Lynn : Lynn McDowell, convert, health care provider, Lutheran, skeptical, Mormon.

Hi, I'm Lynn

I am a daughter of God who loves me and I love Him. I am a Mormon!

About Me

When I was a member of The Church for a little over a year, I had an opportunity to serve a full time mission in Pennsylvania.

When I came home, I met my future spouse. My husband, Dale and I have were married in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1978. We have four grown children and a son-in-law that bring great joy into our lives

I have worked in Patient Care for 19 years . I am currently a safety coach. I work with patients who need one on one care for safety reasons and I find it extremely rewarding.

I also have a home based business and thoroughly enjoy the friendships I have developed with my customers.

My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was 12 and I have made hundreds of afghans and several altar cloths for use in the Chicago, Columbus and Salt Lake City Temples.

I also love to scrapbook and make greeting cards. I find great joy in performing random and spontaneous acts of kindness.

I love to read the scriptures, motivational books, biographies, historical and Christian fiction as well.

I love to sing for fun, to comfort patients and to worship my Heavenly Father.

I love to can. It is one household task that lasts for a long time.

I love nature and enjoy hiking and para-sailing. Thanks to my son-in-law I have rediscovered my love of roller coasters.

I enjoy playing games with family and friends and I love to entertain.

Why I am a Mormon

I had a good friend from High School who became a Latter-day Saint while I was living out of state. I picked up a pamphlet about the Mormons printed by the protestant church I attended. If was full of half truths and inuendos, that I knew my friend, Jane, was too intelligent to believe.

When I returned home I got a job I didn't feel qualified for. My first day on that job, was Jane's last day on a job in the same building. We met in the restroom and renewed our friendship. Jane had changed in many ways for the better.

She invited me for dinner and introduced me to the missionaries and some other friends from church. I asked many questions. The missionaries told me that it would be easier to answer my questions if I just let them teach me 6 brief lessons about the basic teachings of The Church.

I wondered what I had gotten myself into, but decided that I couldn't criticize a religion I knew nothing about. I fully intended to hear them out, read what they asked me to read and pray about it so I could look Jane in the eye and tell her that she was being deceived. To my surprise, I received an overpowering awareness that their message was true. When I read and prayed, I felt warmth and light in my heart, a sense of comfort.

I was very active in my protestant church. I taught sunday school, sang in the choir and was a youth leader. There were doctrines they taught that had troubled me, but I had always assumed I just wasn't spiritual enough to understand them. Know I knew they just weren't true. My family thought I only made the change for social reasons and didn't think it would last.

It has been 38 years since I was baptized and I have never heard a doctrine or counsel that I could not kneel in prayer and receive a witness of it's divine origin.

I know with all my heart that the Savior established a church during his earthly ministry and that he has restored it in the latter days for our benefit. It has been my greatest blessing. My husband and I rarely miss. Each week we are taught, uplifted and loved. Through our involvement in Church activities we have opportunities to serve that help us demonstrate our love for the Savior and enrich our lives.

Our adult children have continued with this legacy of growth and service and they lead lives of joy and fulfillment because of it.

Personal Stories

Can you think of a specific challenge in your family that Gospel Principles helped overcome?

I remember many times when my husband I prayed about the way to handle discipline issues with our children. We would let them know that we prayed about them and it seemed to help them realize that we had their best interests at heart and that Heavenly Father knew them and was concerned about their welfare.

We prayed together about everything from escaped hamsters to their fathers impending surgery. The answers we received to those prayers taught them communication with God was a great source of guidance, comfort and inspiration.

What have you done successfully to shield your family from unwanted influences?

A prophet of God counseled us not to watch R rated movies. My husband and I I don't believe that we will ever miss out on anything of value by obeying that counsel and we don't allow them in our home.

We also encouraged our children to participate in the youth programs of The Church including the Young Women program and Scouting. All three of our boys became Eagle Scouts and our daughter earned an equivalent award in Young Women. By actively focusing on worthwhile goals and associating with friends who shared their values they were better equipped to make correct choices.

We also supported our children in their participation in worthwhile activities at school and in the community. Service teaches skills, builds character and self worth, positive friendships and allows little time for less meaningful pursuits.

How I live my faith

I love people. I work in patient care and I have a home based business. I am a visiting teacher and an advisor and teacher for the 16 &17 year old girls in our congregation. I enjoy nurturing others and helping them to feel truly valued. I pattern my life according to gospel teachings with faith that others will see Heavenly Father at work in my life and the Savior's image in my countenance. I am filled with joy and gratitude for the comfort, guidance and awareness of the miracles in my day to day life that allow me to live my life with confidence in a troubled world.
