Wesley: Mormon.

Hi, I'm Wesley

I'm superwoman's husband, a father of 5, a bear-herding sheepdog's owner, a dentist, creative fiction's lover...and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

By day I fight decay, saving the world one tooth at a time. By afternoon I am joyfully reunited with superwoman, raising citizens of the world. By night I study as much as possible before the enemy of sleep invades.

I love the fusion of the great outdoors with moving water; many of my most cherished memories come from times of swimming, kayaking, water-skiing, fishing, tubing, and camping.

Some of my best ideas come to me while on my John Deere lawn tractor. I love stories--books, movies, radio--anything that stirs the waters of creativity and change for the better. Books fill my life like spices in a kitchen. I hope to someday publish stories that might guide my children through life's rapids.

I am the son of a Costa Rican and an apple orchardist, which is sure to change in the next five years. I met superwoman in Switzerland; years later, we semi-eloped to Seattle, sleeping in opposite bucket-seats of an Isuzu Rodeo (Uhaul in tow) parked in the Seattle temple parking lot. We have been homeless, penniless, and uneducated, but never without hope or faith.

My life revolves around my family...

Why I am a Mormon

I remember standing by her side, waiting for a thin wafer-cookie at our local Catholic church. My mother argued vehemently that her children should be allowed the sacrament. She taught me a belief in and love for God.

As a child, I remember a prayer displayed on my bedroom wall: "Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take." Later, I prayed in the form of a personal letter. She taught me to pray.

Jehovah's Witnesses introduced me to scripture, Evangelical Christians introduced me to the need to be saved, and Mormon friends testified repeatedly of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, including the reality of authority, covenants, ordinances, the gift of the Holy Ghost, and temple blessings.

When all hope was lost in finding my way, I studied, I read scriptures, I studied some more, I prayed, I listened, and I asked questions. Finally, when I vocally prayed that I was willing to follow the witness I was seeking, I recognized the influence of Holy Spirit.

This witness did not come in the thundering of clouds, the flickering of my room's incandescent light bulb, or the complete knowledge through my senses that God existed; rather, it came in remembrance of all that I had experienced in my search for a relationship with my Father in Heaven. There were benchmarks--telephone poles, if you will--along the way of my spiritual marathon: testimonies of random strangers, lunch breaks that flew by with the scriptures in my hands, and energizing prayers.

That was almost two decades ago. My journey has not changed much; I still run this spiritual marathon telephone pole to telephone pole. The more I commit to understand and obey, the greater my results are. This is a fact of our existence; we must begin with faith and gather data. As we do so, we are given evidences equal to that which we put our faith in.

I testify of the power of prayer, scripture, and a relationship with God.

How I live my faith

Family history has become important to me over the years. After joining the Church through baptism, I learned that I was a descendant of a legacy of faith--the Mormon pioneers! This legacy was broken generations before my acceptance of the restored gospel. My life has become a link back to this legacy of faith, as well as a new link on my paternal side, which was never introduced to the gospel. Discovering both my ability to mend and forge legacies of faith has given me great purpose.

Superwoman and I work hard to teach our children how to be intellectual and spiritual thinkers. We regularly study the scriptures individually and as a family. Prayer, forgiveness, service, love, and the peace of the Holy Spirit adorn our home like paintings on a wall.

I testify of living prophets, the veracity of the Book of Mormon, and the reality of a Savior who offers a partnership of perfection to each of us. By merely wanting to be righteous and acting upon truth as it is revealed to us, we lean on His perfection; seeking to change, improve, and repent, we make our investment. The results are immeasurable spiritual and temporal dividends. My life is a testimony of this continual process.

I feel fortunate to have recognized a fountain of truth by the Holy Spirit's witness. We are all children of our Father in Heaven. I testify that the restored gospel of Jesus Christ is real. It can be tested in our lives. I have tested it (and continue to do so) and it never fails to produce lasting results.
