Hi, I'm Gillian
I am a daughter of God, I am a mother, I am learning daily. I have hope for the future. It's fabulous to be alive! I'm a Mormon.
About Me
I am a mother of four, two girls and two boys. Some days are crazy, and other days are great, I guess that goes with the territory of being a mother. I studied to be a swimming instructor when we still lived in SA and had my own swim school there. Then we moved to the UK and I studied Hairdressing! So now I can give you a swimming lesson and blow dry your hair afterwards : How handy is that! I love to read, chat on the phone or in person to friends and family, make my surroundings beautiful, ride my bicycle to new and interesting places and just generally breath in the beauty and magnificence of life!
Why I am a Mormon
I was born into a member family, but that's not why I'm still a Mormon today.
I was blessed to be married for time and all eternity in the Johannesburg South Africa Temple. My husband and I have four beautiful children, and things were looking great, we were doing well...
After 9 years of marriage, my husband decided that he didn't want to be a Latter-Day Saint anymore. I was devastated! Everything I thought I had was thrown up into the air and I had to re-evaluate everything again. He kept telling me that I was deceived, and that I needed to check out more carefully the truth about this Church. That he didn't want me or our children attending anymore.
Ok, so I needed to find out for myself and for my children if what he was telling me was in fact correct. So I got reading, studying, praying, fasting, asking, cross referencing, double checking. Every single time I came back to the reality that I was in the right place, this Church is true, our leaders are called of God, my children need to be taught the gospel principles, and take part in the saving ordinances available only here. There was no other answer out there.
So I am still in the right place, I still teach my children the doctrine of Christ. We still read the scriptures, say prayers and have regular Family Home Evening and go to Church on Sunday. Sadly our marriage was not able to survive the strain of my husband's dissatisfaction.
I am grateful for the gift of the Holy Ghost, which testifies of Truth, and the ability to see a difference between true doctrine and the mistakes of well meaning people. I know that without the faith of Joseph Smith we would not have the Truth restored once more upon the earth. I know that my Redeemer lives, He will forgive me when I repent, and thanks to the Priesthood, I am able to be with my family for all time and eternity. I know that I am in the right place and that my children are too.
Personal Stories
What have you done successfully to shield your family from unwanted influences?
First and Foremost: Every family is different, so what works for us, may not work for you. And my family is still growing, so what is working now may not work a few years on.
In the beginning of our young family we had a time when all I seemed to do was watch TV, a terrible habit from my teenager years. Also we could afford a TV license, but wanted to be able to spend that money elsewhere, so we gave away our TV. We discovered that in the evenings we had time to talk together, we played games together, we read stories to each other, we went for walks. 12 years later and we still don't have a TV, and we love it that way. We aren't bombarded with the adverts, noise, channel surfing and other distracting problems that come with TV. All or our kids are avid readers, and they play outside most of the time, they use their imaginations, we do things together. I know that our family would be different if we had a TV, because of my teenage habits. But we also live in the UK, so in the Winter we watch loads of DVDs, there is a time and a season I suppose.
We also have family scripture reading every morning, that way we are all putting on the armor of God. My kids especially need this, I suppose all kids to, because they are heading out into the 'big bad world'.
I also find that there have been many concerns and problems solved during family prayers. One of the children will be praying and they pray for something that is worrying them, so now I know about it and can do something to help them. Without the chance to pray together, I am not sure I would have had the chance to hear their concerns.
I also try to be an involved mom. When the kids want to go over to a friends house, I go too, and chat with the other parents, we make our home inviting so that kids want to be at our house too.
So far these things seem to be working, I continue to pray for inspiration though because our families are continually changing.
How I live my faith
Every morning we gather in the lounge and have Family Scripture reading. We read from the Book of Mormon, and if there is time we will read an article from one of the Church's magazines. After the kids are off to school, I sit down and study the lessons that are going to be taught on Sunday, or I will study a topic that I would like to learn more about. Then my day begins.
Once a month I go out Visiting Teaching, I love to visit with the sisters that have been assigned to me. I learn lessons from the older sisters, and help the young mothers with their sometimes overwhelming tasks.
On Sunday's I oversee the lessons that are taught to the women, from age 18 up. I make sure they are prepared well and that the teachers are able to be there that week. I also make sure the hymns that are going to be sung match up with the topic of the lesson. We meet together once a month as a presidency to coordinate our efforts, so that we can serve the ladies in our ward who might need help.
