Hi, I'm Trooly Harker
About Me
I grew up in a small town in southwestern Wyoming. I've lived in San Antonio, all around Chicago, near Seattle, in and near Phoenix as well as several cities in Utah. I'm a mother of two sons who keep me very busy, and I have a terrific husband who works hard to provide for us. Outside of caring for the family and being a full-time student in college, I spend my time volunteering, exercising, playing with my friends, and serving in the church.
Why I am a Mormon
Even though my family has been Mormon for many generations, I didn't grow up in a home where the religion was practiced. I have enjoyed attending worship services of many faiths and feel great respect for all churches that encourage their followers to be better people. One of the things I love about Momonism is that we believe in ALL truth and that we can find out the truth for ourselves. I am a Mormon because I have read and studied and prayed to know if the doctrines of the church are true. Too many times to count, I have felt the truthfulness of the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I want to belong to a church that understands the true nature of God and my relationship to Him. I believe that God is the father of my spirit; I am His daughter. He loves me and cares about anything that is important to me. He wants me to return home to Him when my time on Earth is over, and He has not left me alone to wander here. When I pray to Him, He hears my prayers and answers me. I am not the type of person to take what I hear at face value, so I have studied and prayed about a LOT of things.
At a relatively young age, I decided that I could not belong to a church that was founded on lies and deception, and I needed to know if the claims that Joseph Smith made were true. When I prayed to know if Joseph Smith really saw what he said he saw, the doubt that troubled me was replaced by a sweet peace which left me certain that like, Noah, Abraham, Moses and others, Joseph Smith was also a prophet of God.
As I have felt a need to know for myself if various principles and doctrines are true, I have studied, prayed, and even fasted to know the truth. I do know for myself that Jesus Christ is my personal Savior and Redeemer. He has established a pattern for revealing His will to us and, just like in ancient times, He has continued that pattern today in organizing His church with prophets, apostles and others to assist us in coming unto Him.
Personal Stories
How can your talents and gifts bless others?
I love the parable of the talents in the New Testament. It reminds me that God expects me to use all that He has given me to further His purposes and that, in wisdom, He doesn't give more than I can manage.
What I find amazing, is that He will use me to touch someone else, and there is no better feeling than knowing that something I said or did brightened someone's life, even if only for a moment.
How has the Book of Mormon brought you closer to God?
The clarity of teaching in The Book of Mormon helps me to understand how I am saved by the grace of Jesus Christ, what to expect after this life, how essential it is to pray continually, how faith and trust in God support me through difficulty, how I can know the truth, why God allows the innocent to suffer, how to obtain forgiveness, and more!
Learning of these and other things increases my understanding of my relationship with God. Seeing how He loves the individuals written about in these pages, makes me see His love for me. In addition, the feelings I have received after praying to know if The Book of Mormon is true have also helped me to feel closer to God.
How has attending Church services helped you?
It seems that almost every week, I head off for church with my resources depleted; beaten down by another long week. Usually before we are even mid-way into the meetings, I feel a lifting of my spirits, and before I can get out the door, a smile is plastered to my face, reflecting the regained peace and joy I need to get me through the next seven days.
How I live my faith
There is no part of my life that my faith does not touch. In addition to participating in various assignments at church, our family reads from the scriptures and prays together every day. My husband and I read a few verses and pray together after we put the kids to bed, and I take time each morning after getting the family out the door to do some personal scripture study and prayer. We have a weekly Family Home Evening where we sing, pray, read scriptures and share a message on topics we feel our family needs to hear and/or live more fully.
We are the typical flawed family with kids fighting, parents yelling, and everyone sometimes doing things that require an "I'm sorry." I see religion in my life as a tool to help get me through the everyday challenges. I have seen how much happier family life is when we ask God to help us treat each other the way His Son asked us to when He said "Love one another."
