Hi, I'm Virginia
I am trying to raise five good sons in this world. I am a Mormon.
About Me
The first thing I tell people is that I am a mom. When I was a little girl, teachers would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I would always say, "a mom". I have six children. All are boys. One died when he was a baby, but I always count him. I always remember him.
I enjoy running, especially marathons and I have placed in the top 5 percentile of the races many times, including the Boston Marathon. Maybe I enjoy them because they parallel my real life. I have had hardships, ups and downs, highs and lows - and I always know that there is a finish line. That's what keeps me going, in marathons and in life: the finish line. And I plan to finish well!
I have a degree in Political Science, but I could never really figure out how to get a job with it, so I am going back to college to get a certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography right now. It is a very competitive profession, but I enjoy helping people, and I hope that I can make a difference to many people. I love to work! I know it sounds crazy, but I am happiest when I am busy working hard. I love to garden, I love to cook, I love to write, I love to play the piano and I enjoy making people happy by serving them. I love my family. My family is the center of my world! My husband is not a Mormon, this has been difficult because he does not always support the way that I want to raise our son. But we try to see each others viewpoint and try to respect each others beliefs.
Why I am a Mormon
I was born in a family that was Mormon and have a long history of ancestors belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon). So, you would think that it was just a "given" that I would always be a devout Mormon. But, in my late 20's, I went through some tough trials that got me discouraged to the point that I wondered if Heavenly Father really loved me. My life before that point had been free of really tough trials, and when some really tough times finally hit, I expected to just breeze through them. Moreover, I didn't realize that trials can build character; at the time, I felt lost and forgotten.
Instead of enduring through some tough times, I decided to be inactive in my church. I would go to church, but my heart wasn't there. I kept finding myself taking one step forward and two large steps backwards! When you leave God out of the equation and try to live life without any help, it is very lonely and unhopeful. I will never forget those two years of inactivity, I still remember what it is like to give up. I remember...and that is why I would never choose to go down that path again.
After those two years, I became pregnant but lost my son right after birth. There were many prayers in behalf of me and my family.
That's when I began to remember what I had forgotten. The Savior loved me all the time and was waiting for me to just ask Him for help. There is a scripture that says, "ask, and it shall be given unto you, knock and you shall receive." I asked. I knocked, and the door was opened. I suddenly found hope, my eyes were opened and I realized that I needed to rally my family and myself back into the gospel of Jesus Christ. Although my husband was never a member of my church to begin with, he supported me in going back to church and being a devout, faithful member. He knew that it was the way to strengthen our family.
How I live my faith
You can find me in the primary room at church. That's where all the children meet while their parents go to Sunday School. I help teach and take care of all the children that come to church, ages 18 months to 12 years-old. From the outside, you might think that this would be a tedious job...working with children while all the other adults get to go to classes to learn, while I am stuck with the kids, especially free of charge. But, it is just the opposite! Every week, I find myself happy as I listen to children sing, hearing a child give a talk about what they are learning about Jesus Christ, or listening to curious children raising their hands to answer a simple question about the scriptures or faith or their Heavenly Father.
I am also a visiting teacher. Each woman that is an active member of our church is given a few names of other women in our church (active or inactive) to look after and make sure that their needs are attended to. This means that I visit these two women at least once a month. I either share a thought with them, talk, laugh, listen and take care of them. Today I called one of these ladies because she just had some surgery. If I feel that one of these women needs help, or a listening ear, I will always be there for them. This is a way of making sure that everyone is watched over. Someone at my church visits and takes care of me, whenever I am in need. It is like a linking chain...no one is forgotten.
