Shawn: Mormon.

Hi, I'm Shawn

I'm a Mormon and I love it!

About Me

I grew up roaming the rocky mountains and playing guitar in local bands. I still love doing both! Now I do those things with my beautiful wife. We especially love hiking, camping, rock climbing, etc. when we get around to it. I have two awesome sons. We have tons of fun playing around with legos and watching Curious George movies. I graduated in Biology and Business Management and will finish a Master's degree very soon, can't wait to be done!

Why I am a Mormon

My dad was not a mormon but he was baptized while in college. I grew up seeing how the gospel helped him and I learned many of those teachings that changed him. Watching that impacted my life and decision to continue to be a mormon. But when it really comes down to it, I'm a mormon because I love Jesus Christ and know he died for us so I try to do my best to follow him and I have found that being a mormon really helps me do that!

Along with that, I love the Bible and Book of Mormon and have had powerful experiences reading them and living the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A life changing event for me was serving a two year mission in the country of Chile where I dedicated all my time and talents to helping other people understand and live the gospel of Jesus Christ. The life changing part for me was watching other lives change for the better. I knew God was pleased with my life and I wanted to continue with that sort of experience for the rest of my life and have felt strongly that living the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will help me do so.

Personal Stories

Which of the Savior’s teachings have influenced you in your life?

Too many to count but one that has impacted me lately is this one: "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it." Matthew 16:25

Really God is the owner of all and the only thing we can really give him is our hearts and I think when we do, when we say God I just want to do what you would have me do, then I think we start to find ourselves and we discover subtle small things that we never imagined discovering in life, particularly about ourselves. Those small things help us live happy fulfilling lives and carry us through some very hard times.

How has the Holy Ghost helped you?

One thing the Holy Ghost has helped me with for sure is my education. As I tried to live right I know the Holy Ghost expanded my learning abilities and helped me learn Spanish in preparation to go live in Chile. The Spirit has also helped me get through my university education. I worked while in school and had a lot going on but as long as I did my part I felt like the Holy Ghost helped me remember things and increase my capacities.

How has the Book of Mormon helped you understand the purpose of life?

In the first three chapters of the Book of Mormon I read about a family with many challenges and blessings. I read about how some of this family comes to know God and some of the family doesn't. On page two we read about how Jesus Christ can guide and help us. I read about prayer and the importance of keeping God's commandments and the help that comes when I do so. I see more clearly that this life is a stretching experience with crucial guides and helps that get us through this wonderful journey that exists to help us grow and be better. I learn that my purposes in life cannot be truly satisfied without the help of my Savior.

How I live my faith

As a mormon I enjoy life, have fun, try to help other people, do my best in all that falls into my realm of responsibility, and get out of my comfort zone to reach out to others. Most importantly though, I'm just trying to follow my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I like visiting a widow who lives close by, shovelling snow off of people's walks in the winter, working with the mormon missionaries to share the love of God that has been shared with me and just trying to love those around me whether they be family, friends, strangers, or anyone but it ain't easy all the time
