Personal Stories
Please share your feelings/testimony of Joseph Smith.
I was skeptical about Joseph Smith before I was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a Protestant I had heard things about Joseph Smith that made me have doubts about him. However, I was curious about the church because I had heard many good things about Mormons and the fact that they were very family oriented.
My daughter started going with her friend to Primary after school to have something to do. They were putting a play together on the stage of the local LDS church building and invited all the parents to come and see it. My wife and I went to the play and were quite impressed. I ended up meeting the Stake Missionaries and the Bishop at that time. They invited me to learn more about the church. I took them up on the idea and started taking the missionary lessons. During the lessons I felt a warm feeling come over me each time. I was asked to read the Book of Mormon in its entirety before they completed the lessons. I did so and felt that same warm feeling each time that I read. The missionaries asked me to pray about its truthfulness. I did even though I already felt it to be true. I also came to realize that Joseph Smith could not have been its creator, but only the translator of the ancient writings given in the golden plates which were written by ancient prophets and delivered by the Angel Moroni as Joseph claimed. I came to know that this was true because of the warm feelings that I got from the Holy Spirit.
I truly believe that Joseph was a prophet of God, and that our Heavenly Father did restore the gospel through him.
Why do Mormons do family history or genealogy work?
We believe that we can pull our families together and remain a family for all eternity by making sure that their temple work is completed here on the earth.
What blessings have come through your faith in Jesus Christ?
One of the greatest blessings I have received from joining the Church of Jesus Christ came from the "Word of Wisdom". Prior to becoming a member I drank alcoholic drinks, smoked and loved iced tea and coffee. I tried many times to quit smoking but was never successful. I truly believe that I received help from Heaven, which allowed me to quit "cold turkey". I could hardly believe how easily the cravings went away. Drinking alcohol, coffee, and tea were also just as easy for me to give up.
The Gospel truly became a major part of my life and replaced most of my bad habits. However, I am not perfect. I am still working to become as much like my Savior and oldest brother, Jesus Christ, as I can.
I have now been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for most of my life. I became a member at the age of 26 and am now 64. The gospel as taught to me has been and is a great way of life.
