Why I am a Mormon

I've spent my life searching for truths. Science, history, religion, the best truths most useful truths I've found, are those taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

What blessings have come through your faith in Jesus Christ?

In 2004 at young womens camp, my wife of 35 years suffered a serious stroke. While she did not quite know who I was at that point, she knew that we belonged to each other. And we do, and being members of the Church is what confirmed that to her, her 1st word to me was "Temple".

Can you talk about the missions of the Church and your participation in them?

As Branch President, I've worked with members, helping them solve problems in their lives. As a fmaily history advisor, I've run a LDS branch family history library. As scoutmaster, I've helped young men set and accomplish goals, and acquire skills.

In what ways have your prayers been answered?

My whole life is an answer to my youthful prayers. I did not bring that much to the table, but with God's help, I can sometimes be a "silk purse"..Then, of course, there's the rest of the time..:-)

How I live my faith

I've been asked twice to serve by leading the congergation. I've enjoyed those "tours of duty" and interacted with so many wonderful people. I've done my best to be the person the Church taught me God wants me to be. Nowhere near perfect, but heading that way...

Does The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints endorse political parties?

Nope, every year from the pulpit the Church asks me to read a directive that we do not discuss politics on the church grounds. We will sometimes endorse or oppose something in the public arena, but each member will examine their conscience and act as they chose. I have close friends in the church who belong to both major political parties, and there are good members of the church serving in congress from both major parties. So it has always been, and so it will likely continue.

No. The church advocates principles and doctrine but does not endorse a certain political party or candidate. If you look in the United States Congress, you'll see members of the Mormon church sitting on both sides of the aisle from the current Senate Majority Leader to a 2008 presidential candidate.

However, the church is involved in the public arena when political initiatives intersect with principles of Christ's gospel. When this happens, the church will release a statement advocating certain principles and encouraging members to uphold these principles. This type of action often leads to confusion. Church support for an initiative for religious reasons should not be taken to imply support for a particular political party. These are two distinctly separate activities.

What are Mormon women like? Do Mormons believe in equality of men and women?

Mormon women are exactly like non-Mormon women in many ways. Some of us are stay-at-home mothers, while other Mormon women work outside the home. Regardless of our circumstances or choices in terms of employment, we try to work with our husbands and families as a team to get things taken care of within our homes.

My husband is my partner and my best friend and vice versa for him. He doesn't "rule over me" any more than I would do the same to him. We are equal partners in our eternal marriage. The church teaches us to be kind to our families as well as our friends and we want to make our homes a kind of spiritual refuge for everybody.
