Hi, I'm Valerie
I’m a university student. I love to sew and sing. And I’m a Mormon.
About Me
I am currently going to school studying Performing Arts Design, which is big fancy name for Costume Design. I love costumes, sewing and theatre so it is the perfect fit for me! I love being in school and immersing myself in learning. I love learning about people, cultures and the world as I read scripts for different plays. I just crave learning more and more. And the wonderful thing about my belief in Jesus Christ and His church is that as I learn more in school, the more my testimony in Christ grows.
Why I am a Mormon
I am a Mormon because I love my Savior Jesus Christ and want to be like Him. I love that through church teachings and the incredible atonement of Christ it is actually possible to be forgiven of my sins and mistakes and one day become perfect. As a perfectionist, the atonement is incredibly comforting. As I’ve learned and prayed about the atonement I never cease to be amazed at its all-encompassing power. Without this extraordinary gift from the Savior I would be nothing and stuck in past sins and mistakes, forever haunting me with guilt. But through a loving Savior we can repent because He has provided a way for our escape! Because of the atonement I can see life through a beautiful lens and there is always hope (and God) smiling brightly upon us. God and the miraculous atonement help me to see past the troubles and challenges of life. He has not forgotten us and never will. I know that He is ever mindful of each of His children and longs for each of us to be happy. The incredible hope, peace, joy and love that comes from this knowledge is why I am a Mormon.
Personal Stories
How has attending Church services helped you?
I remember when I first moved away from home I couldn't wait for Sunday to come so I could go to church. I wanted to go to church so badly because I knew that I would feel the same comforting feelings of love, peace and enlightenment that I have always felt at my meetings. Church continues to have an incredible influence on me and gives me the strength I need for each new week.
How has your knowledge of the Plan of Happiness changed/benefited your life?
My knowledge of the Plan of Happiness has brought meaning and hope to my life. The knowledge that I lived with God before and through the atonement can once more return to live with Him gives me peace and comfort through trying times of life.
How I live my faith
I cannot imagine my life without the gospel, it affects everything I do and say. I love it. Some may say all the “rules” in our religion are constraining, but after living them for years I know that is not the case. They truly are freeing and have opened up many opportunities and friendships to me. The ladies in each congregation are assigned to visit a few other ladies in the ward, so everyone has what is called a visiting teacher. Visiting teaching has been such a blessing in my life. When I first moved away from home, my visiting teachers were lifesavers to a lonely college girl. Both girls I visited and girls who visited me have become dear lifelong friends who I probably would have been too shy to approach otherwise.
Through various assignments I’ve had in my congregations I have learned and honed great skills. I’ve served as my class secretary and president as a youth which prepared me for other roles as an adult. Right now I serve as my ward’s choir director. I love it! I love leading choirs and so it has been a wonderful opportunity to develop my talent others more while preparing beautiful, uplifting music that “is a prayer unto the Lord” (D&C 25:12). I love the opportunities and joy that comes from serving others and the Lord. It is truly a blessing to have the gospel of Jesus Christ in my life.
