Hi, I'm Kaya
I am from Indiana. I love being a Latter-day Saint.
About Me
I am a mom and wife foremost. I work at a Catholic School as an Orton-Gillingham specialist for children with reading difficulties. I love history, politics, reading, cooking, competivite walking, swimming and hiking. I am the Primary President in my ward and love the calling and the children I serve. I have been married for 18 years to my wonderful sweetie and have three wonderful boys who are 12, 9, and 7. I have a terrific life and am so grateful for the blessings Heavenly Father has given me that allow me to love and serve in my church, school, and community.
Why I am a Mormon
I feel it is what Heavenly Father and Jesus want me to do with my life, so I will be able to come back and live with them and all the wonderful family members and friends I have in my life. To me Latter-day Saint doctrine makes sense and it helps me know what I need to do to one day reach my perfected self. It helps me "be good and do good things" for myself, my family, and those around me in my ward and community. I love the gospel and the way it helps me change me for the better.
Personal Stories
Why/How do you share the gospel with your friends?
I share the gospel with my friends by being me. I don't hide my Latter-day Saint faith, just as I would expect my friends not to hide things that they feel are important with me. True friends share their thoughts, feelings, dreams, and experiences with each other. In the daily experience of living and loving each other is how my friends learn of the gospel through me and my experiences. I am always happy to answer questions as they are asked of me by my friends and I in turn learn what they think and believe. They are my friends thus I love and care for them no matter what.
Which of the Savior’s teachings have influenced you?
Repentence is probably the one I most utilize in my life. As I get older I realize that this is the way we are able to become like Christ. I make mistakes in my family all the time. It isn't that I have huge sins. They are mostly things like being impatient or a little prideful in discussions with my husband. The weaknesses of not giving my best all the time. Getting tired and allowing that to make my decisions at times. Not always being kind when I feel badly or getting distracted with things that really aren't important when I need to be spending time with things that matter so much more. The humility that comes through repentence is so crucial for us to become like God. I work on this everyday.
Why do Mormons go on missions?
I went on my mission because I felt in my heart that is what I needed to do. I went because I wanted to do what God wanted me to do. It wasn't an easy decision to make and it was one of many hard things I have done in my life. It was well worth the sacrifices I made to go and has been something that helped me ultimately decide to continue to be a member of the church when I tried to turn away from it. I hope my service was helpful to the people where I served and I think of the friends I made there often.
How has the Book of Mormon brought you closer to God?
It is a beautiful witness of Jesus Christ and his dealings with people on the earth. It has helped me realize that Heavenly Father loves us so much and has given us scriptures to know that His love has existed from the beginning of time. Reading it helps me feel Father and Jesus close to me through the witness of the Holy Ghost. Having a second witness of Christ's ministry on earth is wonderful as well.
How I live my faith
Since I work in a Catholic School, I am able to speak of my faith often. It is a great blessing to be able to express my love of Heavenly Father and Jesus on a daily basis to my students, the faculty, and staff and support them, in building their own faith in Christ. I live my faith with my family in teaching my children the importance of living a Christ like life. I try to be a good example of faithful living to everyone I meet by living gospel principles to the best of my ability. Since I am the Primary President of my ward, I have the wonderful opportunity to testify of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ weekly to the children. I also help the Scouting program personally because I want the young men of the primary to be prepared for their priesthood roles as they grow up. I also this year, have started to be politically active in my state by helping a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives get elected to office. I feel the principles of thrift, personal responsibility, and service that are taught in the church need to be represented in our elected officials so I am helping someone who believes in these principles get elected.
