I'm in the National Guard serving as a Combat Medic. And you guessed it, I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Living in southern Utah, I have access to some of the best rock climbing year round. I love to rock climb, hike, bike, and play sports such as volleyball and Ultimate Frisbee. I am the father of a totally awesome 3 year old, and I am pushing for a degree in medicine to hopefully one day work in an Emergency Room.

Why I am a Mormon

There is but one author of all scripture and of all truth. So when I want to know whether someone speaks in accordance with Him, I seek Him in prayer. Because I know He will answer me. And I have received from Him, via the Holy Ghost, the knowledge of the truth of His gospel which He has established via His Prophets in these latter days. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is His church. This I know to be true because He has confirmed it to me. As he will for anyone wanting to know, who ask in faith.

Which of the Savior’s teachings have influenced you in your life?

Hope and forgiveness have been the most important teachings in my life, to date. I'm sure he has more instore : But up to the present time, the Lord has allowed some difficult times to press on me. During which my hope had been shattered, and my ability to forgive destroyed. But through His example in the Bible and the Book of Mormon. And via the teachings of His prophets and Apostles of today have I been able to not only restore my hope and ability to forgive. But now I have a much greater capacity to sustain my hope, and the hope of those I love. And also do I find the strength to forgive those whom I never thought I could forgive. Jesus Christ lives, and through his example can we all find greater strength to face the challenges of life.

How I live my faith

One of my most favorite things about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the Institute Program, i.e. seminary, religious courses. While attending college, it is such a relief when I am able to attend a class on the scriptures between my other college courses. It has always been a strength for me to involve the Lord in my life while I am doing my normal studies.

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

Our attitude towards homosexuals is no different then our attitude towards any individual with any type of tendencies. Everyone will find themselves faced with one tendency or another. Many face the tendency to anger quickly. Others find it difficult to accept people of different race, faith, or origin. Some struggle with controlling their desires for those of the opposite gender, while some struggle with controlling their desires for those of the same gender. Ether 12:27 "And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them." Homosexuality is a struggle, and through the Lord can that burden be lightened. Just like it is important for us to remove anger from our lives and control our passions and appetites, it is important for us to control all forms of tendencies that are not of God.

For me, God's plan for us is about families, a husband and wife and kids. But all people are children of God who deserve love and respect, including those who have different views about same sex marriage. However, when I really don't know, I turn to what prophets of God have said.

“People inquire about our position on those who consider themselves so-called gays and lesbians. My response is that we love them as sons and daughters of God. They may have certain inclinations which are powerful and which may be difficult to control. Most people have inclinations of one kind or another at various times. If they do not act upon these inclinations, then they can go forward as do all other members of the Church. If they violate the law of chastity and the moral standards of the Church, then they are subject to the discipline of the Church, just as others are.

“We want to help these people, to strengthen them, to assist them with their problems and to help them with their difficulties. But we cannot stand idle if they indulge in immoral activity, if they try to uphold and defend and live in a so-called same-sex marriage situation. To permit such would be to make light of the very serious and sacred foundation of God-sanctioned marriage and its very purpose, the rearing of families” (Ensign, Nov. 1998, 71).

When I think of how hard this must be for many, I think of our faith in Jesus Christ. He loves us and has given us guidance through prophets, we just need to follow.

Where did Mormonism and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints begin?

Are you a secular or a spiritual type of person? (1 Corinthians 3:2, Hebrews 5:12.)

Secular answer: The answer you may want to hear is that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began in 1830 on the Peter Whitmer farm in western New York. That’s when the founder, Joseph Smith, made the Church a legal entity in the United States. Many people are satisfied with that answer.

Spiritual answer: This is the same church that has been around since the dawn of time. This is the gospel that Jesus Christ gave to Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, that Christ and his apostles taught while he was here on the earth. Because we are prone to wander, God sends prophets to adjust our perspective and invite us to return, so that we may be truly happy. In order to invite the world back to his path once more, God restored this original gospel to the earth through Joseph Smith. Wherever the gospel goes, the Church is careful to live within the laws of the land. It spans all time and all lands, in any country which allows the Church to be established legally. (Twelfth Article of Faith: We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.)

Everyone on earth may know these truths for themselves, directly from God. It all depends with which answer you’re ready/willing to be satisfied. I have learned for myself that the answers that come from God are desirable above all others. (Book of Mormon, 1 Nephi 8:12).
