Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I want to follow the Savior, this is His church restored in the Latter-days. I also know it is the only way to be truly happy!

How does making right choices help us make more right choices?

When I was 14 there was a movie that everyone was going to go see. I had made personal goals in relation to the things that I wanted to see and hear. I wanted to follow the 13th Article of Faith: "If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things." I felt alone sometimes as friends would gather and talk about the funny or emotional parts of this and other films. It became easier for me to turn away from the things I did not want to see and hear and not become desensitized from it. I decided to go into Musical Theater in college and it definitely helped me choose to only participate in shows that I would be okay watching, or inviting my grandma to. I know that we can be seriously effected by what we view, read or hear. The spirit is strongest in my life when I keep the outside noises to a minimum. I need the spirit of the Lord with help in all that I do, especially as a mother of 3 young children that require so much of me. I want to love them and my husband as the Savior wants me to. This is the way to be truly happy!

How I live my faith

One day at a time. Writing a letter, kissing an owie, praying with my children, sharing the gospel with friends and neighbors, and singing.

Why is family so important to Mormons?

In a Proclamation to the World on the Family, it declares that the "family is central to the creator's plan". What is it about family that provides the experiences we need to become more like our Eternal Father? Where else do we learn patience with a brother, sister, or spouse? Where else do we feel the tender deep feelings of a parent when a child is in trouble or struggling? Every day I am growing to know and understand God better because of my family and the gospel that makes our purpose here so clear. The role of father, mother, brother, sister are eternal and thank our loving God it is that way.

After I joined the Mormon Church I learned about the importance of families. Not long after that I realized that if I was going to follow this teaching I needed to tell my father that I loved him. That was very difficult for me since my dad and I argued so much. I spent the better part of 2 weeks trying to determine how I could do this. When the time came I found that the words came more easily than I had thought. From that point to the time he died, about 22 years later, he and I had an entirely different relationship. We were now friends. And I found how much I regretted all our arguments while growing up. And now I find that I miss him and more fully understand how important our families are.

Why don’t Mormons drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? What is the Mormon Church’s law of health and proper diet?

God gave us the ability to choose. There are substances in coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco and other harmful drugs that limit our ability to choose. The intent of the law of health we follow is to preserve our ability to make good choices. This law of health is called the “Word of Wisdom”. It not only guides us regarding the substances to avoid, but also those to include in our diet. We are told to eat fruits and vegetables in their season, include grains, and eat meat sparingly. We are promised that if we follow these guidelines we will be healthy, able to learn and accomplish all that is required of us by our various roles in life. I am grateful for the blessings I receive from following the Word of Wisdom.

As a Dietitian I especially love this law of health because as I’ve seen the US guidelines for nutrition develop they are now aligning with what the Lord told us many years before. I believe that the guidelines set forth in our law of health are the minimum requirements for good health. It may be necessary for some people to avoid certain foods or eat a lower fat diet, or avoid caffeine entirely, but these specifics are not mentioned in the law of health and are to be determined by each individual.
