About Me

Growing up I was always interested in math and science. In college I majored in statistics which allows me to apply math skills to many different sciences. Now I get to explain science and math to my 4 children along with teaching them gospel topics.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I choose to be. I was raised in the LDS church, in fact some of my ancestors were among the pioneers that first settled in Utah. But, even though I was raised in the church and learned the doctrines from birth, I have investigated the teachings for myself and gained my own personal testimony of the truth of the Book of Mormon and that there is a living prophet on the earth in our day.

How I live my faith

I do my best to be an example to my wife and children. I like callings that are either teaching or behind the scenes clerk or secretary where I can help others in their callings.

The introduction of the Book of Mormon begins claiming that "[it] is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel." It continues on to add that "the book was written by many ancient prophets by the spirit of prophecy and revelation." Just as the Bible was written by many ancient prophets, namely Moses, Isaiah, John the Revelator, etc, the Book of Mormon was written by ancient prophets such as Nephi, Alma, Ether, Mormon, Moroni etc. God has called men from the beginning of time to receive revelation and guide His children; we have evidence in the Bible of His dealings in Israel... but if we are truly all God's children and He loves each of us, why would he lead a portion of His people and leave another in darkness? He would not do it. He would become a partial God if He were to do so, and He has never, and will never, be a partial God. Just as He called these men to bring truth to the people of Israel, He also brought those same truths to another portion of His children through prophets in the ancient Americas. In John 10:16, Jesus gave evidence of another people under Him saying; "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." The people in ancient America fell among the sheep He spoke of, and the Book of Mormon came forth from them. Show more Show less

The Book of Mormon is a record of the ancient inhabitants of America, and their dealings with God; namely, the native Americans. God is no respector of persons; He loves all His children. He wants us all to make it back to live with Him; the Book of Mormon is proof to me that God loves all people of all nations; why would he only give His Word to just the Children of Israel? The Book of Mormon was written by the prophets that were called of God on the American Continent; they too testifed that Jesus is the Christ, and he would surely come to redeem us from our sins. The book gets it's name from the prophet Mormon, who collected the individual records kept by prophets throughout the centuries, and complied them into one volume, written on gold plates. He gave them to his son, Moroni, who buried them in a hill by what is now known as Upstate New York. Centuries later, a young man named Joseph Smith, who wanted to know which church was true, had a vision of God the Father and His Son, who told him the truth was lost over the years, and he would be a tool in the Lord's hands to restore what was lost. A few years later, that same Moroni who buried the plates, visited Joseph as an angel of the Lord, and directed him to the ancient record. Through the gift on power of God, he was able to translate the book into English. The Book of Mormon helps us understand the fullness of the Gospel; with the Bible, we can discover God's will for us. Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

"Required" is an interesting word when it comes to faith and religion. In the Mormon Church no one is "required" to serve a mission. Church membership is not revoked for not serving a mission. In this sense, they are not required, yet serving a mission is encouraged at many stages in life and in many different capacities throughout the world. Missionary service is a tremendous blessing, a challenge, and one of the main focuses of the faith. The life of Jesus Christ was the life of a missionary in many respects. Performing service for one another, preaching the glad message of the gospel, and increasing the faith and dedication of God's children are exemplified in Christ's life and mirrored by those in missionary service. To dedicate a portion of one's life in service propels those who serve and those who are served into a better life. During my two year mission to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and during my two year service mission with LDS Family Services, I was greatly blessed and strengthened. (I hope those whom I served found some value in my service as well.) That strength has taught me to better navigate this life, has kept my family relations intact, and has been the method of helping others overcome their trials as well. Spiritually speaking, I don't find value in reflecting on what my life would be like without serving a mission. Instead, I rejoice in knowing that without that time in missionary service my life would be significantly less happy and productive. In my life, serving a mission has taken on many of the characteristics of a "required" act since I can't picture myself progressing very far without having served as a missionary. While not required to be a member of the Mormon church, missionary service has been a critical and welcome part of my life and growth spirituality. I will be forever grateful that I had the opportunity to serve missions, and look forward to serving in many more. Show more Show less
