Hi, I'm Jessica Helms
I'm a lover of nature and music, a future Health Teacher. I'm Mormon.
About Me
I am a college student. I enjoy singing, gardening, spending time in nature, studying Biology, photography, laughing, and spending time with my family.
I grew up an only child with a very large extended family. My Father converted to the Church two years before I was born. He died of Renal Cell Kidney Cancer when I was 7 years old. My Mother works at a Preschool Teacher and enjoys teaching young children.
Why I am a Mormon
I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints all of my life. I choose to continue to live the gospel because it is the only thing in this life that brings me true joy. I have a testimony and a knowledge that our Heavenly Father lives. I know that when we pray, we can commune with Him and he will answer us. Even if our prayers seem small and insignificant. I know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that he sacrificed his life so that we could live eternally. I know that there is a living Prophet on the Earth today, Thomas S. Monson, who holds the authority to direct the Church. I know that he has been called by God through Revelation. I also know that this Church is led by our Savior Jesus Christ and that he loves each one of us. I know that within the sacred walls of the Holy Temples, we can be with our families for eternity. I am grateful for my testimony and the comfort and hope that it brings into my life. Whenever I have doubts I can always turn to my testimony which is founded upon Jesus Christ.
Personal Stories
Which of the Savior’s teachings have influenced you?
My favorite scripture story is found in the New Testament. It is the story of the Good Samaritan. It is asked of Christ, "What shall I do to inherit eternal life?" Christ then replies, "Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and love they neighbor as thyself". The question is then asked, "Who is my neighbor?".
Christ begins to teach this principle through a parable. A man passes along a street and is beaten and left for dead along a dusty path. Several men pass by the injured man and decide to pass on instead of offering help. It is a Samaritan who ends up taking the injured upon his animal and leaving him in an inn to heal.
I have often thought and questioned if I am like the Good Samaritan? Do I turn the other way when I see someone in need? If I do, what is stopping me? Is it pride? A lack of time? Is it embarrassment or a feeling of inadequacy? All of those issues hinder our responsibility to love our neighbor. In the world there are people of different nationalities, races, and religions. We can choose to focus on our differences or to focus on our commonalities. We are children of God. We are literally spirit brothers and sisters.
Jesus Christ has taught us to love everyone and to treat others with respect. I have a picture of the story of the Good Samaritan beside my bed. I resolve each time I see it to be the one who will stop by and administer to the injured, the feeble of heart, or the weary when everyone else passes on their way.
How I live my faith
I am a college student at a predominately Mormon campus. Here, students have the opportunity to be a part of a young single adult ward. where the leadership positions are held by Young Adults from ages 18-30.
During college, everyone is defining their character and who they ultimately want to be for the rest of their lives. It is amazing to see how much love young adults have for their Savior and how much they want to follow His example.
I choose to stay away from environments that are not clean and wholesome. If someone invites me to a party and I think the entertainment will be questionable, it is much easier for me to decline the invitation than to suffer in a place where temptation could be present. As I surround myself with wholesome entertainment, uplifting friends, and remember Jesus Christ, it is much easier for me to keep the Lord's commandments.
