Hi, I'm Kathy
I am a stay at home mom who loves to scrapbook, tole paint, oil paint, and do genealogy and I'm a Mormon.
About Me
I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Elementary Education. I met my husband while at BYU. He was an international student from Canada. When he asked me to marry him he also asked me to go to Canada with him. That was over 30 years ago and we have been in Canada in the same town ever since. At first I was going substitute in the school system to bring in a little extra money. Then we made the decision that I would be a stay at home mom. After eight children and 30 years of staying home with them I have "retired." Now when my youngest three are in school, I do the things that I love to do. I am an avid scrapbooker and with lots of kids to do scrapbooks for it keeps me very busy. I also love to tole paint, play piano and do genealogy. One of the biggest challenges that I had in moving to Canada was that I went from being a city girl to a country wife surrounded by open spaces, cows, pigs, chickens etc. The isolation at first was so hard but after a few years I came to love small town life and the peace, beauty and quiet of the country.
Why I am a Mormon
My parents are active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They took us to church each week and as children going to church and living the principles taught in the church were just what we did. I think that I took for granted all that the gospel had given me. It wasn't until I was at University and began to really study the Book of Mormon that everything came together. Everything that my parents taught me and the things I learned through attending church were good and right. Through the years as I have studied more about our Savior Jesus Christ I have come to truly love him. I know that our Heavenly Father and His son Jesus Christ love each one of us. I know that the Savior's atonement is real. He didn't suffer for only our sins but for our pains, hurts, and the loneliness that we feel. He has been through it all and He understands. I have also come to know through serious study and prayer that the Book of Mormon is another Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is a book of scripture like the Bible. Joseph Smith actually translated it from gold plates, just like he said he did. As I have studied his life I know that he saw Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ just like he said he did and that he was a prophet and that we are lead by a prophet today. In my mind and in my heart this feels so good and so right that I know these things to be true.

Please explain the part prayer plays in your life?
Prayer is so important to me. I start each day in prayer. It is my time to talk to my Heavenly Father and to ask for His help through the day. At night I spend some time in prayer again, thanking Him for my blessings and for helping me. I wouldn't want to attempt anything that is hard or challenging without praying for help. I remember driving home one winter night and I was caught in a bad snowstorm. The roads were slick and snow covered and you couldn't see the yellow or the white lines. The snow was blowing so visibility was down to only a few feet. I was on a deserted highway and I felt so alone and very scared. I said a prayer and then inched along toward home. I could see where the long grass was on the side of the road so I followed the edge. As soon as I prayed for help a warm feeling came over me and I was calm. Each time visibility went to almost nothing I prayed again and the snow would let up and I could go further. I know that I made it home that night because of my prayers and the prayers of my family who were praying for me to get home. I know that prayers are answered and that we have a loving Heavenly Father who will listen to all our hurts and concerns. He loves us and with prayer we are never alone.
How I live my faith
I have been involved in my community for many years as a reporter and writer for the community newspaper. It is a way to keep neighbors informed and unified. I also volunteer at the schools my children attend either on the Parent Council or as a Room Parent. I really enjoy planning the parties for each of the holidays. It's so fun to come up with new ideas that are fun. It also helps me to have experiences in the school that I may have missed since I made the decision to not pursue a career in Education and to become a stay at home mom. I also serve in the church. Right now I lead and teach music to the children. I love music and especially teaching children what the songs that we sing really mean. I find it very challenging to find ways to teach the songs that keep the children engaged. I really want singing time to not only be a learning experience but to also be fun. Music brings so much joy into our lives. I also love to visit and help others. I find that if you are not having a good day, then you need to go out and find someone that is also not having a good day and then do something for him or her. It can be a little as a smile or a phone call but whatever type of service you can give helps you to feel better. I am a huge fan of Random Acts of Kindness. I feel that if Jesus were with us here on the earth, He would also be helping and loving others.
