Why I am a Mormon

"Men are that they might have joy" (2 Nephi 2:25) I am happiest when I live gospel principles and follow the commandments of God. I am a Mormon because serving Jesus Christ and following his teachings has brought me more happiness than any other thing or person on the Earth.

How has the Book of Mormon brought you closer to God?

When I was twelve years old I wanted to read the Book of Mormon for the first time all the way through by myself before my thirteenth birthday. For the first few months I did a great job getting through it but I soon forgot about my goal and stopped reading. However, 3 days before my 13th birthday I remembered my goal and began reading the Book of Mormon again. I was determined to finish it in time! Over the next three days I read the Book of Mormon from front cover to back cover. It was a difficult undertaking especially for someone who had never read that much before. But every moment I spent reading the Book of Mormon was worth it. On my 13th birthday I finished the Book of Mormon for the first time and decided to follow the promise in the last chapter of the Book of Moroni verses 4-5 to pray to God and ask if the Book of Mormon was true. I received an answer that day and I knew that the Book of Mormon and all of its teachings were true! Since my 13th birthday I have read the Book of Mormon many times and each time I am reminded of its truthfulness and the love that God has for me and each of His children.

How I live my faith

I live my faith each day by sharing it with others through word and deed. A simple smile, a note, a word of encouragement or anything that would lift someone else are examples of how I live my faith.

Why are Mormons asked to donate 10% of their income to their Church?

Tithing is a commandment of God and the resources generated from tithing are used to build the church, temporally and spiritually. Tithing funds are used temporally to build chapels and temples, support those in need and more. But the real blessing of tithing is that it spiritually builds the testimony and character of members of the church. As I pay tithing each week, I can feel the power of God in my life. Paying tithing is one of the ways I let Heavenly Father know that I love him and it is a small way of giving back some of the great blessings that he has given me. During times of financial difficulty it can be difficult to pay tithing, but the outpouring of the love and blessings of God make it worth every penny. It truly is a blessing and an opportunity to pay tithing! Show more Show less

Latter Day Saints(Mormons) donate 10% of their income to the church because the Lord has commanded us too! In Proverbs 3:9 it says, "Honour the Lord with substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase." This is talking about tithing, tithing literally means one-tenth, which is 10%. So when the Lord commands us to donate one-tenth of our increase(income) that is what we do. If you look at Malachi 3:8-10 you will see that the Lord is asking for us to give him our tithes (10%) and in return he will open the windows of Heaven and pour out blessings, so many that we won't be able to contain them. Wouldn't you want to receive innumerable blessings for just giving Him 10% of your pay check? It seems like a pretty fair trade to me. Show more Show less

What is the priesthood?

I like to approach questions by looking at the words of things "priest" has reference to either the concept of one who leads, one who is elder, or one who is holy I like to remember that the words 'holy' and 'whole' are linked by a common ancestry. When something is 'holy' it's essentially saying that it's complete, that it's healthy.. And "-hood" makes reference to the state of being, and not just any state of being but a state of being that's worthy or correct for it's placement. That is, that it's done properly. So one could say the priesthood is leadership or a point of reference that's completely suited to the position in which it's been placed. Another way to look at it is to say it's God's perfect order. That is, it's God's perfect arrangement. In our Church we often give a definition of priesthood as being "the authority to act in God's name" and that's exactly what it means to be a part of God's perfect order. If God commands something to be done by you, and you do it, then you are acting under, and with that portion of God's authority that he's permitted you to exercise within his perfect order. Just as with any instance where someone tries to act in the name of someone else there are bound to be those who try and do so falsely. That's why God has things ordered in such a way that one can know for certain if someone has His God's authority, or not. Show more Show less
