Why I am a Mormon

I started out being a Mormon because I was raised in the church. Now, though, I am one because I know it is true. No one could convince me otherwise.

Please explain the part prayer plays in your life?

Without prayer, I would be lost. I am wise enough to know that I am too foolish to direct my life to its fullest potential. When I pray, God gives me that peace of mind to know that my life has a direction. He knows where I need to go, so who better to ask?

Can you talk about the missions of the Church and your participation in them?

Sure. No reason not to. The Church is a worldwide church, made for everyone, therefore there is no reason to exclude anyone from knowing what it is about.

How I live my faith

With everything that I am and have. My faith has become such a vital part of who I am, that I can hardly imagine what it would be like to not have it. It guides me every day in the choices I make, and I am constantly trying to improve my ability to listen to that guidance.

What are some things that tell you there is a God?

I don't know how to answer that question. I can think of tons of examples, but what could I say in such a brief answer that would really do justice? Anyone who read of one or two of my "evidences" would likely scoff and say that those are pitiful reasons for believing in a God, that they could be mere coincidence. I agree: one, maybe two, maybe even two hundred of these evidences could be pushed off as a series of unlikely coincidences, but when you combine a lifetime of blessings from the Lord, only a blind man could fail to see His hand.

Simply put: God is real, and He is there for anyone who will reach out to him. I have, and He most definitely has been there for me.

Everything around us testifies of a God who created all things. The complexity of life points toward an Intelligent Being who designed it, organized it and brought it to existence. The probability that everything around us may have arisen by mere chance is infinitely small, and the idea of a Supreme Creator is the only one that can make sense of all the beauty and complexity of nature including ourselves. And yet, these still do not prove the existence of God in the same sense that scientific concepts are proven. It is really impossible to prove the existence of God in the same, logical way used in science (the scientific method). That is why we say that we believe that there is a God, even if we have not seen him - this is called faith. I have not personally seen God, but my inner self tells me that he exists. Ultimately, it comes down to individual choice. We decide based on what we see and feel, on what the surroundings tell us, whether God exists or not. I choose to believe that there is a God, and this choice is one of my most important freedoms.

Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

I grew up thinking, at one point, Mormonism was cult. I made this assertion based on nothing but hearsay, and didn't actually know any tenets of the LDS faith. Now, as a person who has thoroughly investigated the sincerity and divine truthfulness of this Church, I can resoundingly say that the Church of Jesus Christ is by no means a cult. I find that the major reason why people think Mormonism is a cult is simply due to a lack of understanding of the Church. For instance, not many people really know that Mormons believe in and strive to be closer to Jesus Christ we believe Him to be our personal savior and redeemer of the world. We read the Bible and know it to be the word of God. We take communion. We have an unpaid clergy. We live to serve others as Christ would have done.

When people take the time to understand what Mormonism is really all about, like I did, they will understand that Mormons are normal people with normal problems, and each of us relies on God to be a better, more Christlike person.
