Benjamin: Mormon.

Hi, I'm Benjamin

About Me

I was born in California and lived there for 13 years. I then moved to Colorado and lived there for 6 more years. Like most young men of my faith I then served 2 years as a missionary for the church teaching about the restored Gospel. When i returned home a bounced around for a year and a half and eventually joined the United States Air Force. I have 10 siblings and though traditionally Mormons have had big families it is more unusual today to have as many kids as my parents did. Many Mormons still show shock on their faces when i give them this information. I love to dance. Any type is good with me but my forte is break dancing. I have been doing that since I was 14. I love to camp, hike, white water, and just be adventurous. My job consists of working on computers and I enjoy the complexities and challenge of computers. I will be starting school shortly to get a BS in Computer Engineering.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I was born into it. But we are taught something very special that we share with everyone else as well. We are taught that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Christs church and that he has set it up again today just as he did in the days of the Apostles. The thing that is different about this is that after being taught this we are greatly encouraged to ask God ourselves whether or not it is all true. When I was 12 years old I acted in faith and sought help and guidance from God through the scriptures the Book of Mormon. As I sought for guidance and help He answered me through the Book of Mormon. Just like Joseph Smith, when he read James 1:5 in the Bible and recounted that this verse of scripture had more affect on him than any other scripture, I experienced the same thing with 1 Nephi 1:20 which in part reads "...And now I Nephi will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverence." This verse struck my heart. He was telling me that if I had faith in him and followed his commandments he would deliver me out of my trials and troubles. He fulfilled his promise. That was one of the first recognizable answers i received from God. Since then I have received countless witnesses of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. That it is Gods word. I don't have just one answer, I have hundreds because he continues to guide and answer my prayers. I have put his teachings to the test and I have found them true.

Why do Mormons go on missions?

Mormons go on missions to share one message God and Jesus Christ have appeared again and set up their church like it was when Christ lived on the earth. A mission is when a member of the church gives a year and a half to two years of their lives to share the message above. We have had witnesses from the Holy Spirit that these things are true and though we know not everyone will accept it we know that we must give them that opportunity.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by doing everything I can in my daily life to keep Gods commandments, be a good person, and serve others. As a member of the church I get many opportunities to serve not only in the community around me but also the members of my local congregation that we call a ward. In Corinthians 12 Paul taught about the body of Christ. He explained that each member of Christs church is part of the body. Some are ears, some are mouths, some feet, some hair. All have a responsibility and are needed. Though some have more responsibilities then others each is needed and important. If we were all the nose how would we see? If we were all the eyes how would we hear? Though these verses talk primarily about spiritual gifts we can use the same analogy in the various positions and responsibilities we perform in the church that we call callings. Each member is given a calling in church to give them a chance to fulfill the commandment to serve and love one another. Each calling is purely voluntary. A doctor by profession may be asked to serve as a Bishop or what you would call a Pastor. A plumber a few years later could be asked to take over the same responsibilities. So each member gets a chance to serve in different capacities. In my local congregation I have been asked to serve the Young Men in the congregation. They are between the age of 12 and 18. There is about 11 young men in our small congregation. I teach them about the gospel, how they are to love one another, help one another, do good to others, to pray. I teach them principles on how to become a worthy husband and father by teaching them how to respect women, girls, and children. I teach them also how to be a good citizen by participating and serving their neighbors in the community and teach them to participate to make their cities a place to live in. I teach them leadership skills by giving them experiences in which they are asked to conduct meeting, lead outings, or teach. I teach them about physical fitness and good hygiene and how making these choices reflect in their daily lives. I assist their parents in teaching them to be full functional adults who will contribute withing the societies they live in. I also give them an opportunity to have fun and goof off. I hope to influence them in their lives so that they will be able to help and bless their fellow man.
