About Me

I'm a mom to five, two of whom have flown the coop. I work part time in the local school district before-school care program. I'm reading a book on Modern Dental Assisting, but I really love to read sci-fi. My husband and I hope to travel to England and the Florida Keys someday. I love living in Minnesota.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up a Mormon, but that's not why I continue to be a Mormon. I made a choice in my early twenties. I chose to believe. My faith brings happiness to my life. I prefer to live a life with the belief and the faith that Jesus Christ's promises are true because He brings hope, joy, and peace to my life. I am a Mormon because I believe my Heavenly Father knows me and loves me. Reading scriptures brings that love alive in my heart. Hearing God's prophets speak gives me courage to be happy in the face of trials and discouragement. I believe God answers prayers and sends me personal revelation that helps me find my way. Plus, I can always find a friend at church!

How I live my faith

I teach a scripture study class for high school students every morning at 6 a.m. It takes commitment and sacrifice, but I have been blessed beyond that which I have sacrificed. I play songs from our hymnbook on my piano when I need to relax. The peaceful music eases stress. I make a conscious effort every day to find something God-given, something good, to be thankful for.

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

I have many homosexual friends, and I have best friends who are gay rights activists. They know my stand on same-sex marriage, and I know theirs, but guess what? We are still friends. I hope you and I can be friends too, as I try to explain a portion of what I feel about the issue of same-sex marriage.

According to principles that I believe were established by God to protect both men and women and provide for their temporal and eternal welfare, only marriage between a man and woman is allowed. This marriage must entail complete fidelity from both parties. Just as post-marital sexual desires and impulses should be controlled, pre-marital ones are equally tameable.

The LDS Church penalizes no one based on their sexual orientation. What someone feels is not equal to what they do. Once someone acts on same-sex attraction, they are committing sin. Merely being attracted is not a sin. It is not easy or simple or enjoyable to suppress one's physical appetites. Frankly, I'm not even sure of all the reasons it is commanded that we do so (though I know of the basic reasons). What I do know (and believe me when I say I do know this) is that God has ordained marriage between man and woman. He always has reasons, and we usually don't understand them for quite some time. But I know with all my heart that it is for the good of all people, regardless of sexual orientation, that marriage only be permited between a man and a woman.

This issue is one that is rife with misunderstanding to outsiders. First, let me say here that we love and accept all of God's children, regardless of beliefs. That being said, we affirm that the central purpose of life is to make and keep covenants in a family relationship. By extension that means bringing children into the world, born in loving families with both a father and a mother.

We believe that our genders are an essential aspect of our eternal identities, that we were male and female even before we came to this earth. Neither sex is more important than the other; both serve the purpose of God to save His children. Both priesthood and motherhood are essential in the rearing of children.

I myself am unspeakably grateful for the blessing of having both a loving father and mother. They each supported me in different ways, unique to their identity as a man and a woman.

How can faith in Jesus Christ influence us in our marriages and family relationships? in our friendships?

Jesus of Nazareth was, and still is, the great healer. It is our faith in Him which enables Him to perform miracles in our lives. Often that miracle is a change of heart which allows us to forgive, see others in a new light, or feel an increased measure of love. Having faith in Jesus as our divine redeemer enables Him to bless our marriage and family relationships with an increased measure of unity and love.
