Hi, I'm Heidi
I'm a mom, a young widow, and I'm a Mormon.
About Me
I was raised in Arizona and Oregon. I served a mission in New Hampshire and attended universities in Idaho, Utah, and Montana. I have a BS and an MA in History and particularly enjoy studying antebellum America.
I was single for much longer than I ever expected. I was 39 when I married my best friend. Ten months later we were the parents of a beautiful daughter. Six weeks after that, we learned my husband had stage 4 cancer. He passed away just 2 1/2 years later.
I am a widow, but I'm not single. Our marriage took place in the Logan, UT Temple. We believe this means it is a marriage that continues after death.
I have been the recipient of many of the Lord's tender mercies. I truly believe that if we have eyes to see them, we will recognize His gifts and blessings are everywhere.
I enjoy homemaking, being a mother, reading, and blogging. For now, I get to stay at home but when my daughter starts elementary school, I'll be headed back to work in order to support our family. Following the prophet's advice to get an education and to get/stay out of debt have been incredible blessings during my current circumstance.
Life is hard but living the gospel makes it so much less so. I love the saying, "life is hard ... the gospel is easy."
Why I am a Mormon
My parents and grandparents and even, great, great, great grandparents have all been LDS. There came a time in my youth though that I realized I needed to decide for myself. I remember weighing the decision to ask carefully. I thought, "if I ask and it IS true, then I'll have to live it with exactness, no excuses." Finally I did ask and realized that what I'd been taught and living was the plan of happiness. Now I try to teach my own daughter how joyful and liberating the gospel is.
Personal Stories
How has your knowledge of the Plan of Happiness changed/benefited your life?
I always planned on being a wife and mother. I have nine siblings and loved being part of such a big family. I served a mission when I was 21 and then completed my BS and MA in History. Through all of that I wondered but usually didn't worry when I would marry. I never thought I'd actually have a career, but I was so thankful for my education and had a great career at a university for ten years.
When I was 39 I married my best friend. We moved to Alabama where he was a professor of Art. We were able to return often to the West because he was part of a popular men's a cappella group, Voice Male. We were thrilled to get pregnant quite quickly and just ten months after our wedding, our daughter was born. For years I wondered if these blessings would be mine in this life and here I was with a talented, adoring husband and a remarkable, precious daughter.
When she was just six weeks old we received news that shook our faith. My husband had stage 4 cancer. He was remarkable and was blessed to work and serve throughout two and a half years of cancer treatments including surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy. He served in our branch, continued to work full time, and continued to return to Utah for Voice Male concerts. His stamina was truly a tender mercy.
When our daughter was just 2 1/2 and we'd only been married for 3 1/2 years, he passed away. I am so thankful for the power of the priesthood and for eternal marriage. It has been my experience that when I am willing to ask for and receive peace, it always comes. The Gift of the Holy Ghost is real.
I look forward to the day that we will be reunited as an eternal family. In the meantime, my daughter and I laugh a lot, cry a little, and continue to live "in the manner of happiness". It is knowledge of and faith in the Plan of Happiness that makes this possible.
How I live my faith
I have had so many opportunities to learn and grow through assignments in the church. I love teaching and this is truly a teaching church. I have three great women whom I visit each month as a visiting teacher. I also get to teach music to the children ages 3-8. This is such a fun assignment. When children sing the songs about the gospel, and especially about Christ, it is hard not to grow in faith.
In the past, I've worked frequently with the young women ages 12-18. I'm so impressed with their testimonies and desires for good. Youth face difficult times and pressures. I'm always so humbled to see them doing good.
I loved my experience as a full time missionary. It was hard, to be sure, but it was such a defining time of my life.
I love that the church allows all to serve and to grow from that service. It is one of the most remarkable things to me that each of us is chosen to be part of the growth of others. It is truly humbling to be allowed to participate in this great work.
