Mike: Mormon.

Hi, I'm Mike

I'm a husband, father, optimist, fly-fisherman, learner, public servant and I am a Mormon.

About Me

I am a father of two amazing children and husband to the love of my life. I grew up the son of an army officer, living in multiple states and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ukraine for two years. I studied Journalism and Public Administration in college. I love working in local government and serving the community I live in. Some of my favorite hobbies include fly-fishing, skiing, hiking and reading, but most of all I spend the majority of my free time with my family.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer, whose life I strive to emulate and whose teachings I seek to live every day of my life. I was born to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. My mother was raised Mormon and my father converted when he was 17 years old. In my teenage years I truly sought to know for myself if the teachings of the Church were true. As I studied the Book of Mormon and the Bible, I prayed to know of their truthfulness. I came to know for myself that they contained the words of God, words that motivate me to do good, help guide me in times of need and comfort me in times of sorrow. I came to know of God's love for me and all His children and of His plan for us. This motivation and knowledge of the purpose of life continues to bring me true happiness that I wish for all to enjoy.

Personal Stories

In what ways have your prayers been answered?

It is through prayer that I gained a knowledge that the Book of Mormon is truly another testament of Jesus Christ. Through prayer, I received the confirmation that I should take a break from college and serve a mission for my Church for two years. By prayer, I knew that I should marry my wife. After much yearning, grief of loss and faith that we would have children, it is after much prayer that we were blessed with amazing children.
Not only has prayer helped me in making big decisions in my life, but I remember once losing something of no significant monetary value, but something that meant a lot to me because of who gave it to me. After much frustration looking everywhere I could think to search, I realized I should pray for help. Once having knelt in prayer and asked God to help bring to remembrance where I should search, my mind was filled with the memory of when I last used this item, and so I looked and I found. Once again, I knew that God is mindful of each of us in a very personal way. I know He hears and answers our prayers. It is simply up to us to pray in faith and listen.

How I live my faith

Each day begins and ends with personal prayer. I pray as well with my family morning and night, prior to meals or in other times of gratitude or need. Prayers in my heart continue throughout the day. Scripture study is a huge part of my life. I find that I am better prepared for the challenges of life on days that I make time to adequately study the words of God similar to being in shape because of regular exercise and proper nutrition.
Teaching my kids is probably the biggest part of living my faith because I want to try my best to provide an example to them of what it is we try and teach them. As a family we designate Monday night as a family night taking turns teaching one another a lesson about Jesus Christ and His teachings, followed by an activity and a much anticipated treat. We also attend our church services weekly and study the scriptures together daily.
Being a Mormon also brings with it the opportunity to serve the members of the congregation you worship with. Because we have no paid clergy, each member of the church may receive multiple responsibilities, such as being assigned various families to serve and care for, and assisting in running church services. I have the privilege of serving the youth ages 12-18. I help arrange scouting, service and enjoyable activities for the youth on Wednesday nights and many weekends throughout the year. In addition to such activities I teach them gospel based lessons on Sundays.
Living my faith extends into every facet of my life, including my career that is in public service. Being honest and fair with those I work with and making decisions with ethical guidelines stems from my faith in Christ.
