Hi, I'm Mary
I love learning. I'm a Mormon.
About Me
I am a college student studying genealogy and web design. I love to hang out with my friends, watch movies, read books, write and research my ancestors. I live far from home but try to stay in touch with my family.
Why I am a Mormon
I was raised as a Mormon. My dad decided to join the LDS church when he was 16, and my mom's parents joined the church about a year before she was born. My parents have done an amazing job of raising their kids and teaching them the gospel of Jesus Christ.
But I am not a Mormon simply because my parents are. I was always taught, both at home and at church, that I needed to know for myself that the gospel is true, that I cannot live on "borrowed light". I have had times in my teenage years when I really wondered if it was true, really wanted to know for myself. I came to know gradually from little moments when I noticed simple miracles in my life and felt a strengthening power that can be explained only as the Spirit of God.
I am a Mormon because I know that there is a purpose to my life, and that is to build others and do what the Lord asks. I know that by being a member of the Lord's church I can help to bring about His work, which is to bless the lives of every member of the human race, one person at a time.
Personal Stories
Why do Mormons do family history or genealogy work?
One of the greatest things about the Lord's church is that everyone is equal. God makes it possible for everyone to achieve the same blessings, reach the same heaven, no matter where or in what time they live or have lived. What I find even more amazing is that He makes it so that we can all help each other get there. I love researching my ancestors and learning their stories. I look forward to the day when I will be able to meet them and talk to them. They'll thank me for finding them and making it possible for them to be baptized and return to Heavenly Father, and I'll thank them for their stories, for their lives, for giving me life and giving me a history and a name to remember and cherish and build on. Through doing family history work, I feel closer to and more united with my family, both those living and dead.
How I live my faith
I live in an area where there are a lot of single college students like me. We live with the pressures of school and work, and of trying to figure out our futures and accomplish our dreams. In this very self-focused time of my life, the gospel of Jesus Christ gives me a reason to reach out to others and try to help them be cheerful and do better in their lives. Through doing my church duties, I have had opportunities to reach out to others and create lasting friendships with those I serve.
