Dave: prosecutor, fly fisherman, outdoors, wilderness, family, gardening, Mormon.

Hi, I'm Dave

I'm a Mormon. I live Utah. I am a descendant of the Mormon Pioneers. I am an attorney.

About Me

I have 7 children. I love to get together with my family. We enjoy spending time in the wilderness. My boy's and I fly fish. All of us enjoy hiking and taking in the beauty of nature. I love to grow fruit and vegetables in my garden; I like the connection with the Earth. My wife takes care of the flowers. I am a public prosecutor. I take the challenge very seriously to make sure the evidence is clear and the punishment fits the crime for each conviction. After two decades it still breaks my heart to see people struggling through life making poor choices. I always lament the happiness folks miss as they carreen through life with no direction. My desire to see justice for victims of crime is my motivation. I have a very close relationship with my wife. She is my best friend in the world. No matter what challenges come our way, I know we will face them together. The hope and faith we share in our Savior Jesus Christ gives us a strong foundation to weather the storms that come our way. I love getting to know new people. There is so much that is good and interesting to discover in the world.

Why I am a Mormon

Although I am a descendant of Mormon Pioneers, everyone has to obtain a personal witness of the reality of God, His son Jesus Christ and that His true church has been restored to the Earth in our day. I made it my quest to learn the truth of these things for myself as a young man. My fatih and convictions have grown stronger as I have gotten older. I love the hope, peace and strength the gospel of Jesus Christ brings to my life. Knowing that God has a plan me and for all of his children helps me to see clearly in a world that can seem chaotic and confusing. I have a certain knowledge that God lives and loves each and every one of us. I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. Reading it brings me closer to the Savior than you can ever imagine unless you read the book yourself. God has always spoken to His children on Earth through prophets. I believe He continues to call and speak to prophets in our day too. The modern prophets deliver to us God's word for our time. Their counsel and advice is a great treasure to me. I strive to follow their prophetic teachings and doing so brings me great peace and happiness.

Personal Stories

What have you done successfully to shield your family from unwanted influences?

I am very concerned for my family due to the direction the world is heading. We do a number of things to keep ourselves unspotted from the world. We pray together as a family in the morning, at dinner time and before we go to bed. This is a time to recognize our blessings and express our love and concern for each other. We have dinner together every night where we make it a point to find out what has happened in our children's lives during the day. We read scriptures as a family each morning for a few minutes. It reminds us of our connnection to God and what He expects of us. We hold a "Family Home Evening" each Monday night at which time we teach our children our religious and moral values. We do not allow in our home media, music, video games, computer, television, etc. that glorify destructive life choices such as violence, sexual promiscuity, infidelity in marriage, etc. We limit the time our children spend each day on the computer, on the phone or playing video games and encouarge them to read, to recreate outdoors, etc. Our computer is password protected and we keep it in a high traffic area where others can see what is being accessed. We do not allow our children to spend time in the homes of friends unless parents, who we know and trust, are at home. We do not have sleepovers at our home or allow our children to have sleepovers with friends. We do not allow our children to date until they are 16 and then we encourage group dating. We discourage steady relationships until our children are in college. It may seem crazy but we make our children date at least two other individuals before we let them date someone they have dated before. We play together, vacation together and make it a point to know our children, their friends, their interests, their goals and what is happening in their lives. We teach them our expectations for them, such as living a moral family-centered life, giving to their community, getting an education, etc.

Why do Mormons go on missions?

Members of our faith serve missions because of a desire to be disciples of Jesus Christ in the true sense. We believe we have a personal reponsibility to preach the gospel and build God's kingdom on Earth. To us, the peace, certainty and joy the gospel brings is the greatest gift in our lives and we see sharing it with the world as an act of love and service. As a young man, I took two years away from my college education to take the gospel to the people of Brazil at the expense of myself and my family. I was fortunate to see the gospel make a dramatic change for the better in the lives of many who I had the privilege to teach. I am currently supporting two of my children who have taken time away from their college to serve missions to the people of Argentina.

How has The Book of Mormon helped you understand the purpose of life?

The Book of Mormon is the anchor for my life. Its teachings bring me so close to the Savior Jesus Christ. It is full of valuable teachings that help me to know and appreciate the Savior more. I love the Old Testament. I love the New Testament. In a day when many reject the Bible as being divinely inspired, the Book of Mormon stands as another witness of Jesus Christ. I know of a certainty that anyone who truly seeks to know God and to find God's true path may obtain that knowledge and find that path by reading the Book of Mormon. I first read the Book of Mormon as a young man and have never really stopped reading it since. The clarity it brings to me about my purpose on Earth, the values for which I should strive and my relationship to Jesus Christ and God the Father are priceless. It tells for certain that God has not changed, nor has his love and concern for man diminshed. He has not gone away and left us alone in a chaotic world of shifting values. When I sought to know the truth of the Book God manifest to me that it is true as he will to you if you honestly and sincerely seek that witness for yourself. My knowledge of the truth of the Book of Mormon confirms that Joseph Smith was a true prophet and that God speaks to man through living prophets today just as he did anciently.

How I live my faith

My family and I attend church together every Sunday. We do not have paid clergy so everyone takes part in teaching and providing leadership. Serving each other in this way helps us understand Jesus Christ better and grow stronger in our love for each other. My assignment is to teach the gospel to the middle age and older men of my church. I also teach members of our church that are preparing to go to the temple. The temple plays a very sacred and vital role in our faith and before members of our faith may enter the temple, they must make an earnest effort to keep God's commandments and earnestly strive to follow the example of Jesus Christ. I also have families that I am assigned to vist monthly to make sure that all is well with them. We look after each other this way. Each week on Monday, my family and I gather together for "Family Home Evening." We teach the gospel in the home, sign songs, role play, have treats, play games. It is a time that takes priority in our family. We do not schedule outside events on Monday evening so we can spend time together. In the morning before I go to work and the kids go to school we read from the scriptures and have a family prayer. We eat dinner as a family almost every night and give thanks for our blessings. We pray as a family before we go to bed each night. The first Sunday of each month we fast by not partaking of food or water for 24 hours. We find that this increases our spiritual feelings. The money that we save from not eating we donate to the church to assist with the less fortunate. Perhaps this may seem like a lot, but our traditions bring us so much happiness. It is difficult to describe the hope, faith and peace the true gospel of Jesus Christ brings.
