Why I am a Mormon

Being a mormon helps me to have direction in my life. The church helps me to be a better husband and father.

Being a mormon also helps me keep direction in life. I feel that the principals taught have also helped me in my professional career.

Personal Stories

How can we develop greater harmony in our homes?

We pray together as a family in my home. Each child takes a turn one night of a week. We encourage our children to pray for each other which seems to bring a good sense of love and unity among our children.

How I live my faith

I am currently serve as the cub master in the cub scouts. I love that I am able to be an example to the boys. I enjoy teaching them important principals in life. And building pinewood derby cars is fun.

I also respect and honor my wife and children. In a world that places little value on these relationships, it is nice to have a faith which places such a strong emphasis on family relationships.

Why don’t Mormons drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? What is the Mormon Church’s law of health and proper diet?

The church advises us to stay away from harmful and addictive substances. This can include anything from Coffee to alcohol. I personally think that this can extend even further to things like movies, music, and other media.

God gave us the ability to choose. There are substances in coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco and other harmful drugs that limit our ability to choose. The intent of the law of health we follow is to preserve our ability to make good choices. This law of health is called the “Word of Wisdom”. It not only guides us regarding the substances to avoid, but also those to include in our diet. We are told to eat fruits and vegetables in their season, include grains, and eat meat sparingly. We are promised that if we follow these guidelines we will be healthy, able to learn and accomplish all that is required of us by our various roles in life. I am grateful for the blessings I receive from following the Word of Wisdom.

As a Dietitian I especially love this law of health because as I’ve seen the US guidelines for nutrition develop they are now aligning with what the Lord told us many years before. I believe that the guidelines set forth in our law of health are the minimum requirements for good health. It may be necessary for some people to avoid certain foods or eat a lower fat diet, or avoid caffeine entirely, but these specifics are not mentioned in the law of health and are to be determined by each individual.

What is the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

This question is my all time favorite "tough topic" to discuss. I want to start off right off the bat by saying that no matter what you've been told, or who has told you it, Mormons DO NOT "hate" gays and lesbians. Or ANYONE for any reason. Ever. As witnesses of Christ, we do our best to emulate Him and live as He would have us live. That's not to say that we're perfect, because we're not... but I do know that Christ never hated anyone.

Mormons believe in the sanctity of marriage. We believe that God has ordained marriage, and the sacred powers of procreation, to be between a man and a woman. Sexual relations are a sacred thing. We believe that they are to be reserved for marriage. This law, the law of chastity, applies to every spirit son and daughter of God. It doesn't matter if you are attracted to the opposite gender or your same gender, you are commanded to live a chaste and virtuous life. The neat thing about God is that He's "no respecter of persons". This means that God requires the same things of all of us. We are to remain chaste until marriage, and within marriage chastity means that you only have those sacred relations with your spouse.

As a church, we welcome all who want to draw near to Christ. We love everyone, regardless of circumstance, as Christ loves them. We maintain that every single man, woman, and child on this earth is a son or daughter of God, and we treat them accordingly.
