I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am 22 years old, serving as a missionary in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I teach people who speak Spanish about the Gospel and help them strengthen their faith in Christ. I love being a missionary!! Before my mission I went to college and studied Special Education. I plan on continuing that after my mission. I love spending time with my family and friends, reading good books, and eating chocolate!

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I love my Savior Jesus Christ, and I know that this is His true church on the earth. I was raised in the church, and have seen it bless my family for my whole life. I have prayed and studied to know that Joseph Smith is a true prophet, and the Book of Mormon is true, and I know that they are true. The Gospel has blessed my life so much! I know that Heavenly Father knows me personally, and that He is aware of me and the challenges and concerns I face. I love praying to Him, and I know He hears me. I know that Jesus Christ suffered for my sins, so that I can repent and return to live with Him and my family again. I am so thankful for all He has done for me!

How has The Book of Mormon helped you understand the purpose of life?

When I read the Book of Mormon I feel the love of Jesus Christ. In the Book of Mormon lots of prophets teach about Jesus Christ and the sacrifice that He made for us and how we can return to live with Him again. My faith in Christ is strengthened as I learn more about Him. I know that as we follow the teachings we find in the scriptures, we have peace and happiness in our lives.

How does making right choices help us make more right choices?

How I live my faith

I try to keep the commandments the best I can. I try to be a good person and help others. I make a lot of mistakes, but I do my best to repent of them. I try to live the way Jesus would live. While I was in High School I was a volunteer at activities that the church provided for people with disabilities. We helped them learn about Jesus and participate in fun activities. I loved it!! I feel like this helped me appreciate people who are different, and experience some of the love that Heavenly Father feels for each of His children. I know that as we help others we become better people and find so much joy.

What is the priesthood?

I like to approach questions by looking at the words of things

"priest" has reference to either the concept of one who leads, one who is elder, or one who is holy I like to remember that the words 'holy' and 'whole' are linked by a common ancestry. When something is 'holy' it's essentially saying that it's complete, that it's healthy..

And "-hood" makes reference to the state of being, and not just any state of being but a state of being that's worthy or correct for it's placement. That is, that it's done properly.

So one could say the priesthood is leadership or a point of reference that's completely suited to the position in which it's been placed.

Another way to look at it is to say it's God's perfect order. That is, it's God's perfect arrangement.

In our Church we often give a definition of priesthood as being "the authority to act in God's name" and that's exactly what it means to be a part of God's perfect order. If God commands something to be done by you, and you do it, then you are acting under, and with that portion of God's authority that he's permitted you to exercise within his perfect order.

Just as with any instance where someone tries to act in the name of someone else there are bound to be those who try and do so falsely. That's why God has things ordered in such a way that one can know for certain if someone has His God's authority, or not.

Why did your church previously practice plural marriage (polygamy)?

The short answer is that, for a time, God commanded it. It was a challenge for those families commanded to practice it, but they accepted the challenge with faith.

There have been many times throughout history that God has asked His people to do difficult things or things that go against the norms of society. For example, God has commanded plural marriage in the Bible. He commanded Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, stopping it at the last minute. He commanded the ancient Israelites to destroy all inhabitants of many of the settlements in the land of Canaan when they returned to the promised land.

The knowledge of these things challenges our faith but we must recognize that God's ways are not our ways and He controls all life.

If plural marriage is something that keeps you from the church or keeps you from investigating further, I invite you to consider this: it really comes down to one thing. Was Joseph Smith a true prophet or not? If he was, then the commandment came from God and He restored His church through Joseph. Answer that question and the rest falls into place. I am happy that I did.
