Why I am a Mormon
I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because it has led me to know who I am in this vast universe. I am a daughter of God. It means that I am significant no matter how small I may feel sometimes because the Creator of everything knows me by name.
Being a Mormon has taught me to love my Savior, Jesus Christ, with every fiber of my being. I have gained the knowledge that He lives, in a body of flesh and bone, and stands as my personal advocate and representative before my Heavenly Father.
Personal Stories
How has your knowledge of the Plan of Happiness changed/benefited your life?
I have a very vivid memory of being about 3 or 4 years old and sitting in junior Sunday School. We were practicing for a program and learning songs that we would sing. The room where we met looked like the main chapel except the pews were small for our little bodies to be comfortable. There were tall windows along either side of this “mini chapel” and on this particular morning the sun was streaming in the windows with the kind of rays that seem tangible. The rays of light and all the little things that danced in them mesmerized me. It was at that moment that I remember knowing that I had a Heavenly Father that was real. I could see Him clearly in my mind. I knew He loved me. I knew from that point on that regardless of what churned around me, He was there. I think that’s why I made it through my tumultuous childhood. He made Himself known in my life as a real Father. I grew to have a firm knowledge that my spirit was created by Heavenly Father that I lived with Him as His child before I came into this earth life and that He had hugged me, talked to me, loved me, and counseled me as any father would. Even though I didn’t remember the details of that pre-existent life, I still knew it had happened and I knew that His feelings and relationship with me hadn’t changed just because I was here on earth with a body. It was not hard to embrace His love and use it as my guiding star through all the horrible things I trudged through.
How has the Book of Mormon brought you closer to God?
I haven’t always had the connection with Christ that I have now. My relationship with Jesus Christ didn’t come until I was well into my adulthood. It wasn’t until I immersed myself in the scriptures for my college religion classes that I gained that precious understanding. I learned from the Book of Mormon in Alma 7:
“And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and sicknesses of his people.
“And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according their infirmities.”
These truths became the foundation for my life. When I've faced the pains of physical ailments (and the accompanying emotional pain), I've relied on that foundation to keep me going. Although there are some people that can sympathize and empathize with how I feel and what I'm going through, there is only one person who knows exactly how I feel—Jesus Christ. He knows because in Gethsemane He experienced exactly what I am feeling. He knows it all--physical pain, emotional agony, depression... everything. He not only atoned for my sins in the Garden, but He also experienced all my other non-sin related pain. No matter how alone I may feel, I can reach out and He will be there.
Jesus Christ has become my personal comforter. He is my confidante. He is my friend in the deepest sense of the word. The Book of Mormon is what has made that relationship possible.
How I live my faith
Every Sunday, I am the volunteer teacher for the adult Sunday School class called Gospel Doctrine. I get to study the scriptures all week so I can lead a 40 minute discussion in which all members of the class of around 50-80 people are welcome to participate. I probably learn more than everyone else does.
I believe that part of living my faith is being a good steward over God's creations and that which He has placed in my care. My husband and I live in a cottage-style bungalow on a 6800 square foot lot that's 50 feet wide. We make the most of every little inch of our garden that we can. I've designed and created our gardens to be a water-wise certified backyard wildlife habitat. Because of all the critters around our garden it has created a wonderful natural balance, so I don't have to use pesticides to grow fruit and vegetables. The greatest treat for me is to sit under our plum tree, pull a ripe plum off a branch, clean it off on my shirt, and eat it. It can't get better than that.
