Hi, I'm Mary-Theresa
I'm a Mormon. I was brought up Catholic, but converted in 1978.
About Me
I am a caregiver/partner to my husband of nearly 41 years.
I am an avid genealogist and am deeply involved in documenting my husband's Quaker roots. I am also heavily involved in Family Search Indexing. I also love to read historical fiction.
I have been taught that all people have value - no matter what race or creed - by my parents example. My parents are immigrants - my mother was born in Portugal and my father's parents came here after WWI from Italy.
Why I am a Mormon
The Gospel of Jesus Christ filled a large vacuum in my life. I was automatically dropped from membership in the Catholic Church when marrying my husband, who was previously married and divorced.
When introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through the missionary discussions, it was like I was putting on a glove that fit so completely and comfortably, that I knew I was finally where I belonged.
I wish I could still sing, but a medical condition prevents it, but the hymns of Zion can still bring tears to my eyes as I ponder their messages.
Personal Stories
How has the Book of Mormon brought you closer to God?
The Book of Mormon has opened the rest of the scriptures to me. It is the perfect companion as I read the Bible - as it explains so much. I love that it is written in clear language.
Why do Mormons do family history or genealogy work?
We believe that we have a responsibility to our ancestors to provide them the opportunities they have missed when they lived upon the earth. I know that Jesus Christ set up a missionary system after His Death that provides our ancestors the choice to listen and accept the gospel.
I also feel it is very important that I document and research all my ancestors as carefully as possible so that I don't miss anyone. My family here is small and I hope to meet all my ancestors some day.
How I live my faith
I try to read the scriptures daily and don't feel right unless I am able to attend Church every Sunday.
I love teaching the Gospel in a class and sharing my talents with others so they can learn how to do Family History genealogy or Indexing.
Right now, I am happy serving as the Librarian in our ward - helping others have the tools needed to share the gospel with their classes is important to me.
Home and Visiting Teaching is a way to keep connected with others in my area and share my testimony and understanding of the Gospel on a regular basis; it also is an important way to show they are cared for as individuals.
