John!: Mormon.

Hi, I'm John!

...and I'm a Mormon!

About Me

Hello Everyone, My name is Johnny Hanna. I am a father of three boys (ages 3, 2, and 1) and am on my way to having my own basketball team - two more boys and I am set! I love these little guys and I love my wife.

Obviously, I enjoy playing and watching hoops. I also love to travel. My wife and I try to pick a new destination to visit every couple of years.

I also love technology (just like Kip in Napolean Dynamite). :) I work at a software company I helped start 8 years ago with two of my closest friends. The last two years have been great! We have made the Inc 500 for fastest growing companies in America two years in a row!

Why I am a Mormon

I was blessed not only to have a father who helped me to gain a testimony of my Savior, but I was also blessed to have a mother who taught me by her example to be a good person as she raised me as a Catholic where I learned about the teachings of Jesus in the Bible.

I grew up in Colorado and then moved to Montana with my family. Soon after we arrived, Mormon Missionaries knocked on our door and my father joined the church. A few months later, my mother and father separated. I ended up moving back to Colorado with my mother and older sister.

Every Summer my sister and I would visit my dad in Montana where he taught us about the Book of Mormon and how Jesus Christ, after he resurrected in Jerusalem, came and appeared to the ancient inhabitants of America. I ended up reading the Book of Mormon and came to receive a testimony of its truthfulness through the witness of the Holy Ghost. I knew that God had prophets to teach his children here in the Americas a long time ago just like he did on the other side of the world in Jerusalem as we read in the Bible.

The Book of Mormon helped me to learn that God always has had prophets to teach us His word and that He has also called prophets to guide us today. I know that God lives! He still performs miracles! I know that he sent His son, Jesus Christ to come to Earth to Atone for my sins and for all mankind. He is our Savior. I know that he guides His church still. Revelation continues through His chosen servants who guide the Church of Jesus Christ in our day! I know that this is true.

Personal Stories

Why do Mormons go on missions?

As Mormons, we believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to be spread throughout the world.

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, young men are asked to serve a mission when they turn 19. Young women also have the option to serve a mission at the age of 21. Each young man or woman is asked to be living worthy and they are asked to save up their own money to pay their way. After being found worthy to serve you are then given an assignment of where you will be for the next two years. You don't get to choose!

As I explained earlier, I had come to a knowledge of my Savior and found His teachings in the Bible and Book of Mormon to be life changing. I also knew that others weren't as blessed to have parents like me who taught them of Christ. I had learned that where much is given, much is required and I knew I wanted to serve a mission.

I had worked hard to save money by working construction with my dad and was hoping to be called to some place cool or exotic like Fiji, Italy, or South Africa when I turned 19. Instead, I was called to serve in Houston, TX! I had never been there but all I knew about Houston was that the Houston Rockets had just signed Charles Barkley to their roster and I loved Chuck! :)

I had failed my Spanish classes in High School so just showing up and knocking on the doors of Central Americans wasn't the easiest thing to do. I felt that I was called to Houston for a reason so I was persistent and ended up learning spanish in a couple of months. I met the most wonderful people and fell in love with latinos and their culture. I also learned that Taco Bell was NOT real Mexican food. :)

I thought that I would go out and bring people to Christ but found out quickly that I was not only helping others but I was growing closer to my Savior and getting to know him better myself. My mission changed my life and I am grateful that I was sent to Houston to learn and grow.

How I live my faith

The scriptures give us a blue print on how we are to live our Faith. The Book of Mormon, continuing revelation, and the Holy Bible have helped to shape me into who I am today as they teach us about our perfect example, Jesus Christ. Growing up, I chose to place myself in holy places and I chose my friends wisely. Because of that, I ended up meeting the most wonderful companion a man could ever have and married her.

My wife and I have the same beliefs and we often talk about how we can be more like our Savior. We pray often and work hard to keep the Sabbath Day holy. We care so much for our little boys and are working hard to help them to be men of God. Each Sunday my wife and I teach the 16-18 year olds in our church and this has been a great blessing to study together and to have gospel centered discussions as we prepare each week to teach.

We try to keep a focus in our lives on what really matters. We try to avoid getting wrapped up in the drama of what is presented to us through TV and other media. We pay attention to the blessings we receive and we try to give back to others in need. We have our struggles like anyone else but the gospel has been there to help guide us and to give us comfort.
