Why I am a Mormon

I grew up belonging to a different religion but always felt something was missing. I had different friends growing up that were Mormon and I was really drawn to their focus on the family and felt something special when I was in their homes. I eventually joined the church at the age of 19 because of a great group of friends. I finally found everything I was looking for in a church. I have had so many experiences in the last 30 years as a member that have solidified my testimony that this is the true church. I am so grateful for those friends who had a part in my conversion. I feel so blessed!

How has the Holy Ghost helped you?

The Holy Ghost has helped me when making big decisions in my life. I have relied on the Spirit more times than I can count. And every time I follow the promptings I receive the choice has always proven to be the correct one. The Holy Ghost confirmed to me that my husband would be the best choice for me. And 29 years later it still holds true. The Holy Ghost has warned me of danger and things to avoid. I pray every day for guidance in different situations and when I receive and answer and then see it come true, it still amazes me. I don't know how people can travel through life without the Holy Ghost helping them to make the correct choices. I know when I follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost I will have greater happiness, and it's true! I feel so blessed to have the Spirit as my constant companion and I thank my Heavenly Father every single day for this amazing gift.

How does making right choices help us make more right choices?

I heard a saying once that went "The choices you make dictate the live you lead". That has always stuck with me and it's very true. Two choices I've made have definitely dictated the life I now lead and the great amount of happiness I feel. The first choice was my decision to be baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I can't even begin to explain the amount of happiness, peace and joy I have in my life because I keep the commandments and I live the gospel each day. I have great peace because by making the right choices I have the greatest amount of safety and joy. And because the gospel teaches me to pray and follow the promptings I receive from the Holy Ghost, I know I'm making the correct choices. Never do I have to worry about going down the wrong road. And because I've learned from experience that this is true, it encourages me to continue making the right choices. The second choice that I made was marrying the right person in the right place. When I prayed and asked my Heavenly Father if I was marrying the right person, it was the first time I had that burning in the bosom that the scriptures speak about. And because I had such a strong answer I always knew I was with the man who would make me the happiest. And because we choose to marry in the Temple I knew I would be with him for eternity. We've been married almost 30 years now and life's up and downs have proven that I have, indeed, married the right man and I look forward to spending eternity with him. So by trial and error I have learned that when I make the right choice I have the greatest amount of happiness which has led me to continue striving to make right choices.

How I live my faith

I live my faith every day by trying to be the best person I can be and living with honesty and integrity. I set time aside every day to study the scriptures and make weekly temple attendance a must. I love the gospel and live to please my Heavenly Father and my Savior, Jesus Christ.

What do Mormons believe about the Holy Ghost? Who is the Holy Ghost?

Mormons believe the Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead. The Holy Ghost is a gift given to members after they are baptized and confirmed a member of the Church. And as we keep the commandments and live the gospel, we are promised to have the Holy Ghost as our constant companion. The Holy Ghost is the best gift I have ever received. I feel the Spirit each day and rely upon the Spirit to guide, direct and protect me. The Holy Ghost can guide you to make the correct choices in your life and can warn you of danger. It's something we strongly believe in and seek after every day.

Do Mormons practice polygamy?

No! The practice of polygamy by faithful Mormons ended September 24, 1890. Mormons today do not practice or preach or in any way condone the practice of plural marriage. If you hear or read about any group of people practicing polygamy you can be absolutely certain that they are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Any LDS church member practicing polygamy today would be immediately excommunicated from the church.

QUESTION: Why did your church previously practice plural marriage (polygamy)?

This is a good honest question that deserves an honest answer. My great-great-grandfather who joined the church in 1835 was a polygamist. If you are a Christian that believes in the Holy Bible and ancient prophets, you believe in and accept the fact that God has the right to authorize plural marriage when He sees the need, and He has the right to revoke that same commandment when He sees the need to do so. Many of the ancient prophets had plural wives such as Moses, Abraham, and Isaac. If you believe in the Holy Bible, you must accept this fact. But you also know that for most of human history God commanded men to have only one wife. The key here is to do what God commands, and don’t do what He forbids.

The period of time when Joseph Smith (1820-1844) was called of God to restore the “fullness of the gospel” to the earth, many important laws and ordinances were revealed and restored to the earth that had existed anciently. The power of the priesthood, temple ordinances, and the practice of plural marriage were part of that restoration.

But in 1890 the Lord directed the living prophet Wilford Woodruff to end the practice of Plural marriage. Since that time the Mormon Church has not authorized any such practice. This is a great example that demonstrates how important it is to follow living prophets who receive direction from the living God for our day.
