Charleen: Mormon.

Hi, I'm Charleen

I'm a singer, love the theater am in the Army Reserves and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I joined the LDS faith on February 28th 1993. I was raised in the Lutheran Church, but was looking, much like Joseph Smith, for the true church. One that had the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ within it's doctrine and the actions of it's members. I searched for 12 years for His Church and was at the point where I was beginning to think it did not exist, so I went back to the church I was raised in. The Church I was raised in was not a bad church, by any stretch of the means, but I felt as though something were missing. I had never considered investigating the LDS faith in the past, but something came up to cause a deep curiousity and since I was looking for truth I thought it unfair to ignore my curiousity despite what I had heard from many others. A close friend of mine was LDS so she helped me understand what they believed. I gave all others an equal and fair chance as I asked questions of not only the Mormons, but members of other faiths as well. I had a Spiritual experience one day while I was studying that I could not deny. That is why I joined. It has not been an easy road. My faith has been challenged on many occassions and I discovered that, as in all other churches, the LDS have members too who do not always do what is right. The doctrine is here for all to see, however, and to grow by if we can set aside our prideful, arrogant natures and humble ourselves as a child. He truly will be the source of all truth for us as we do so.

Why I am a Mormon

It took me a while to undersand the importance of revelation as the LDS taught, but the Spiritual experience I had while investigating the LDS faith, was what we call revelation. Revelation is when God speaks to us and tells us things that are true and we can feel His presence. Revelation allows us to know how to interprete the truths in the scriptures and our experiences will teach us too as we seek answers to our questions about life here and life everlasting. Revelation will give us peace in knowing that Jesus Christ is our Savior, that He did die for us all on the cross, and that He is who He says He is and has all power and authority in Heaven and on earth. A scripture from John talks about some who no longer walked with Him. Jesus turned to Simon and asked him if he would leave too. Simon replied that he knew and was sure that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God, if he left, where could he go. He knew. Just like Simon knew, so do I, through the same means because flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto me, but my Father which is in Heaven. Where can we go, when we know and are sure. There is no where else I want to be than standing on a sure foundation of truth.

Personal Stories

What is hope and what do you hope for?

Hope, for me is that all that I believe in will be true. Hope is to believe that there is someone greater out there who really does know all things and can help us and who loves us. Hope is for a better life to come. I hope to see my daughter again and my parents. I went to a military training event not long ago and heard the unmistakable voice of a friend that I knew while I was in Kuwait. I was so excited to see her since it had been 4 years or so and to catch up on how she was doing. I hope Heaven is like that, where all we have lost will be with us again. It will be restored to us...even all of our hopes and dreams.

Why/How do you share the gospel with your friends?

I share the gospel because I know that it's true. I know it will help us in this life to become who we were meant to be. It will build our confidence in ourselves and in the Lord. I share in a variety of ways. In Kuwait I felt inspired to put Books of Mormon on the shelves in various languages. We often find ourselves thinking and working towards those things we love the most. Knowing how true the gospel is causes me to want to share it with others. If something works for you it will work for others too and if something works so well and is so exciting, who wouldn't want to share it with friends and family.

Can you think of a specific challenge in your family that Gospel Principles helped overcome?

Yes, the challenge to run when the going gets tough. Some of my greatest challenges have been with some of the members of my own church family. I had to learn that just because the church is true, does not mean that all of it's members will be. The teachings are here for me to learn by. Not given to me so I can tell others how to live, but so I can implement the teachings for how I should live. Another challenge would be the loss of our daughter, Allison. Sometimes we tend to feel that when we are trying all we can that things should be coming up roses. Each experience molds us and will either change us for the better or worse, depending upon how we use the experience.

How I live my faith

No matter what church we are members of, the church is filled with imperfect people. My imperfections aside, I hope to serve and make a differance along my journey here on earth. I have never turned down a responsibility that I have been asked to fullfill in the church. Because of many of the mis-conceptions about Latter Day Saints, I also take time to answer questions that others ask or doubts they may have to set the record straight. Fidei Defensor, Latin for Defendor of the faith I pay a full tithe to my church knowing that all that I give goes to where it is needed the most. I have truly "experimented upon the word" by trying to follow a living Prophet as well as what the Lord tells me personally through revelation. I try, as best as I can, to be an "example of the believers". I am a singer, so I use my voice to sing unto the Lord and to motivate and inspire others. I am also in the military, so wherever I have gone in my military service, I have tried to help move and inspire there as well. While in Kuwait I prepared church bulletins, led the music, taught lessons, and even did some missionary work. I have 9 children of which one has served a faithful mission to the Philippines. We lost a daughter, which was difficult, but there are some things we can do nothing about in this life. I hope that some were inspired during her funeral services because of the type of person she was to so many. We give educational scholarships in her name. I live confidently, the life I believe my Savior would be pleased with, imperfections aside. I have gathered my family in family home evenings and encourage them in their successes. Many of my children are not actively serving in the church, but no matter where they are at in life I love them and continually hope for their spiritual sucesses as well as the more worldly ones. I know them well and have confidence that the Lord will work with them as He has worked with me.
