I am a recent college grad who majored in International Studies. I love traveling, spending time outdoors, playing sports, singing, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I know this gospel is true and I love this church! I was baptized in February 2011 and it has been the best decision of my life. I started meeting with the missionaries because of my roommate in December 2010. I remember them asking me one day if I wanted to get baptized. I got scared. I didn't know if I was strong enough to share with the world that I was a Mormon. But Heavenly Father had other plans for me. A couple of days later, I was reading 2 Nephi 29 and I heard in my head "I NEED to be baptized!" This kept repeating over in my head until I finally picked up the phone and called the missionaries. They were surprised but overjoyed at my declaration. I was baptized on February 4, and even though I knew the gospel was true, I hadn't received revelation on the matter. About a month after my baptism, another convert to the church got up one Sunday and started telling us how wrong our beliefs were. It broke my heart to hear her words, but my testimony also grew because of it. That night, as I was saying my prayers, I asked Heavenly Father to please confirm for me what I already knew to be true. I had barely finished praying when my heart started pounding and the Holy Spirit spoke one powerful word to me- "YES!". Because of that experience, I have never doubted the truthfulness of this gospel. I am now on a mission and am so excited to share my experiences and the joy that this gospel has brought to my life with others. I know it will bless their lives.

How I live my faith

I do my best to live my faith by praying and reading my scriptures daily. I am a greeter and ward missionary in my ward and go to lessons with the missionaries when I can. I enjoy sharing the correct information about this church and my conversion story with people. I am so excited to serve the Lord in the Utah Provo mission and show people how this gospel can transform and bless their lives.

What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

When I was first learning about the church, I struggled a lot with understanding this concept. A testimony is our personal knowledge of how we know that the Book of Mormon is true, or that Joseph Smith was the true Prophet, to name a few. The one testimony that stands out the most to me is my testimony of the Book of Mormon. A couple of months ago, during a Fast and Testimony meeting, a convert bore her testimony of how the Church was false. Everyone was worried that what she was saying would start to make me rethink my decision about becoming Mormon. It didn't. If anything it made it stronger. That night, as I was saying my prayers, I asked Heavenly Father to let me know whether this was the true church or not. I got my answer immediately that this was the true church. A testimony in the church is a spiritual witness given to an individual by the Holy Ghost that something is true. The Holy Ghost is a spirit, who is a member of the Godhead. His primary work is to testify, or be a witness, of Jesus Christ and of all truth. However, the Holy Ghost will rarely speak to us in words. Instead, He "pricks our hearts" (see Acts 2) and gives us a feeling of peace and joy, or a feeling of burning and swelling (the good kind) within our hearts. Why is authority to perform a baptism important?

If baptism is the gateway to Heaven, then the baptizer is a border agent. Would you want any old person who claims to know how it's done to just start letting whoever wants to into your country? Why do you insist they carry a badge and wear a uniform, and have an ID which proves they are legitimate representatives of the government? It's the same way with God's rituals. All over the scriptures, whenever there's a ritual performed it was performed by a duly authorized representative. Doesn't it just make sense that if something essential for our salvation would be required, that it should need to be done God's way, by God's authorized representatives? Acts 19:1-6 even shows a time when the authority of the baptizer was in doubt, and Paul re-did the baptisms for good measure. With all the confusion that comes from competing people claiming to speak for God, or claiming to know His will in this matter or that, I'm glad Mormons teach about authority. There's so much more clarity about who we should listen to, and who might be perfectly well-intentioned, but who really shouldn't be listened to because they're not authorized. Show more Show less
