I'm a daughter, sister, and friend. I recently graduated in Linguistics and Editing. I like to read and learn. I studied editing to have the chance to read and learn about all kinds of interesting things. I like sewing and creating things. I sew clothes, purses, and other crafts. I enjoy cooking for other people because it gives me the opportunity to learn and try new recipes.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into this church, but I stay a strong member because I have come to know for myself that God the Father and his son Jesus Christ live. I know they love me and all of their children. I have come closer to my Father in Heaven through prayer and scripture study. I know that when I do my best and read my scriptures everyday, the Lord is pleased and ready to bless me. I know He knows me and knows what challenges I am facing, because when I pray to him for help and guidance, he listens and answers my prayers. I'm a Mormon because I want Heavenly Father to trust me with caring for and loving His children that I meet everyday.

How I live my faith

I care and watch over the women in my community and ward. I serve and teach them by and through the spirit. When a sister in my ward is in need, I do my best to be there for her and to help her stay up when she is bombarded by the slings and arrows of life.

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

I have many homosexual friends, and I have best friends who are gay rights activists. They know my stand on same-sex marriage, and I know theirs, but guess what? We are still friends. I hope you and I can be friends too, as I try to explain a portion of what I feel about the issue of same-sex marriage.

According to principles that I believe were established by God to protect both men and women and provide for their temporal and eternal welfare, only marriage between a man and woman is allowed. This marriage must entail complete fidelity from both parties. Just as post-marital sexual desires and impulses should be controlled, pre-marital ones are equally tameable.

The LDS Church penalizes no one based on their sexual orientation. What someone feels is not equal to what they do. Once someone acts on same-sex attraction, they are committing sin. Merely being attracted is not a sin. It is not easy or simple or enjoyable to suppress one's physical appetites. Frankly, I'm not even sure of all the reasons it is commanded that we do so (though I know of the basic reasons). What I do know (and believe me when I say I do know this) is that God has ordained marriage between man and woman. He always has reasons, and we usually don't understand them for quite some time. But I know with all my heart that it is for the good of all people, regardless of sexual orientation, that marriage only be permited between a man and a woman.

Sometimes if people know I am Mormon, they believe that I will not be friendly and accepting to those who practice a different lifestyle than mine. The truth is MOST of my dear friends do not share my lifestyle. I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke, I don't watch R rated movies.

And, I believe marriage is between a man and a woman.

Does that mean that I don't want to be friends or on a committee with someone who is gay or lesbian? Not any more than I would avoid a person who smokes or drinks or watches R rated movies. While I don't choose to participate in those activities, I have many friends that I cherish dearly, including friends who are gay and lesbian, who view political and religious issues differently than me. I don't "tolerate" them. I adore them. And, thankfully, for me, they don't tolerate me either. We respectfully disagree on various political and religious issues, but there are so many other important things that bring us together as friends and community members. One of my most cherished friends, who identifies as a lesbian, told me the other day, "Michele, before you, I had a stigma about Mormons. You have changed that. I cherish you." Her remark is dear to my heart. It says she knows I love her, but even more, it says something about her that she gave me a chance when others told her not to. I am grateful she was willing to give me a chance because I gained a very special friend - a sister of my heart.

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Yes we do! Heavenly Father is the same yesterday today and forever! Today, God has called a prophet to lead and guide us. His name is Thomas S. Monson. He receives revelation for the issues in our day. We can listen to Him and know what our Heavenly Father wants us to do. I know as you follow God's chosen messengers that we can enjoy happiness, safety, and be led back to Him.
