Becky: Mormon.

Hi, I'm Becky

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I know someone everywhere I go. My husband and I took a trip to Chicago and while in the middle of the city we saw someone I graduated high school with in Maryland. I like to go to the grocery store and count how many people I see that I know. My husband loves to tease me because I can remember people's names years afterwards and I love saying hi to them even when they don't remember my name. I'm in my second year of teaching special education with children who have mild to moderate disabilities, but I actually graduated in visual art. I love hiking, camping, sewing, swimming, meeting new people, gardening, baking, cooking, couponing, painting, and reading.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon because when life gets tough I know I can rely on the gospel and my Savior because of the promises we've made to each other. Within the last year and a half I had my gallbladder removed, our apartment flooded, and I started a new job. It was probably one of the most trying times of my life. I worked three different jobs at first and my husband worked one himself. He was going to school full-time and I was just trying to make ends meet. I didn't have insurance and life pretty much exploded in my face. I learned to trust my Heavenly Father and his plan for me. I received comfort from the Holy Ghost when everything around me was going wrong that I was loved and that all would work out for my good. If it weren't for our financial struggles I would have never started looking for a new job and I would have never started teaching. There is a hymn called How Firm a Foundation that says, "Fear not, I am with thee, oh be not afraid. For I am thy God and will still give thee aid. I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand. Upheld by my righteous omnipotent hand." I'm a Mormon because I believe as I live the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ that God will not abandon me.

Personal Stories

Which of the Savior’s teachings have influenced you in your life?

In our church there's a program for teenage girls called Young Women's. I was a part of this program growing up. It teaches and supports girls throughout their teenage years. When I was in Young Women's my favorite lessons were about our divine nature and individual worth as women. In a world where the pressure for women to fit a certain mold is high, I always felt like these lessons brought me comfort. I was taught that God loves me, that he cares about everything I do in my life. They taught me that the worth of a person's soul isn't measurable by money, our worth is infinite to our Heavenly Father. I know that no matter what size I am, no matter what clothes I wear, no matter how often I slip-up, God loves me and he always will because I am a divine individual and so are you.

How can we develop greater harmony in our homes?

Harmony is one of those hard things to develop. I grew up in a home with 5 girls and one bathroom. You can probably imagine the chaos and the arguments that erupted almost daily. Harmony was not the easiest thing to have. However, I've learned that harmony comes when we are focused on Jesus Christ. I also find that harmony takes a lot of effort. I try to pray for the Spirit in my home and to have the mindset to be a little nicer to my husband. When you live with someone you get to know them really well and oftentimes you know their faults better than anyone else. I try to focus on the good things my husband does and not the little annoying habits. I think that being positive about others helps bring peace and harmony to everyone around me.

What blessings have come through your faith in Jesus Christ?

I think the greatest blessing that has come from my faith is my marriage to my husband in the temple. I wouldn't have ever been able to find a better place on this earth to marry him. Because I stayed faithful to the promises I made at baptism to always remember Jesus Christ and keep his commandments I was able to enter the temple and make promises that would enable me to live forever with my family. Was I perfect? Am I perfect now? No way, but I have a testimony of the atonement and believe that God forgives us of our sins. As I repent I draw closer to my Father in Heaven and my husband. What a great blessing it is to know that no matter what comes my way, I have someone who has promised to always remain faithful to me and I to him.

How I live my faith

I teach children with disabilities in grades 4-6 math, reading, and writing. At church, I just started working with girls ages 8-11. We do fun activities during the week to help build our families and the community. I love working with youth!
