Why I am a Mormon

I am a convert to the church and didn't really become actively involved until my teenage years. However, during my teenage years is when questions that I had were really starting to get answered and it didn't matter what other church I went to, they just didn't fill my cup like this church did. This is the church that truly has the answers to life's question that we all tend to ask at some point in our lives.

How can we develop greater harmony in our homes?

I think that order to develop harmony in our homes is by first learning to serve one another within our families. Once we can learn to serve one another in our families. I think that our families will have a greater love for each other. Not only a greater love for each other, but also an appreciation. Service doesn't have to be just doing chores around the house, but willingly do another member of the household's chore for them or just some random act of kindness. I had great grandmother whose favorite phrase was "Kill 'em with kindness!" I think that really holds true in today's society. If we are kind to each other in our own homes, then it will show. In Matthew 5:16, we read, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

How I live my faith

I am amazed at how the teachings really do affect a person's life. As I obediently and faithfully follow the teachings, I do feel the blessings from following those teachings. I also feel my Savior's love for me. As I study the scriptures, pray with my wife, and say my personal prayers, and etc, it all comes together. I know that some obstacles in life will not always be easy; however, I know that I am not alone in hurdling through those obstacles. One of the ways that I serve in my local congregation is I am their website administrator. I keep up with making sure that any activities are posted and announced, and since each member is asked to serve in different callings, I am asked to make sure that information is up-to-date on the website as well.

What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon is not just a book. It is what it says it is. It is another testament of Jesus Christ. In the book, it contains a history of people who migrated from Jerusalem to the Americas. In this history, it also contains their experiences of miracles that were encompassed about. It also contains teachings that help us to come closer to Jesus Christ.

If I may share one excerpt from it, it would be 2nd Nephi 25: 23 and 26 which reads:

23 For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.

26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

When I read from its pages, I feel closer to my Heavenly Father and the Savior, Jesus Christ.

One other scripture I would like to share with you from 2nd Corinthians 13:1 which Paul writes to the saints in Corinth, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” I do believe that the Book of Mormon is another witness of Jesus Christ and that it truly does testify of Him and His divinity.

It is my conviction that if one simply examines the patterns and information given about holy writ in general that they ought to be inclined to ask and pray about whether or not the Book of Mormon is inspired. I say this because the Book of Mormon is not just a book of prayers or ethical teachings. The Book of Mormon is a historical record that has a deep and powerful impact on millions of people every single day. Religion aside, a book as influential and striking as the Book of Mormon is worth the investigation of anyone genuinely seeking truth. There are very few books that have entire study manuals, curriculum, books, thesis papers, scientific research, grammatical and literary research, live performances, and general discussion entirely about its content. The Bible might be the only other thing with as much extensive literature and documentation pertaining to its writings and doctrines. The Book of Mormon is at the very least intriguing when supplemented with archeological finds, external historical information, unique writing patters such as chiasmus, and overall literary competency and beauty found within the writing. From a non-religious stand point it is impressive, but from a religious perspective it is life changing. To have a testimony of a thing is powerful, but to hinge an entire belief system on 530 pages is another thing. To be so emotionally and spiritually connected to a thing is powerful, but when that thing is a book - that book must be something more than just written words. That book must be something inspired by God, preserved by His hand, and prepared by His grace. I believe that the Bible is one of those books. I also believe that the Book or Mormon is one of those books. There is no proving the Book of Mormon just like there is no proving the Bible. We believe that the teachings and doctrines found in the pages of the old and new testament are real and trustworthy. We cannot explain how, except perhaps the mercies and merit of God, the Bible was preserved for our days. But though we cannot explain it, we simply know it. If you ask any latter-day saint to prove the Book of Mormon to be true, they will simply reply that they cannot prove it, but they know it to be true. One should not demand evidence for the bible, they should read it study it and pray to know if it is true. It is the same for the Book of Mormon. Now the interesting thing about the Book of Mormon is that it something that you can feel, see, test, and try. It is real and tangible. I am confident that if anyone who is level headed and reasonable reads what is in the Book of Mormon and then simply asks if it is true that they will have a profound feeling come over them. But this feeling cannot come if there is an ulterior agenda for the reader. If you don't want it to be true or want to find flaws and errors in the text then you certainly will not obtain this profound feeling. You have to grant the fact that all things are indeed possible with God, and that he certainly could provide something more to draw us even closer to his will. Think of the Book of Mormon like the New Testament to the Jews. During the time of Paul and Peter, the Jews were very set in their ways. They had the Old Testament, and that was all that they felt that they needed for salvation. There was no mention of 12 apostles or a New Testament in the Old Testament; it was doctrines that were added upon to bring Gods children even closer to him. To say that the Bible is all that is needed is to say exactly what the Jews said about the teachings of Paul and the apostles. Must we be so quick to limit Gods ability to speak to us? Is it not a blessing to have more of his written word? I can understand a skeptic of The Book of Mormon. Many and man has tried to con the world into believing his new religion. But that is simply not the case with Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. I challenge anyone to read unbiased biographies about Joseph Smith and his character. Read the entries of the people who knew him and what they thought about his life and motives. What you will find is not a usurper or power, nor a charlatan, but rather an amazing individual whose life was taken in the pursuit of preaching revealed doctrines. The Book of Mormon is something that people have sacrificed their entire lives for. Its teachings have a daily effect of millions of people worldwide. Its doctrines bring peace and Joy to the hearts of the humble and faithful. The Book of Mormon is the Word of God. I have to doubt of that.

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

Honestly admitting that you have homosexual feelings is often a scary and humiliating process – many are mistreated and must sort through these powerful emotions on their own. You have my deepest admiration and love. Your life is an amazing opportunity to make choices which will bring you peace and fulfillment. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I extend to you the same invitation that was extended to me: communicate your desires, fears and struggles to your loving Heavenly Father in prayer. Come to church with me! Or any other Mormon friend of yours. Give your burdens to God and trust in His plan for you—one that by design results in your greatest happiness.
And when you go to church on Sunday, know that you are on equal standing with those who do or don't have same-gender attraction. I know that faithful and obedient members of the Church will welcome you and love you.
Just like heterosexual members of our church, it is not a sin to be attracted to someone. However, intimacy is a sacred part of a loving relationship between a husband and wife. We are surrounded by a world of smut and filth which make a mockery of true love. Outside of marriage, the management of our sexual urges, whether homosexual or heterosexual, is to master the greatest power God has given His children on earth -- to create families.
