament practiced plural marriage under Gods direction; among them Abraham, Issac, Jacob, David and Solomon. It is an ancient practice. I know that God only allows it's use under his authorization. There have been instances, one in the Book of Mormon to be exact (Jacob 2:27-30) where God has condemned the practice. Given the fact that God has, throughout history, alternately prescribed and condemned the practice I believe that it is a situational doctrine where God, having all of the information, and us not having it all, reserves the right to make a judgment call, taking all things into consideration, and either prescribes it or ends its use, basing his decision on the needs of the moment and all other factors involved. So the answer to this question is that the church practiced polygamy because God prescribed it at that time, and we don't anymore because God revealed that the practice was to be discontinued. When plural marriage was practiced only a handful of men were selected by God to participate. It was, by far, not practiced by all men or women in the church. The ones who participated were obeying a commandment from God, not necessarily seeking out the practice.
