About Me

I am in a single Mother. We divorced when our youngest was a newborn baby. I have 3 young sons and I share custody of them with their Father and loving step-mother. I work part-time at an elementary school. I just returned back to college, hoping to get some sort of degree someday.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born in the church. I was blessed to have a mom and dad who were both attending church and who were happily married. They raised me right and taught me values and strict morals. We had fun and we worked hard as children. I didn't go to church much as a teenager. I always believed in the church, but when I was 17, my priorities were all over the place. Peer pressure really affected me as a teenager and I didn't always make the best choices. I got married young and started a family. When I gave birth to my first son, my priorities changed again. Church became very important to me. I wanted my son raised to know Heavenly Father and Christ. I wanted him raised with values and morals. I needed Heavenly Father's help to be a good mother. When my divorce started I became even more close to Heavenly Father. I had 2 choices when my husband moved out. I could be angry and embarrased and walk away from church, or I could be humble and grateful and use Heavenly Father and my Church family's love to get through a hard time. For 3 years I have been alone with my children. It isn't easy. Prayer has always gotten me through trials. I believe all of the Church's teachings. I can feel it in my heart and it all makes sense to me. Prayer has shown me that God is real. I have prayed for miracles and I have gotten my miracles.

How I live my faith

I wake up on Sunday morning and start dressing my little boys for Church. We dress up in our Sunday best. Not casual attire. My 7 year old enjoys wearing a tie to Church. We pack a bag of snacks and quiet toys to help the little ones through sacrament meeting. My 7 year old son and I each grab our scriptures and we head to church. The children go to primary classes to have simple lessons and sing songs. Children also give prayers and short talks. I feel great pride when I get to go visit primary and hear one of my children pray. I go to my meetings, first a meeting with just women. Sometimes I get to teach at this meeting. This is my favorite meeting. Next is Sunday School where we study the scriptures. Then I gather from children from primary and we all go to sacrament meeting to partake of the bread and water and hear members of our congregration teach us. I try to read a scripture story to my kids each night and say night time prayers. We pray for our meals. During the week we try our hardest to keep the commandments and to stay close to Heavenly Father.

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

The Word of Wisdom is a commandment relating to the health of our bodies. To me, the most important aspect of the Word of Wisdom is that we should abstain from tobacco, alcohol, coffee & tea, and illegal drugs. I followed this commandment during my teenage years and found it to be a huge blessing. I wasn't even tempted to use those substances because I had been taught the Word of Wisdom my whole life. I believe that avoiding these substances isn't only good for your physical health, but also emotional health. These all addictive substances. It is important to have a clear mind and be free of addictions in order to have healthy emotional and spiritual feelings.

The word of wisdom is the Lord's law of health. We abstain from drugs, tobacco, alcohol, coffee, and tea, and are encouraged to eat wholesome food and grains, and not eat excessive meat. I am asked all of the time by my fellow residents at the hospital why I don't drink coffee, and how I can stay awake all night on call without it. I don't consider it a sacrifice, though, and am as awake and perform as well as any. It is true that the body will be more healthy when following the word of wisdom, the but the main benefit is spiritual. The knowledge that you are in line with the the Lord's teaching is the most important thing.

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

My father is gay and I have many friends who are gay. Though we have some differing opinions and beliefs, we have a great relationship - each respecting the other's right to choose their own way. Its no secret that the Church does not support gay marriage. We believe that God's plan for the family is, always has been and always will be a man and a woman and their children. However, the perception that the church is anti-gay is inaccurate. We support the rights of all men and woman to exercise their free agency and be entitled to the same legal rights as anyone, as long as they don't erode the principles on which our country was founded - freedom of religion. The scriptures affirm that homosexual behaviors are a sin, but I believe Christ understands the extreme difficulty that a gay person would experience refusing to act upon their same-sex attraction. I also believe that through Him, all things are possible and that no person is unworthy or undeserving of His love and the benefits of His atonement.
