Why I am a Mormon

I converted to the Church 24 years ago after visiting the Mesa, Arizona Temple Visitor's Center. Trying to live the teachings of the Church can be a challenge, but I have always found them to be a source of great peace.

In what ways have your prayers been answered?

I keep an 'answered prayer journal' where I keep track of the prayers that the Lord has answered. By doing so, I can see time and again how the Lord has answered my prayers, even if the answer is 'no.'

What has helped develop greater harmony in your home?

Prayer. Prayer, Prayer, and more Prayer! We have family prayer at meal times and during Family Home Evening. It not only helps know what's on each other's minds but reminds us of what's important.

How I live my faith

I serve in my local faith community through participation in my local Priesthood organization.

Mormons believe Jesus Christ is their Savior. Why do we need a Savior?

We need a savior because God is perfect and we aren't. The Savior is a sort of bridge between sinful humans and the Perfect God.

There are doctrinal answers to why we believe we need a Savior to redeem us from the Fall of Adam and to return us to our Father in Heaven that you'll probably come across here. But let me tell you why I need a Savior personally and what He does for me. Christ suffered personally for my pains, sorrows, and sins so that if I ask Him too, He can take them from me. I have been the victim of abuse in my life, and yet through Him I have been able to lay it all at His feet, freely forgive, feel peace, find love, and understand how important negative life experiences can be in teaching us humility. Daily He takes my pain and replaces it with pure love so that I am no longer a victim, but a victor. I need a Savior because He knows me, and through him my flaws become strengths and my pain becomes peace.

Why did your church previously practice plural marriage (polygamy)?

Because the Lord commanded it for a period of time. It wasn't easy for those who practiced it. Many, even Brigham Young (the second prophet after the death of Joseph Smith) had difficulty accepting the revelation. It took a great deal of soul searching and personal submission and communion with God for many of those individuals to reconcile themselves to the practice of plural marriage.

Even in ancient times, when the practice was culturally accepted, plural marriage was difficult. Moses, Abraham, and many others who practiced plural marriage because of God's commandment all experienced personal challenges arising from their family situation. But sometimes life is such: God requires difficult things. The difficulties never seem appealing to us, but if we are faithful, we will find that God had reasons for the challenges He gave us.
